Winter Chronicles PV Aurelia Bezuidenhout

Emma couldn't believe it. The journal of Raphael Bezuidenhout stood in her arms as she strolled down to the lake; she couldn't possibly wait to open it up and read it... or at least write the containments down and translate them into English, or better, Spanish. The journal was entirely sketched in German, or was it Dutch? She couldn't exactly remember the correct language, nor did she bother at the moment. The only thing on her mind; the parchment and the quill in the pocket of her blue-outlined garments.

Crunching the loud, crystal-colored snowfall beneath her feet absentmindedly, she ran a finger against the old leather. The chronicle belonged to her relative, but something seemed wrong. The journal belonged to Aurelia, not Raphael himself, yet it felt disobedient to steal it. A long time ago, the gigantic diary belonged to Raphael, what on earth would he say if he saw her with it? Though traces of apprehension fluttered across her mind, she continued to wear the radiant simper on her face. After all, it was finally winter, that meant loads of snowball fights were approaching the students quickly, whether they wanted it or not. She couldn't wait to hit her friends with snowballs, and possibly her enemies with a dense chunk of ice. Three months of winter remained, but days of snow remained.

Just moments ago, she'd found the diary in her Defense Against the Dark Arts class, unguarded and closed. She did the only rational thing, she took it for herself. It wasn't like she was going to leave it for the professor, nor was she keen on the idea of the professors holding on to information she 'needed'. That is, needed to torment Aurelia. Who knows, maybe all the relentless teasing could stop her incessant abuse of the forgetfulness potion. Just maybe.

Stopping, with thawing snow in her brown hair, she hesitated to look at the journal, letting the snow accumulate in her messy hair. What benefits did a diary bring, more or less, what secrets did the Dutch brother have to hide from his family?  Like always, she was prying for information. The young Ravenclaw's mind was always steering across dangerous waters.

She opened up the writing and her eyes began to skim the text, searching for any words that seemed familiar. Words like adopted and, of course, Aurelia stood out to her. Reading the book would have been much enjoyable if the words were in English, or even the transfiguration alphabet for all she cared. Flipping pages by the second, she grinned slightly as her body trembled in the unbearable cold. It was freezing, but it was going to be worth it. Her winter robes were not making the snow any better. Didn't the headmaster use some kind of magic to force the wintery air out of Hogwarts? He surely cared about the Muggles discovering Hogwarts, why did the temperature outside seem any different?

The words on the pages seemed to blur as she feverishly investigated the pages with the momentum of a computer. As long as Raphael didn't come back to life, and Aurelia had the guts to linger inside of Hogwarts, she was going to be fine. For now, she pulled out her quill and began to make small notes in the journal. Scrawling notes inside of the diary like 'Aurelia's adopted' and 'Raphael's true blood', she brushed the end of the quill against her face, the white feather tickling the center of her cheek. Annotating an article had never been more fun, well, it had never actually been fun in the first place.

For the second time in January, Aurelia was heading out to the grounds. It had snowed both the day before and in the night as well. The dorms were terribly cold and the sheets were too thin that Aurelia had to result in wearing four layers of clothes before going to bed. Once again, little flakes or cold particles floated down from the cloudy sky. Aurelia wanted nothing more than to head back to the castle where it was a few degrees warmer. However, as much as she wanted to, she had something to do.

The Gryffindor had had a small panic attack when she realized her brother’s diary was not in her bag. Aurelia always took the heavy book every where she went, if it wasn’t in her bag, Aurelia wouldn’t let it out of her sight. How could she had been so careless to lose it?

The day before, the girl had spent her time under a tree celebrating the birthday of her dead brother. He was supposed to be 16, but 10 he remained. There she was, making her way back to the old tree. She needed to find it badly, it was all she had left of him, all his thoughts, his entire youth was in the pages of the old book. Still, the week was still filled with grief, with every day that passed, smiling took more effort than it usually did. Perhaps it was also because of the hideous braces she had gotten during the winter holidays that made her so self-conscious lately.

Her shoes sank deep into the thick snow with every step, leaving an obvious trail. Her eyebrows furrowed as she circled around the tree with nothing but white snow that settled on its branches. Nothing, not even the dusty brown leather covered book that she desperately hoped to find. The girl leaned against the rough bark, slowly sliding down into the cold snow. She had search every where and still it remained lost. The girl hugged her knees tightly again her chest for warmth, warmth that still couldn’t overcome the anxiety that settled deep in her stomach at that moment. How was she to survive 6 months more in the school without Raphael with her?

As the dandruff-like snowfall continued to accumulate in her frizzy brown hair, she clapped a jittery, pale hand on top of the book to prevent its pages from tarnishing. It was one thing to take a gadget from a student, but to slaughter it in the process? It was just something she could never let herself get away with. Especially with the chronicle in her heedless hands. It was obliged to slip out of her hands at some point, or maybe even tear a page or two.

Still, that wasn't preventing her from examining the headers of the pages. Several dates, mostly insignificant, scrawled on top of the pages caught her eyes. This journal was old. Raphael had been.. well, dead for a while now and she didn't need the dates on the top of the pages to help her distinguish that. She transferred the journal closer to her body, bending her head over so that the snow managed to land on the back of her head, on her dark brown hair. Curiously flipping the pages until she came upon a family photograph, her feet begged for the comfort of her dormitory. At least inside the school, there was heat.

Her hand rested on a certain photo. Vacations. How fortunate of her. During the summer, she sat at home with her expansive family, but she was considerably satisfied with her position in her household and staying on the ground. The photos made her want to gape. They were certainly amazing images. Without the definite date, it wouldn't have been difficult to mistake the photos for being taken yesterday, of course, maybe even a few years back.

Hearing the new-coming steps crunching against the snow, the young Ravenclaw glanced up from the journal, only to swivel on her feet and tuck her head down, hoping for absolute anonymity. She held the diary to her chest before walking off to head inside of the school, fleeing from the drama bound to happen. If she could have evaded it, she would have. The crisp wind blew against her body in waves; one second it was present, gnawing at her cheeks, then another it had seemed to solely disappear as if nothing had been there all along. Both the liquefying snow in her tennis shoes and the running water down her hair had not made it any better. At least there wasn't any ice to be found, or at least, at the moment. She dropped her arms to shake off the chills forming inside of her body, also shaking the journal at her side as she peered at the footsteps left by the Gryffindor. A few feet had suddenly turned into a mile.

There was an audible chattering of her braced teeth which signalled that it was unbearably cold. Her body was shaking in shivers. She should leave, quit searching hopelessly and head back to the Scottish castle where it was warmer. Still she stayed, curled up in a shivering ball under a tree just breathing the icy cold air into her lungs and reminiscing about the times she had with her Brother whose thoughts for the past few years were embedded in the very book that she had carelessly lost. How foolish it was of her not to keep the precious object somewhere safe, instead choosing to bring it along with her at all times. What she did had its reasons but with the undesirable risks accompanied as well. Yet she took them and now all she felt was regret.

Aurelia had heard about the many tales of Harry Potter and The Dark Lord. Tom Riddle has kept a piece of his soul in his diary, perhaps Raphael had kept his as well. It was unlikely, very. The boy was barely 10 years of age when he passed on with barely any skills to cast a simple spell. These were lies she told herself and yet believed. She had always kept the old thing behind her, in her bag pack so that wherever she went, he was right behind her following. Losing a sibling was a terrifying experience for a mere child and it was these things kept her both insane and sane at the same time. It had also kept him, Raphael, alive or at least alive in her mind. Now it was all gone.

The silence around her was interrupted by muffled footsteps against the heavy snow. Aurelia lifted her head from her knees and turned in the direction of the footsteps. There was a girl and with her frizzy brown hair falling like curtains over the right side of her face which made it impossible to identify who she was. Odd she was to be in such her hurry or to even be out in the snowy cold grounds in the first place.

A strong gust of a bitter chill blew, brushing the girl’s curtain of hair away and finally revealed her identity. Emmaline Hill. No wonder she was in such a hustle. Aurelia wanted nothing to do with the Ravenclaw who was nothing but trouble. Nothing, not until she saw a glimpse of an all too familiar color of a brown book under the girl’s right arm.

It was that moment when she felt her body heat up like a furnace, her blood was pumping with sudden anger that clouding her head and thoughts. The book, it was hers. It was the thing that caused her to make her way all the way to the grounds in the first place. Aurelia was going to give Emma hell. The Gryffindor jumped up to her feet and sprinted towards the Ravenclaw that was already a fair distance away. Though she was quite a good runner, she never knew her feet were able to bring her to such a speed. Perhaps it was the rage that fuelled her.

Within a few seconds, Aurelia was right behind the Ravenclaw but she didn’t slow down. “Emma, you little piece of fucking shit!” The Gryffindor screamed right before running straight into the other brunette and knocking her down. It wasn’t of her to use words of such vulgar language, it wasn’t of a proper young lady to do so but the overwhelming fury made no space for her to think through. Aurelia stretched out for the book in the girl’s hand and at the same time while trying wrestle her down in the thick freezing cold snow. Aurelia knew better than to grab the old aged book. It was fragile and could rip easily. “You had enough guts to mess with my stuff, huh?” The metal on her teeth glimmered in the light as she roared. Her fingers wrapped around Emma’s wrist and squeezing it hard as she could, hoping that it would cause the girl to drop the book. The snow was cold but it couldn’t compare to her icy cold shadow in her eyes that screamed with nothing but pure rage. Emma dared to take the only thing that she had left of Raphael and now hell was upon her.

Although her pace contuned to rise, she knew she could never outrun Aurelia in her years at Hogwarts. She was too fast for her liking, and sometimes that severly annoyed her. Especially now. With talent like hers, she was bound to try out for the Quidditch team, alas, some her family just didn't seem to understand that. Besides, what was the point of being a beater without having someone to target without having shame in injuring them?

Despite Aurelia's yells, Emma continued to run, trying her best not to look back to slow her down. It was only a matter of time until she was stopped, or worse, knocked to the ground. The freezing, snow-stacked ground.

Continuing to pick up her pace, breaking into a small jog then to a sprint, she looked helplessly up to the castle. That is, until she was hit in the back by of course, the Gryffindor herself. First her elbow, then eventually the side of her face, followed by her knee. If the snow hadn't been there, undoubtedly something could have broke, but it was needless to say that the impact had still hurt, even the slightest bit.

"What is your problem, it's just a stupid diary." She said, her voice shaking uncontrollable in the cruel wind. It was cold, she just wanted to go inside and hopefully forget everything that had already happened. "Let my hand go!" The Ravenclaw yelled, trying her best not to wince as she aimed for her face, pushing her off. "And watch your language, Aurelia, please." She said, warningly.

Emma was strong but still Aurelia had an upperhand. The ravenclaw wasn't about to give in and the fragile book reamained in her grasp. No she didn't just call the journal a 'stupid diary'. The leather backed bok was the most precious thing in her posession and the ravenclaw had no right to even put a hand on it in the first place.

"Not if you let go of the book first!" Aurelia yelled right next to the girl's ear. The snow was freezing cold, Emma should be smart enough to know not to push her luck further and do as she says. But from her many experience with the trouble maker, Aurelia knew that Emma was one who wouldn't go down without a fight. Her language? All Emma cared about at the moment was the use of her language? She had even used the magic word, please. It was as if she was purposely attempting to fuel her already blazing rage. Regardless, Aurelia continued to pin the girl down and scream wordlessly with fury.

"Shut up Emma and give my book back!" The girl demanded. Aurelia was close to losing it. If Emma would still choose to refuse, Aurelia swear she would start making it violent. After all, they were already wresting on the icy cold ground. But the next the she knew, the other brunette's palm contacted hard on her left cheekbone causing her to lose her balance and fall to the side slightly. Even then, her grip remained tight on her other wrist which hand held the book she desperately needed back. She was not letting go unless the other did. There were sparks of determinaion in her eyes, she was leaving with the book in her arms. She was not going to let Emma get away.

"Shut up?" The Ravenclaw began, speaking through gritted teeth. Her tone had completely changed from frantic to annoyed. Devious, sarcastic, and of course, cold all somehow present in her voice. "I haven't began to talk about those hideous braces on your teeth." Still wincing a bit, she looked up at the girl, meeting her eyes.

Emma couldn't understand the importance of a fragile, almost unless diary. After all, she had planned to return the diary back into her arms, just not directly. Leaving the diary in front of the Gryffindor common room entrance, or perhaps just giving it to the headmaster of Hogwarts himself. She didn't care as long as she wasn't to be caught with the leather journal inside of her hands. Too bad it was too late.

Why is it such a big deal? The brunette wanted to ask her, but instead she kept those words to herself in fright of the words that might emerge from her mouth again. She didn't mind others cursing, but Aurelia was were she drew the line.

"Let go of my wrist!" She yelled again, shaking her captured hand frantically in attempt to free it from the Gryffindor's cruel grasp. An uneasy pulse tortured her hand, making it more unbearable by the second, still she wasn't going to let go of the journal. Not if she could do something to help.. which technically wasn't even helping at all. "It's just a ridiculous diary, what is so important? It doesn't belong to you, nor your brother."

Aurelia had forgotten about the metal in her teeth when she charged at the Ravenclaw. Perhaps it was the overwhelming anger that overcame the pain in her teeth. Aurelia had intended to hide them from others as long as she possibly can after an incident where another student had bluntly ask what they were. Now Emma of all people was reminding them that they were hideous. What a Bitch she was.

At least I’d have beautiful teeth in a few years. You’d never be as pretty as me with your untamable head of bloody frizz!” The Gryffindor spat back. Emma was putting up a fight so she shall receive a war. To Aurelia, her whole world revolves around the fragile journal and for Emma to take it, she’d regret that she hadn’t laid a finger on it.

That’s none of your fucking business, stom wijf!” the girl kicked at the ground pushing all the snow towards Emma attempting to bury her alive if she had to. Rather strong Emma was when she shook her wrist violently in order to cause her to release her tight grip. Worried that something might happen to the aging book, Aurelia let go of the girl’s arm, instead, curling her fingers into claws like the lion she was and dug them into the girl’s forearm.

Emma calling the book ridiculous angered her further. She had no idea how much it meant to her, the Ravenclaw wouldn’t understand if Aurelia explained it to her. Honestly, it wasn’t because Emma would be able to understand but it was rather the apprehensiveness of being called a pyscho or being laughed at that she didn’t want to. “It’s mine! Why won’t you just give it to me, you stubborn bitch?” once again, the profanities leaked from her lips like freezing cold water.

The Gryffindor was infuriated, it was unnecessary to say that Emma was confused, perhaps even a bit enraged herself by her behavior. Maybe it was simply the full moon, but she didn't try to see eye to eye with her. Not with her body fastened to the ground. At the beginning of the year, inside of the library, it was much easier to contrive against Aurelia, maintaining her distance. This time, she felt it hard to concoct a singular thought. Her emotions were simply acting for her.

"Because I'm the one concerned with my looks, aren't I?" The Ravenclaw snapped at her sarcastically as she dug her hands into the ground striving to reach her feet again. Oblivious to what appearances had to do in the situation, she psychologically forced the thought out of her head. This time, it was much easier to do. "At least I'm not afraid to show it, what other choice do I have, Aurelia?" She yelled, covering her question with annoyance and anger.

"What did you call me?" The Ravenclaw said, her voice spiraling into sheer anger, on the brink of cursing herself. "Ugh! Suéltame!" She said surprising herself a bit, brushing the snow off of her garments as Aurelia proceeded to push more. It was more of a habit than a forcing of words. After all, it was one of the first times she'd revealed her a bit of her heritage.

Though it caught her off guard, her state of reality was broken by a sharp pain in her forearm; the same arm accommodating the book. She let out a wail, though it was on the verge of being a quiet scream. Still, being the uncompromising person Emma was, she wasn't going down without a fight, or of course, until the Gryffindor gave up. Inhaling sharply and exhaling loudly, she tried her best to endure the nails digging slowly into her skin. It was only a matter of time until Aurelia pierced her skin. Instead, she picked up a handful of snow and tried to clump it together as much as she could. Without hesitation or even the slightest feeling in her fingers, she threw it, immediately hitting the Gryffindor's hand repeatedly.

Emma had screamed something in a foreign language, one she had heard before but Aurelia couldn't grasp where. Judging by the way she had spat it out in such a dagger sharp tone, it should have been nothing pleasant. The pureblood twelve year old wasn't one who word physically harm anyone intentionally but overwhelmed by the desperation for the book to be back in her posession, Aurelia cared nothing but to achieve that goal

The gryffindor continued to apply more pressure, digging into the other girl's skin with her neatly trimmed nails. Emma proved herself yet again, refusing to let the book go. Neither one of them were giving up, they were both too evenly matched. The front of her palm suddenly felt freezing cold as Emma began to pound snow onto it. With every second that passed, her fingers got increasingly numb causing her to loose her grip slightly.

Aurelia was losing, she couldnt let Emma get away with the book. Her wand, why hadn't she used it in the first place? Why hadn't she use a simple jinx instead of chasing her all the way down and wrestling her? With her other hand, she reached behind and felt for the smooth cherry wood wand. With the wand in her grasp, she pulled it out from her back pocket. Now she truly had the upperhand.

However, that wasn't many spells that was very effective other than flipendo. The knock back jinx would hit Emma but it might also cause her to be knocked back herself if she didnt cast it properly. Whats worse is that something might happen to the old book. FInally, she had decided on a spell. She lifted ehr wand and set her aim at the girl's hand grasping onto the precious diary.

"Wingardium leviosa!" She incantated at the same time as she made a swift swish as well as flick. As expected, the book began to lift up slowly. Now, the only concern of hers was how to get up and grab the book before her rival does.
