Aspen had just finished making her snowman, Puff, and was heading back into the castle. The cold was getting to the first year and she had a puzzle waiting for her in the Hufflepuff dormitory. Aspen was walking carefully, making sure not to slip on the icy, wet ground, and was doing a good job at it until she got distracted by a singing snowman.

Hitting an icy patch and falling, Aspen reached for her chest, feeling her fingers getting caught in her necklace chain. As she falls, Aspen feels her ankle twisting, and not in a natural way, pain shoots up her leg. Hot and fast. Aspen bites her lip, trying to stop the tears welling up in her eyes from falling. She reaches for her locket, the one with a picture of Aspen and her mother in it, trying to channel the strength her mother always seems to have. She reaches, but the locket is gone.

No This cannot be happening. The floodgates are opening and the tears start to fall. Aspen takes her good foot and attempts to push herself up, but comes crashing right back down onto her bottom. She starts to dig around in the snow, searching for a small, gold heart, but it does not seem to work. Aspen's eyes are blurry with tears and snow, and instead of grabbing a pile of snow, the girl grabs an ankle, pulling the owner of that ankle down to the ground with her.

As the temperature began to drop, the formerly green grounds of Hogwarts laid snug under a blanket of pristine snow. For a fleeting moment, the snow's arrival provided a much needed distraction from the dreariness of past events that had plagued the poor inhabitants of the castle. Along with the grass, all worries seemed to be swept away under the surface, all but forgotten about until rediscovered as time moves forward. All along the grounds were snowmen of all shapes and artistic expressions, with some short to the ground while others were built as tall as the students themselves. Besides for the few other students who were still putting the finishing touches on their frozen masterpieces, Hiram was solitary on his trek back to the castle, snow crunching beneath his boots as he pushed forward from his momentary pause to acknowledge his new snowy companions that stood as silent and unmoving as soldiers. That is, until they started dancing! Despite being born into a magical family, he never seen magic used in such a seemingly silly way. It was interesting, to say the least, enough to make the boy dedicate a few minutes to admire the dancing army of snowmen.

As the wind nipped at his exposed nose, Hiram pulled his scarf further up to his cheeks that began to turn a ruddy complexion from the occasional barrage of the bone-chilling gusts. His black woolen hat with a trim of white sable fur was promptly pulled down over his ears until all that was visible to onlookers was a pair of gunmetal blue eyes and long eyelashes that were already beginning to frost the longer the boy spent outside. Even after years of acclimation to the country's tumultuous weather during the winter months, the wintry wind shocked his system, reminiscent of his first experience with snow and how it took hours afterwards to shake off the chills that subsequently followed. It was during the cold, dark as pitch nights that Hiram longed for the warm embrace of the sea breeze and the long forgotten smells of his savta's cooking that would linger in the home he left six years ago. The only comfort he had now was his mother's worn gray woolen scarf that proved to be an excellent deterrent for both piercing cold weather as well as homesickness that would otherwise gnaw at him. As Hiram gently thumbed the frayed tassels of the scarf, admiring its softness after so many years of use, the fhump! of something...or someone crashing into the snow make him abruptly halt in his tracks. Swinging his head in the direction of the commotion which was over by a hill just a few meters of the path. His windburned cheeks beckoned him to keep along his way back to the warmth of the castle but curiosity held him back.

Reluctantly, he stepped off the cobblestone path, his boots immediately sinking into the deeper snow to the point it threatening to spill over the cuff and soak his socks. Cursing under his breath that hung frozen in the chilled air, he pulled his winter robe tighter around his chest as he went to examine the source of the sound. By the time he reached the hill, Hiram had almost lost his footing more than he would care to admit and immediately regretted his decision to leave his ice clamps back at the dorm. It was then he realised that someone had slipped down the hill and as he began to peer over the edge, something shot out from within the snow and wrapped around his ankle.

Just as a shrill shriek rose in his throat, the wind was knocked out of his lungs and only a choked eech! escaped from his gasp as his backside hit the ground. The pain that reverberated back from the impact on his tailbone rendered him stunned for a moment as he laid motionless in the snow. The first breath he took upon regaining his bearings stung inside his chest, the cold air dragging him back to reality. The boy went to retrieve his hat that had fallen beside him, only then realising the culprit who yanked him down was a girl who was kneeling in the snow by his side. His cheeks immediately began to glow a soft pink as a mixture of embarrassment and anger brought heat to previously cold skin.

The Slytherin yanked his ankle away from the girl's hold as he promptly stood up, wincing slightly as his spine protested with a sharp ache, "Are you absolutely daft? Why would you yank someone down like that when its already icy enough outside. I," He motioned to himself with a superfluous wave of his hand to accentuate the "dire" circumstance, "could've gotten more hurt. You're lucky there was snow to break my impact."

It wasn't until he looked down at the girl with his face scrunched up in a glare that he noticed she was clutching her ankle that looked unnatural in its twisted appearance. The insults he was about to spew caught had gotten caught in his throat and instead of muttering them under his breath, he swallowed his venom back down. Still quite irritated with the whole situation, he folded his arms across his chest for a moment but gradually cooled off enough to lean forward to extend a hand to the girl. "Looks like you did more damage to yourself than me. Come on, I'll carry you to the hospital wing."

Hiram was cringing on the inside as he let those words slip past, knowing that his thin frame was hardly the epitome of strength. The girl's hands had been searching around in the snow for something, evident by how pale and cold they were compared to his warm hands safely hidden behind his mittens. A twinge of guilt struck his heartstrings and reluctantly, he removed his hands from the warmth of the mittens and offered both to her before continuing the search for her. By the looks of the broken necklace around her neck, the girl was missing a piece of it. "What was attached to your necklace? It couldn't have gone far if you just lost it. I suppose I'll help you look."

Aspen realizes her mistake in grabbing someone's ankle, but by then it is too late. A boy comes crashing down onto the snow with her. His mouth twists into a nasty grimace as she reaches for her ankle, but instead of making another rude comment as the girl expected, his gaze softens as he offers to carry her to the hospital wing. Her small hands shake with numbness as she removes them from her ankle to keep digging around. "It's okay, I don't need the nurse. I just... It's my mother's locket. It was a gift to her from my Grandmother when she first left Vietnam and she gave it to me for Christmas with a picture of us."Aspen is well aware by this point that she is rambling, but cannot seem to stop herself, "It's a gold heart." she finally finishes.

The boy offers her his mittens and though she does not want to deprive him of warmth, her fingers are numb at this point. She slips them on, they are warm from her companion's hands and soft, enough so that feeling starts to come back to her.

Aspen attempts to stand again but only makes it for about five seconds before falling into the boy. She winces at the pain in her ankle and sends an apologetic look towards the boy, "I'm so sorry. I guess I should introduce myself though. My name is Aspen." While half leaning on the boy, half-standing, Aspen manages a half-smile and half grimace. She is thankful for this boy, more than he knows.
