Rose loved the Hogwarts grounds. It was really peaceful out here. And so Rose was going for a late-day walk. Another update from her sister Jessica this morning had told her that their mom still wasn't around and that Jess felt like she wasn't going to survive this. Rose was mad at her mom, and she felt guilty for being mad.
It was a beautiful day in mid-September, and school had barely started, though it was gaining momentum. It was the second Saturday of the month and Rose was taking a walk on the grounds to try to calm the buzzing beehive of thoughts in her brain. It wasn't particularly warm or particularly cold right now, and there was a little breeze playing with her amber hair, which was currently down.
And Rose spied Anastasia Beckett.
Rose wanted to smooth things over with Anastasia Beckett. She was a horrible friend to Rose's boyfriend, Eyre Reeves, when he needed her the most. When he needed someone the most.
Anyone.
And Ana had just disappeared off the face of the Earth. Rose had been trying to find a time to Ana, but she couldn't seem to find a time they could be alone. Firstly, Rose was mad at Anastasia. She had caused Eyre much more misery than he was already going through, which isn't, by far, the happy life that he deserved.
Rose was also a little bit scared. Okay, she was really scared. She had heard rumors about this Anastasia Beckett setting people on fire and having a short temper. Anastasia was also bigger than her and older than her. She knew ore spells and, there was even a rumor that she knew an Unforgivable Curse. Rose really hoped she wouldn't loose her temper because her last objective for confronting Anastasia was to make her mad at Rose or, even worse, Eyre.
But when she looked at the situation logically, she realized that there couldn't be a reason that Anastasia was hurting Eyre unless she was also hurting.
Rose's goal was to make Anastasia see what a bad friend she had been and was being and that Eyre was there for her. So was Rose, since Rose was there for absolutely everyone, but they hadn't even met yet, so she doubted Anastasia would trust her like that.
Rose approached her, pushing everything but kindness, understanding, and helping to the very back of her mind.
"Hi, I'm Rose," Rose caught Anastasia's attention. Her voice was soft and American, and it looked like she really wanted to help.
'Breathe in confidence, breathe out fear. You're doing the right thing.'
"You're Anastasia Beckett, right? I was wondering if I could talk to you about something, if that's okay."
Here we go...

Ana had had a rocky start to school. Rocky was a nice word for it, it had been horrible. She was avoiding most of her friends, getting into fights, and feeling angry and sad all the time. She felt like she was screaming and nobody could hear. Normally, rumors didn't bother her, but the ones about her parents got under her skin, especially since there was a hint of truth to them. She may not have killed her mother, but she fully blamed herself for what had happened. It was the only thing about her mother's death that she was perfectly certain of. She had blocked out most of that terrible night, so she didn't know who had done it or why, but she knew with horrible clarity it was her fault.

She was avoiding the Gryffindor Common Room where she generally spent most of her time, since it was also where Rafa and Ivy and Eyre spent a fair amount of time and she didn't want to run into any of them. Especially not Eyre. She couldn't decide if she was angry at him or not. She was aware that she hadn't been entirely fair at the train station, but they had both said some pretty hurtful things to one another, and she had far more important things to worry about than Eyre's hurt feelings. A small nagging voice kept reminding her that he was clearly going through something if what he had said was true, but she ignored it. Even if what he had said was true, she wasn't the person for him to talk to about it. She was dealing with something far more painful, not to mention a sister she didn't know she'd had. Parents turning out to not be your parents was far too common in the Pureblood world. Ana didn't imagine it could be fun, but in the long run, she didn't think it actually really affected anyone.

She sat under a stone arch, her legs bent slightly as her heels rested on the ground. She didn't look remotely like she had the past years, with her leather jacket and messy hair, but she really didn't care at the moment. She stared upwards at the top of the arch and caught sight of a small spider making its way upward. It reminded her terribly of the ant she had been so focused on just before her and Eyre had fought so badly.

A voice pulled her from her focus and her dark eyes swiveled to see who was stupid enough to approach her. She just wanted to keep to herself these days, and it seemed as though the entire student body had made a pact to stop that from happening. "Hi, I don't really care," Ana said when the girl unprompted introduced herself, before turning her gaze back upward. Rose sounded irritatingly earnest, which from experience, meant that she was going to take forever to go away. Ana sighed loudly as Rose continued talking. "You're already talking to me, so spit it out." While Ana's words were harsh and somewhat terse, they were missing the usual venom that would have accompanied them in previous years, instead just sounding slightly annoyed and tired.

It felt like a million spiders climbed up Rose's back as Anastasia dramatically shot back her answers, not even meeting Rose's gaze. Rose fought back her anger at Anastasia- but then noticed how tired she sounded. You didn't have to be sleep-deprived to be tired.
She could be tired of her life, or tired of herself, or tired of having to live with the pain of...
Something?
It was worse than Rose thought.
How to word this?
"Um, I don't want to offend you or anything by saying this, but I wanted to tell you that you're kind of being a bad friend. I'm not one to stereotype or listen to rumors, but from what I've heard, you're usually not this..." the first word that came to her mind fit it well. "Depressed."
Yeah, Anastasia really was acting depressed. Not really caring about anything, everything overemphasized in her head. Rose hooked her hands together behind her back and rocked on her feet.
"And, I know I sound like a preachy annoying little redhead that wants to tell you how you live your life, and you wouldn't be entirely wrong. I don't want to dictate your life, I just wanted to say that whatever happened, you don't have to deal with it without support from other people, that's downright self-harm. And I could name someone who really needed you and you just pulled open the wound. And you definitely don't have to say that other people and their problems aren't valid."

Ana rolled her eyes exaggeratedly when the girl said she was being a bad friend. Ivy, Rafa, Ruby, Eyre, and so many more could attest to that. How was that any of Rose's business? Ana was well aware she hadn't been the best friend to anyone lately, but that was her life and choices. She was trying to protect herself and her friends and she certainly didn't need some random person she'd never even met telling her what to do. She scowled when the girl was saying that Ana seemed depressed. With good reason! Her entire world had blown up over the summer and it seemed that absolutely everything was pointless. In any event, who was this girl to judge Ana or say that she seemed down? "Who even are you?" Ana asked irritably, furrowing her brow as she stared at the redhead.

"First off, I deeply do not appreciate you needlessly inserting yourself in my life and my problems," Ana said, sounding slightly more cranky but still more tired and worn than anything else. When Rose mentioned other people and their problems, she felt a twinge of guilt. That had been happening lately, in addition to all of the other emotions she was dealing with, and she didn't like it one bit. She knew she hadn't been fair to Eyre at the train station, but she also knew that some of the things he had said had made her cry later on, so it wasn't like he was completely blameless either.

"Seriously, who are you?" Ana demanded again, her voice rising. "I didn't ask for Little Orphan Annie to come to tell me everything that I've messed up on recently, and quite honestly, I really don't need you butting in. I'm doing fine, and not that it's even remotely your concern, but my friends would be fine if they could just leave me alone.

Rose was trying to keep her cool. Anastasia didn't have to be such a jerk to her when she was just trying to help. Though Rose did realize that she was probably not helping and just making things worse. Rose Well, maybe Anastasia had to be pushed to the edge of breaking (or maybe even downright just breaking) to realize that she can't push everyone away and she can't treat people that way, no matter how horrible her life was.
"I'm a friend of Eyre's," Rose replied, not really wanting to elaborate on that. Maybe Ana would be even meaner to her than she already was if she mentioned she was Eyre's boyfriend.
Rose sighed back, finding it harder and harder to not start telling Ana what a horrible person she was, and simply pointed out what she did. "Yeah, I know you don't need someone like me, but you do need someone like Eyre- everyone does. And Eyre just needed someone, anyone, and you disappeared off the face of the Earth. I haven't heard your side of the story but it sounds like Eyre needed you and you told him he didn't matter. You were so absorbed in your own problems that you told him when his entire life turned upside down he could go it alone."
Rose really was mad at Ana for hurting Eyre like that, but she kept her cool and her voice was still gentle.
"Your friends would be fine if they left you alone? I may be wrong, but I thought friends were supposed to help you through the hard times of life, not leave you alone." 'She sure has a twisted version of what friends are supposed to be like...'

Ana's jaw stiffened at the mention of Eyre. God, now he was running around lying about her? What the hell? She may have been the one to start their fight, but he was in no way innocent. If he would have just left her alone, then none of it would have happened. And while she might have said some venomous things, it wasn't like he hadn't said some horrible things back. They both knew she was the more temperamental and chaotic one, she had been since they were five, so was it too much to ask for him to leave her alone and not to be surprised if she was snappy when he refused to?

"If Eyre has a problem, he can talk to me about it, not send his little girlfriend or replacement Ana or new sister or whatever the hell you are to deal with it like a bloody coward," she said, anger beginning to leak through to her words. Her glare turned fiery, and if looks could kill, Rose would have fallen dead right there. Had Eyre honestly run and told this random girl all about how terrible Ana was instead of even attempting to fix things with Ana? Who did that? Sure, she wouldn't have exactly been nice, but that hardly gave him the right to go blab to the most generic redhead in the history of ever. "No, you haven't heard my side of things, and you have no right to whine or judge me or intervene or whatever the hell you're trying to do. If you say another word about my life, which by the way, you know absolutely nothing about, I will take a flaming broomstick and shove it up your ass."

Ana was trembling with rage, and if she was honest with herself, hurt. Had Eyre really replaced her that quickly? She hadn't written to him for a month and what, he had replaced her and was now telling every detail of every fight they had to this random person? The idea stung more than what he had said at the train station. "And let's get one thing straight - I need no one. I'm perfectly fine," Ana said, her voice becoming low and dangerous. She had to believe that because it was her only option. She didn't have anyone left that she felt like she could actually depend on. It wasn't even that she didn't think her friends were trustworthy, it was that she didn't think anyone could handle what she was going through. She sure as hell couldn't, so how could she expect her friends to?"And Eyre clearly doesn't need me if he's able to go grab some random pasty freckled soulless little redhead off the streets to whine to. And he's fine, his life is fine. It could always be so much worse."

Insult Rose all you want, and though she may be buckling inside, she will stay strong and in control of her emotions. Insult Eyre and you will get the anger.
"Eyre did not send me, I came myself to try to talk to a depressed, vulnerable snappy brat. I don't know how I expected this to go, but apparently not as well as I had thought." It was true- Rose hadn't really thought about what was going to happen after she said her piece.
She was half-expecting Anastasia to burst into tears when she said it, or start talking about whatever was going on in her life, she expected most girls to do that.
Anastasia was not like most girls.
"And that's kind of what I came here to do- to hear your side and try to smooth things over, not-"
Rose took a shaky breath. "To listen to whatever tantrum you're throwing."
Rose was just the tiniest bit glad that Anastasia was mad, that she was feeling anything at all.
Rose shrugged and her lip curled. "Fine, we won't talk about your life. We'll talk about Eyre's life." Rose started to count on her fingers. "Let's see, his parents don't even like him, his sisters have always gotten all the attention, wait, no, scratch that, turns out his adopted parents never really wanted him for any other reason than to fufill thier petty heir problem, his real mom was ashamed of him, his real dad has been searching for him his entire life, only to be intercepted by his adopted parents. And, while all this was happening, his best friend told him he had it easy-" remembering Anastasia's earlier comment, Rose said, "-still talking about Eyre- and Eyre didn't bother to tell anyone because of said best friend who told him he wasn't valid." She shrugged again. "It could be worse."
Rose's fighting was very petty, very sarcastic.
"I can't think of anything possible that could be worse than that save someone dying. But I would rather be loved and lose that person than never be loved at all."

Ana rolled her eyes so hard for a moment all that was visible were the whites. Was this girl honestly going to hunt her down, demand to know her business, and then call her a brat having a tantrum? Ana had been called far worse by people she held in far higher regard, but the irony of this brat's idiocy annoyed her. She turned her full focus on the unwanted ginger and stood. She was probably only five or six inches taller than Rose, but with her heeled boots and ramrod straight posture, it seemed considerably more.

"Did you think walking up to some random person and poking and prodding in their personal life would go well? Are you honestly that stupid?" Ana demanded incredulously. She felt rage boiling in her stomach, similar to the rage she had felt when she had launched herself at the girl in the hall on Monday. Her nostrils flared as she did her best to control herself. Mean words were something she trafficked in. She didn't particularly worry about how her words affected others. However, lately, it seemed that her nastiness was infecting her actions, and the ease with which she turned to physical violence scared her.

"Eyre's life is fine! It's still the same life he's always had, and he's made it this far! Anyway, he's got Raggedy Ann here to go fight all his battles for him," Ana said, slowly walking closer to the younger girl, her dark eyes burning into Rose's teal ones. "Boo-hoo, his parents are assholes who lied to him! Guess what, so are the vast majority of other people's parents!" Her jaw tightened and her hands clenched into fists as the girl continued ranting at her about how bad Eyre's life was. A small part of Ana felt sick that she wasn't supporting him through this, but she had far bigger things to deal with.

"Well, maybe he should have gotten a better best friend, that's not my fault," Ana scoffed, glaring at the other girl. Ana inhaled sharply, trying to control her rage when the girl began to spew nonsense about death and how it was better to love and lose than never love. She was wrong. She was so wrong and she felt like she just could talk about something like this as though she knew anything. "You are speaking about a topic you know nothing about, so I'm going to give you one chance to back the hell off." On her last word, she shoved the girl backward as though the action would cause Rose to stop interrogating her. Ana was on the verge of hitting the other girl, and if Little Orphan Annie didn't watch it, she was about to be the latest of Ana's victims.

Chills shot up her back as Anastasia stood up. She really was taller than her, and fear reverberated in her before she caught it and snapped it in half. Rose refused to let the fear invade her expression, and she kept glowering at Anastasia. Anastasia really was right- she had no business coming into her life and telling her what to do. Maybe Rose was stupid. Rose almost flinched as overlapping whispers invaded her brain, getting louder and louder. Rose wanted to scream at them to stop, but she had bigger problems.
Anastasia was angry, Rose could tell, and Rose was too.
Anastasia approached her, which made her stomach twist, but Rose stood her ground.
"Just because it happens to everyone doesn't mean it didn't hurt," Rose snarled.
Rose was caught completely off guard as Anastasia pushed her. If she had seen it coming, she might have caught her hands or ducked. Rose flinched horribly as Anastasia's hands pushed her back, her posture caving inwards. Rose caught her own balance in a matter of seconds, and her expression burned more than ever. Her first instinct was to shove Anastasia back, b Rose's lip curled again. Her eyes burned at Anastasia, and but Rose knew she could never win that battle. She wondered if she was going to be the one setting people on fire today. "What makes you so sure? You know nothing about me. And, as a matter of fact, I've gone through both, so yes," Rose exhaled sharply. "I do know."
After a beat of tense silence, Rose raised her chin just the slightest bit. "But fine, I'll leave you to your brooding. I have better things to do than fight with a disturbed idiot."
Giving her an extra second of burning fire, Rose then turned away and started to walk towards the castle.
That was a short roleplay lol feel free to reply one last time

The girl's visible fear didn't bring Ana the thrill it had in previous years. Throughout her first and second years, seeing people cower before her made her feel rather proud and powerful since she had full control of the events that had resulted in that reaction. First off, she didn't have the control over the rumors about her family that she had over the rumors of her fondness for flames and explosive temper.

Secondly and more importantly, this just wasn't what she wanted. She didn't want to be some scary dragon woman who was hurting everyone around her - she just wanted to be alone to drown in her guilt and grief. She didn't see a way through this and the last thing she wanted was to drag her friends into it. Rose had no clue what she was going to and presumed to judge her and tell her what she ought to do differently. That was something Ana hated about this school - how bloody self-righteous everyone was. She was well aware that she wasn't the kindest or most generous person, but she didn't carry herself as though she was. She hated people like Rose, who were little more than petulant silly children who thought of themselves as saints and heroes.

"People live through it. Guess what, Pippi Lockinstocking - life hurts! It's not my problem if Eyre can't deal with that," she said, her barely above a whisper. "No, you're right, I know nothing about you. And unlike you, I don't presume to. But I know that if you had any idea of what it's like to deal with what I'm dealing with, you'd spare me your pietistic judgments." Rose was apparently better at controlling herself than Ana was because she seemed to have the ability to walk away. Ana was shaking with rage, but well aware that the redhead leaving was the best thing for both of them.

Still, she couldn't stand anything other than getting the last word. "God, you and Eyre are a pair of morally superior pathetic little cowards," she hissed. "You deserve each other." With that, she turned on her heel and walked the opposite direction. She was definitely going to need to pace a bit to avoid getting into a fight with the next moving object to come across her path.
