Starry night
Speck of white
Would you know you're made of light
If you were born into the dark?
If someone knew her before she had gone to this school, they wouldn't recognize her now. Katrina Walker had changed so much in two years at Hogwarts that she was now unrecognizable. No wonder her friends left her, they must not remember that that was her.

Katrina's once bouncy auburn hair was now hiding her face in somewhat dull appearance. Her hazel eyes that once had the unmistakable spark of life were now dull. Few things would bring the life back to them. Her face was too pale and her cheeks too sunken in. Her lips that used to smile and always be babbling were now frozen into the expression of boredom. Her clothes were disheveled and wrinkled occasionally, when they used to be neatly folded and sometimes even ironed in an attempt at looking presentable. The only thing that people recognized was the teal streak in her hair, and even that was starting to fade.

The Gryffindor was currently skipping dinner, as she had had lunch. She normally only had one meal a day and an optional snack later. She was currently eating an apple from one of the trees farther in the campus. No one ever found it so the apples were often her snack.

It was somewhat pleasant being alone. No one was there to judge her prematurely or give her odd glances. No overly-happy first years ready to bounce up and try to fix all of her impossible problems. No teachers or staff somewhat worried about the lonesome girl she had become. No one but the trees, grass, and a few tired birds.

Katrina found a large hill and took the blanket from under her arm. She spread it out on the far side, away from the prying eyes of the castle. The lioness lay down on the old red plaid stretch of fabric and leaned back on her hands, legs far in front of her.

Dusk had just fallen, the tall trees blocking out the dappled sunlight. That is when she saw it. A lone firefly flapped its wings out of the taller grass and toward her. The creature landed on the blanket beside her, and Katrina cupped the bug in her hands. It was small and tiny, a distinct light on its rear lighting up her cupped hands.

Then in one flurry of motion, the field in front of her lit up. Hundreds of the tiny insects took flight. Never leaving the grass. For a long time Kat rested there, entranced by the dancing of the specks of white in the dark.

A melody Katrina knew came to mind, and she couldn't help but hum it quietly. It was a newer song, one a violinist played flawlessly. The red-head settled in and time passed her by.

At some point, Boomerang joined her side. The little feline followed her wherever she was. He settled himself in her lap and began purring furiously. An absentminded hand pet his back.

I really miss Liam, you know that Boomerang? I had thought that he was still alive, I guess I was just fooling myself. “ A small sigh escaped her lips, “I had even gotten to the point that I was okay with it. But who even knows what summer will bring? No one in the family wants me so I’ll be at school again all summer.” Boomerang stood up and purred before plopping his small frame beside her arm. “At least you’re still love me,”

The little dew drops started to collect on the grass from a previous rain, causing footprints to be left where people had walked. One person began to make their way back from the Quidditch grounds, her gear in hands. This figure made their way to the top of the hill where they could see the big doors that led inside the castle. They stopped walking and sighed, taking in the view of the grounds.

Annie Morgan had just finished up Quidditch practice. She went out there a lot it was an easy way to clear her mind of everything that had gone on recently. A small image of fire and smoke flashed through her mind and she shivered, although she was not cold. The girl bit her lip as dusk had began to creep in and cast shadows across the grass. The brunette figured she should get back inside and get some rest.

Before the girl could finish her thoughts, a bronze and white owl shot itself out through an open window and came soaring over to her. Annie's eyes twinkled in amusement as Eiryk, her feathered friend shrieked to alert her of his arrival before fluttering down and perching on her shoulder. "Hey there handsome, sorry I missed dinner, were you waiting for me?" He closed his eyes as Annie scratched his neck. She noticed he didn't have a letter and a small part of her was hopeful but it turned quickly into sadness. "Ah no letter from mum? I suppose she is doing okay, I just haven't heard from her recently.." Annie chewed her lip again, this time in a nervous habit.

"I can't be walking with you through the halls, go back from where you came and find your way to the owlery okay buddy?" The owl, seeming to understand her nibbled on her earlobe in an affectionate way before soaring back inside and out of sight. She felt her arms grow sore with all the equipment she was carrying, thankful they at least could keep their brooms in the locker room. The girl shook her head and continued her way to the castle almost making it to the doors before stopping upon the sight of a girl and her cat.

Annie tilted her head, not thinking the girl had seen her but she had seem to come in at the end of a conversation with a girl. All she caught was
“At least you’re still love me,”
and it made her sad. The brunette didn't want to scare the girl by saying anything but she simply stopped and waited to see if she would be noticed before going in. Sure it was getting dark, but she felt more concerned about the girl at the moment.

Did you know?
Down below
Worlds beyond would see you glow
Long, long after you're gone
Katrina bit her lip, trying to keep from crying. She had cried enough, each day she would find herself crying or mourning or feeling depressed. The worst part about all of it was the fact that the feelings never went away, instead they churned and swirled and surged in her like a wild beast. What she needed was to get it all out.

Katrina pet Boomerang absentmindedly, watching the fireflies do their nightly dance. The song that she had just remembered surfaced in her mind again. The second stanza, speaking about not knowing that you shine on those who you didn't know, played through her mind. Did Katrina even shine on anyone else, was anyone else even affected by her?

"You know Boomerang, sometimes I wonder if anyone would notice if I left. Like if next year I ran into London and never came back here. But, I suppose there would be nowhere for me to go." Boomerang suddenly lifted his head and his ears perked to a noise behind her. Katrina turned her head slightly, as if to watch a tree in the distance, but in reality she was checking to see if anyone was behind her.

To Katrina's dismay, there was someone standing there. She turned back to the fireflies who had now began to disperse. Who knows who the person was. Perhaps it was an upperclassmen who would ridicule her. Maybe it was a Professor who would order her to the Great Hall for dinner or put her in detention. There was a chance that the person wasn't even there at all, but purely a figment of her paranoid imagination.

Instead of acknowledging the person behind her, Katrina pretended nothing had happened. She raised the guard shields around herself and stuffed her emotions deep into the back of her mind. The lioness slipped the mask of smugness and self-confidence that she had never really felt and hid behind it, not wanting anyone to see the broken orphan she was.

"Hello," Katrina asked in a somewhat sarcastic tone, one that betrayed everything that was really the second year. "Come to tell me to go to dinner?" The air of self confidence radiated from her tone, even though her face betrayed it. Luckily, she had the intuition to not turn and show her conflicted face.

Katrina pat Boomerang to send him off and murmured softly, hopefully soft enough that the person behind her couldn't hear, "I'll meet you in the Common Room in an hour for your dinner," At the prospect of food, Boomerang stood up and purred once before bounding away.

Katrina shrugged her shoulder to the other half of the blanket, "Well, if you aren't going to send me to dinner, you can take a seat beside me," Her tone was a bit softer this time, she didn't want to make enemies after all. Katrina squished her emotions into a box and stuffed them away, still not turning to the figure behind her, "It's alright if you don't want to either. Either way, I promise I won't bite,"
@Annie Morgan Sorry Katrina's so aloof! :sweatingbullets: I'll fix it next post I promise!
