A Tangled Mess of Emotions & String
Katrina jogged up a trail from the school. Her leather satchel at her side bounced with every gait. The 12-year-old's auburn hair was tied up in a loose ponytail that swished from side to side. The movement was effortless, a speed only slightly faster than walking. A few students were around, but it still felt like Katrina was alone. A song from a muggle movie drifted and echoed in her head.
7 AM, the usual morning lineup.
Start on the chores and sweep 'til the floor's all clean.
Polish and wax, do laundry and mop and shine up.
Sweep again and by then it's like 7:15.
And so I'll read a book.
Or maybe two or three.
It was from a childish movie, but the song still incessantly sung in her ears. Without realizing it, she began quietly humming in a soft, somewhat pitchy, voice. Before her parents tragic death, music had always been around. She had learned a bunch of chords on the piano and with the aid of her brother's dumbs, dad's guitar, and mom's amazing voice, they created a kind of a band. Her voice had become perfectly tuned and she always had something stuck in her head.
However, when her parents had died, the song within her died as well. The aching her chest began to ache again and Katrina sped up to force away the emotions.
Before deciding to go out for a jog, Katrina had been in the courtyard embroidering some. It was a sort of event hosted by a professor. The muscle memory had released a bunch of emotions in her head and left her feeling almost raw. But before leaving, Katrina had grabbed some extra materials.
A stitch in her side slowed Katrina down to a more leisurely pace. She spun around to see that the castle was about a half a mile away. She lifted on arm and extended her hand, covering the castle completely. Perspective was such an odd thing.
She turned off the path and found a tree with large low-hanging branches. The lioness hoisted herself up three branches until she found a relatively comfortable crook that she could sit herself down in. The red-head drew out a swath of green fabric and some silver string from her satchel.
Inspiration flitted away from her. She wrinkled her forehead and thought about Bridget. Bridget had become her closest friend recently. It would be really nice if she made something for her. Katrina decided she would make an embroidered snake.
The design turned out really ragged and it looked more like a wolf tail than a snake. She gave up on the snake and decided to make a wolf instead. Well, oh well. She orchestrated the fuzzy creature and somehow her result was perfect and adorable. Who knew?
The art calmed the mess of tangled emotions in Katrina. And slowly, she began to feel better.
