There Must Be a Mistake
There must be a mistake. There must be a mistake! Alina Rosier sat on the steps of the Entrance Hall and lifted the letter from her father with shaky hands. The tear-stained letter said how proud he was of her for making it to Hogwarts and wished her well on her first days. But she didn’t even know what she could write in response.
She was devastated by the days events. She was Alina Rosier of The Sacred Twenty-Eight, with members of the Slytherin house going back for centuries. CENTURIES! It was more than a long-standing tradition, it was an expectation. A given really...until now. Her twin sister Bella had been accepted into Slytherin with all the other past family members but Alina? Alina was sorted into the house of Hufflepuff.
Hufflepuff.
“What? No! There’s been a mistake! There has to have been a mistake!” She had shouted to the heavens in the Great Hall during the sorting ceremony. Even the hat had seemed startled. “This ugly horrid ratty decrepit old hat has made a HUGE mistake! I cannot be in a house filled with muggleborns, halfbreeds, the plain and simple, and the rejects of the school!” Oh yes, she went there...outloud, to the entire school. “Wait until my father...” but then she gasped and ran out of The Great Hall in tears.
And here she was. Her father would be expecting a response. What would he say when he found out one of his daughters was not accepted amongst the Slytherin house? Would he ever forgive her? In other families of The Sacred Twenty-Eight, children had been disowned for such things.
What Alina needed was a friend.

Meredith saw the girl who apparently hated Hufflepuff run out of the great hall super dramatically and thought" YES!!! Finally someone I must become friends with because they understand how to be dramatic and this girl might not of tried to be dramatic while she ran out of the room but man did she do that. I really hope we can be friends but she is a Hufflepuff and they are supposed to be calm and loyal but this girl should of been a Slytherin for sure. Meredith slowly creped out of the great hall and followed the girl it wasn't very hard to find her because she was crying her face off and she really looked like she needed a friend because the girl looked super lonely and Meredith could make her father laugh when he was mourning over her dead mother so she knew she could give this girl and laugh or a good friend but in the process she could also give this girl a very annoying enemy or something of the sort so she had to pick her words very carefully so this girl could have a good friend. " Hello, My name is Meredith and I am a first year Slytherin." She said proudly " And you should be to but the reason that that old hat put you in Hufflepuff is probably because you smart mouthed it and because it thought you will learn from this time of your life, And thought it was kind of dramatic how you ran off from the hall." Meredith knew this girl would most likely respond rather annoyedly and if she didn't Meredith would be very surprised but she knew they would be very good friends because this is how all of the people in books and movies became friends so Meredith knew they would be the same or not...…..

In her complete rage, she was still focused on that awful old hat and mostly caught three things the girl said: 1) she was first year; 2) she was Slythern; and 3) she agreed she should be in Slytherin. It wasn't like she knew her, but perhaps she knew OF her or at least her family. She was a Rosier of the Rosiers of The Sacred Twenty-Eight. (And yes, she would bring up that fact every moment she could until she was no longer proud of the name).
So in saying the last statement, Alina looked up because it appeared that the girl and her had a common enemy of sorts - in that they both didn't like this sorting hat. A sorting hat! How absurd!
"So a talking head accessory determines our traits...or ridiculous us...and we feel the effects for seven years? That's how it works around here?" she folded her arms up and sighed heavily. It was more than that, so much more than that but not something shes could tell this new girl she met. It wasn't even something she could share with her sister who wouldn't understand.
"Do you think...do you think it really matters? One's house? They say it can't be changed..." By now she was looking for advice.

Meredith listened to this girl talk about how stupid the hat was and why it was so stupid and she agreed a little bit because why did it have to be a hat why not a living person with real opinions that matter. Meredith then said to this girl," Well I guess it was kind of a dumb decision to make a hat pick the houses and it could be a real person that decided who was in what house, But Godric Gryffindor pick the hat to decide and I think that it was rather dumb to but someone has to do even if that someone is a something or somewhat I guess." Ack!!!! WHY CAN'T I TALK LIKE A NORMAL PERSON TO OTHER PERSONS!!!!!!! She thought angerly at herself. Meredith thought about the sorting hat as she sat down next to the girl. "Well, I never got your name what is it? And I like your hair by the way.' She said with a faint smile hoping she could cheer up this girl. She seems rather nice maybe we could be friends, But we are in different houses so we might not really be able to be friends because of our house different houses. She thought to herself ignoring the fact that her and this girl she wanted to be friends with so much were in different houses.

"Alina," she said, not even wanting to give her last name. Before this sorting ceremony she would have gone on about how she was Alina Rosier of the Rosiers of The Sacred Twenty-Eight pureblood families but now that seemed all a joke. No, it wasn't a joke - SHE was the joke.
"I thought I'd like this school. I never really had been on my own before. I've left home, moved to a different country and traveled to so many countries but this is different, you know? I thought I'd meet likeminded peers and we'd be friends and it would be the beginning of such a great adventure."
Right now it didn't feel like an adventure at all. It felt like a terrible nightmare." You know what I'd love to do right now? I'd like to go around this entire castle, find every photo showing the headmaster, and place a picture of a troll right over top. Because that's what he is, a downright troll for letting a hat make such decisions," she grumbled and stood up on the steps.
Alina was quite short, even for the age of eleven. Not so short it was abnormal but she most certainly was probably one of the shortest there at Hogwarts. Still, small and mighty. She placed her hands on her hips and looked at the girl. "You in?"

Meredith looked at this girl named " Alina" and said to her," Um I don't know... My father said if I got in trouble he might take me out of school and take my wand so I don't really know." She really wanted to be this girls friends but if it meant no more magic and school with people like her then she could not be part of this plan even if she wanted to. I would do this if I could but I just can not do it because of my father and I like it here already so I will not take part in this evil doing to the Headmaster because I will not be suspended today or tomorrow or ever! She thought unsurely for this could be her only chance with a friend or anything to do with this girl. " I am sorry but I can't be part of this so you will just have to find someone else and I like the Headmaster and he didn't pick the hat for the sorting because it was when the founders pick the hat to sort the first years that Godric Gryffindor decided that the hat should pick who goes where, Not Professor Lear or any of the staff." Meredith said trying to stay calm and not yell because Alina wanted to do something to the Headmaster who she admired very much.

"He still chooses to use that ratty old thing," Alina sighed. She'd work on her plan alone then and that was okay with her. Maybe this girl held admiration for the Headmaster and rules. Good for her. Alina sighed, "This entire business has made me downright annoyed. It's a shame we're not allowed to go into that town over a ways...Hogsmeade. I hear they've got a sweet shop there. I wonder if there's any ice cream shop like how Diagon Alley has Florean Fortescue's. I bet the kitchens would have a nice supply of ice cream...but then I'd have to converse with the elves," and she shivered.
She was doing a lot of talking, no, not talking - rambling. She did that quite often. Alina stood up. "I'm glad some like this place," she then said. Meredith had mentioned liking it there. "I find this place to be downright miserable. They say it'll help us encourage our independence and ready us for the world beyond and yet we can't even make our own decisions. We can't go into the Forest, we can't take certain classes before our time, we can't go into Hogsmeade, we can't choose our own house. Can't, can't, can't, can't."

"Well he doesn't have much of a choice for sorting objects because no one really wants the job or there would be no sorting hat that probably has lice living in it." Meredith said and then heard what Alina said last," We can't go into the Forest, we can't take certain classes before our time, we can't go into Hogsmeade, we can't choose our own house. Can't, can't, can't, can't." is what she had said. Meredith knew what she was about to say was going to sound really dangerous but why not? " Well maybe we can go into the Forest unless you don't what to of course, Because I know a way we can go in the Forest and into Hogsmeade, But going into Hogsmeade will be harder than just walking into centaur territory because we would need to buy something that cost five Galleons a " fake permission slip" which is only sold at Weasley Wizard Whizzes which is in Diagon Alley witch we can not go to till break witch is coming up soon so lets try to make some money before then. Okay?" She said with a mischievous smile on her face thinking about what will happen when they go into the Forbidden Forest and hoping that they don't get caught doing it or caught by the creatures that live in the Forest.

Do something to make money. That made Alina smile and almost laugh. She was a Rosier! Charles Rosier's daughter and lived in one of the most expensive estates in England, perhaps even all of Europe. Still, after making such of a fool of herself, its not like she would have many that interacted with her and this girl's idea caught her interest. It could give them both something to do.
"Make money..." she repeated, almost smiling again but cleared her throat to stop herself. Stop it, Alina! Stop it! "I wonder what we could do... I'm not too bad at drawing and I love to make things using nature..." she paused to think of more. "I can offer one hell of a makeover and I like making jewelry."
Would any of those ideas work? Maybe they could create something trendy that could catch on at the school and really make a go of it. "...I wonder if we couldn't find some really good recipes. Sneak into the kitchens to make them. Sell 'em to everyone." That was another idea. She looked back to Meredith, curious to know her thoughts on the matter or if she had any ideas to add to it.

Meredith almost laughed at the idea of sneaking into the kitchen, Didn't Alina know how to get in or that you were allowed to go into the kitchen. " Sneak into the kitchens! Ha! We could go there now there is no way to sneak into the kitchens unless it is after hours witch it is nearing so if we go now then we will need sneak back up to our common rooms.... OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! The sorting must be over and the feast we won't know how to get into our common rooms so we need to get back to the great hall like NOW!" She said quickly. " Why why why why could I not be able to notice that the sun was going down. We are going to be so late and in a whole lot of trouble if we don't get a move on." "Lets get going before we get put in detention for a few days or locked out of our common rooms, Or we could sneak to the kitchen now and stay there through the night with the super crazily ugly house elves but we could get back to the great hall and hope to talk to the Headmaster about getting to our common rooms, But of course you won't want to talk to the horrible Headmaster because he uses a hat to sort people into the houses." Meredith said with a teasing grin on her face.
