It was a shame when they arrived back near the courtyard, only a short distance from the rest of the awakening school. It was time for breakfast, and Flash’s stomach was ready for it after the exercise. He found himself delighted to be able to banter about superheroes, normally he would have gone on about whatever dull thing the other persona wanted to talk about… themselves, usually. Instead, the two of them had hit it off right away, and their similar interest was only a small part of that. Chemistry, maybe. Though Flash always tried to become whatever others wanted from him, he could still tell when things were easier or harder. That was just a matter of how different people were, there were some people that no matter how hard you tried, you would always struggle to become closer. Others, like Willow, were such a natural fit that even on the first acquaintance it felt as though she had always been meant to be a part of his life. He didn’t know if he could say quite as much about Anastasia, but wanting to be around someone more was a good feeling. Hope for the future, something to look forward to.

”Wonder Woman… a fantastic choice. A warrior, and ambassador of truth. She never backs down no matter how hard things get… I like her a lot too.” Flash mused on the qualities of Diana Prince. The character had many vast iterations, as all famous comic book characters do, but most of hers were fantastic.

Still, he could only delay the inevitable for so long. He feared his stomach might betray him and start growling. He turned to face Anastasia properly, bowing slightly as though asking for forgiveness.

”I regret to say breakfast is calling me. Thank you for keeping me company.” Flash started to turn to enter the big doors to the Great Hall, but turned back again. ”I hope I’ll be seeing a lot more of you.”
Timeskip to 9/13/2020
From that day, Flash and Anastasia did start seeing a lot more of each other. Not only did they run into each other a few times in the early morning, but she also invited him to join the S.W.A.G. club, which had its first meeting earlier that week. It was a wild ride, but also a delightful diversion. It only strengthened his conviction that he enjoyed spending time with her. Willow had noticed too, having also been a part of the game. She naturally saw Flash going up to speak with her, and inquired about it later on.

Not that there was much to say, but they did discover that she was a mutual acquaintance. Enough so that Willow invited herself to a weekend walk with the two of them. Flash had no qualms of course, there was no better way to spend a lazy Sunday morning than in the company of two girls who brought him cheer. He looked forward to it. He didn’t know if he was quite ready to have company every morning, there were still days where he needed to be alone, but his spirits were starting to lighten. Whether that was Anastasia’s influence, or merely distance and time away from home, he didn’t know. Either way, he was bright eyed and bushy tailed on his way to gather Willow at their usual spot from the year before.

Without thinking about the reflex much, Flash pulled up his right arm and looked at the wrist. His frothy mood deflated a bit when all he saw was a slightly lighter band of skin, where the summer sun had neglected to tan. Some days he wore Valerius’ watch, some days he didn’t. He could decide which option hurt more. No matter which one he did, it was still a reminder. Perhaps it was better that he just wore it, at least then he would know the time.

Willow and Flash had agreed to spend their mornings having more alone time than last year where they spent every morning on walks together. It was something that she was wary about first, worried that this was his way of distancing himself from her. It was a worry that had come up time and time again with him, worry that he would leave her. But the summer she had with him, just that one weekend of bonding, had given her enough strength in knowing that they had an unbreakable bond that made it quite easy to bat those thoughts away. She had also taken the mornings to take a walk down to the Great Lake and start focusing on her art, venturing outside of her normal art of just nature subjects. She wanted to be more versatile than her family had provided the experience for, not that they ever told her she couldn't do other subjects besides plants, it's just what she always stuck with.

This morning she ditched the art journal however for a handy three mugs of tea. There was something in her that longed for the walks every now and again, so she was hoping this would satiate her for awhile. Even if someone were to be joining them this time. Someone that she had met by crying by the Great Lake, talking about who they were outside of what they've been told their entire lives. It was a moment where they developed something between them, a friendship maybe, that Willow would hold close to her. Especially since they had seen each other just the day before while grooming animals with a certain Astrea from Slytherin. They hadn't seen each other at all really through the last year, but suddenly they seemed to be walking in each other's paths. Hopefully side by side rather than in opposite ways.

She couldn't help but be mildly surprised when she found out that Flash knew her too. They didn't have many mutual friends between each other. Rather she found herself getting quite lost in the exclusivity that was their siblingship. She wanted to see Flash around others, see how he was different, how he was the same. She mostly just wanted to hang out with two of her friends.

The bounce in her step hadn't left, though she was trying to keep it softer to not spill the tea everywhere. They might as well have something to sip while they walked. The cold chill was starting to run through the air in Scotland, so she picked a particularly warm feeling blend for herself and Ana, while giving Flash his usual campfire-esque favorite. When she rounded the corner she saw him looking just slightly forlorn. Was she late? Did Ana cancel? "Hey you~" A bright, yet concerned smile donned her face. "You doing ok today? We could always postpone if you're not up for it." She wanted to be accommodating, helpful, especially when he might not be able to ask for the help first.

The 'fit
Ana's resolve to keep to herself had already completely failed. She and Flash had seen quite a bit more of one another over the past several days, and she found that, despite her decision to stop liking other humans, she was growing rather fond of the boy. The SWAG game had been rather chaotic and Ana had mixed feelings about it, but she was certain she had enjoyed seeing him there.

He had mentioned Willow would be joining them that morning, and she had finally remembered that she meant to bring coffee with her, so as she walked out that morning, she was precariously balancing several mugs of coffee. She had dumped quite a bit of sugar all three mugs, as well as cream in the mugs she intended to share with her companions.

The breeze moved her hair across her face and she blew at it trying to move it since her hands were otherwise occupied. The coffee had taken longer than normal, seeing as she had brewed three times as much as she normally did, so her hair was loose for once, since she was already running later than she would have liked. Not that she remembered setting an exact time, but she normally arrived earlier than this.

Despite her general dark mood these days, she was looking forward to this. Willow was quite possibly one of the warmest and sunniest people she knew, and Ana enjoyed Flash's company far more than she would have admitted to anyone who asked. She shivered slightly, despite her sweater and jacket. Her genius plan of making the coffee as hot as possible so that it would still be warm when she reached Flash and Willow had deeply backfired. Her fingers were already a bit burnt from carrying the scalding mugs, but the rest of her was cold. She was remembering why she wasn't a particularly outdoorsy person.

She felt her necklace swinging around inside her sweater. She still wasn't certain why she was wearing it. It wasn't something she had worn before her mother died, and if she was being sentimental, the vast majority of her wardrobe and accessories had been chosen by her. Still, there was something about this specific necklace that she felt connected her to her mother.

"Great minds think alike," she said as she reached the pair, gesturing towards Willow's mugs. "Flash, you had mentioned you were curious about coffee, so..." She bit her lip as she trailed off slightly. She was blushing. Why was she blushing? Considering all that had occurred over the past several months, she would have thought that she was no longer capable of blushing. The pink that rose to her cheeks was proving her wrong. It was the cold. For sure. No other reason.

She tried to sound a bit brighter than she felt, which wasn't saying much. Her week had begun with punching someone in the face and subsequently getting punched and hadn't improved much from there. Still, she was uncharacteristically optimistic about this morning.

Before Flash could fall too deeply into his thoughts, he was called to attention by the sound of shoes on stone. He lifted his drooping head to see Willow, a familiar sight that brought warmth to his heart. That was right, the company for the morning was going to be two wonderful people. He needed to get his head out of the clouds, and focus on the love directly in front of him. He could have felt ashamed, the way Willow had to ask after him. He should have known better than to wear such an obviously morose face.

”Oh Willow… no, I’m alright.” Flash’s voice was soft and quiet, the first thing he had said all morning. ”Quite the contrary, I’m really looking forward to spending time with you both.”

Flash could smell the Lapsang Souchong like a morning bell, it was remarkable for its boldness in both smell and taste. Burnt wood. As an ancient tea, it was not complex, but instead a tool for power. Caffeine and a taste that punched you in the face. It was the closest one could get to chewing on charcoal, though surprisingly tasty once one got used to it. Even the wafting steam from the cup gave him slight chills, it had actually been a while since he had it.

Before Flash could negotiate grabbing the cup from Willow’s grasp, he heard the second pair of shoes approaching. This one was also accompanied by a distinct, bold smell. The smell of coffee. It was slow motion from there, lifting his head to see Anastasia struggling with three hot cups herself. Seeming to be the worse off of the two, Flash hurried to her side to relieve her of the burden. Luckily, the courtyard had a lot of small alcoves where students usually gathered to sit, they were made out of sturdy stone, and he could one by one transfer the boiling cups from shaky hands to flat surfaces. He wasted no time, simply muttering an ‘oh’ before snapping into action.

Once he transferred both Anastasia and Willow’s drink to safety, he beheld the six cups with something like astonishment. Anastasia mentioned Flash’s interest in coffee, which only made him want to try it all the more. He was flattered that she followed up with such an offering, so much so that he stammered a bit before being able to reply, the confidence in asking from days before having been overshadowed by the allure of being paid attention to.

I-ah-haha… yes, of course.” Flash reddened a bit himself, not usually one to speak so abruptly. ”With all this I… I think we had better sit down instead of walk today.”

It wasn’t a decision he expected to come up against any protest. There was little chance that they would be looking forward to carrying two cups around like it was some sort of egg balancing field day game. This way, they could all take their time and avoid serious scalding. When looking back at Anastasia for her approval, however, he was surprised to see that her hands were red. He knew the culprit, and felt responsible.

”Your hands…” Instinctively, though he should have known better by now, he gently took her hands in his to look at the damage closer. Her fingertips were freezing, even though the red was clearly from burning. How much pain was she ignoring? ”You poor thing.”

Flash reached into his back pocket were some thick, insulated gloves where. He was always prepared for any occasion, as much as he could be. He kept a pair tucked away in case he needed to pick some thorny wildflowers or if the autumn weather became too unbearably cold. He felt glad that it could be of some kind of use. Placing them in Anastasia’s hands, he didn’t want to give her the option to refuse.

”I hope this helps, if even just a bit.” Flash smiled at her, hoping the offering was willfully accepted rather than foisted upon.

Her eyes narrowed at Flash's statement of being ok. There was something off about his energy. "I don't quite believe you. But... I'll let it be. Next tea time, you're not safe." It was supposed to be a gently threat of support and comfort. Something that Flash had never taken to that easily. It was a feeling that she had been trying to get him used to ever since they met, and it seemed like she saw the tipping point over the summer when he sobbed into her hair just for saying 'I love you.' Before she could distribute the tea, both of their attentions seemed to be grabbed by the last member of the morning drink group approaching. They would be... so caffeinated. Which was probably the worst thing for their age, but not something Willow was exactly cognizant of.

A bright smile overcame her as she watched Flash stumble. He basically never stumbled. He was letting his guard down around someone, and that was so exciting for her to witness. She did feel slightly awkward watching Flash tend to Ana's burns. While she happily held two warm drinks that she could lose herself in. While she sipped the coffee, she recoiled just slightly at how bitter it was despite the sugar and cream. Luckily, the other two seemed to be occupied between themselves so she didn't have to worry about her initial reaction to coffee being poor. As she looked at their hands full of mugs, she couldn't help but mutter to herself "How... are we supposed to hold hands... so many drinks." The other two would be able to hear her over them falling in love if they were paying even the mildest attention.

She had quite the quizzical look on her face, this was an absolute conundrum. She couldn't even hug Anastasia in greeting and that was the worst. After it seemed like Flash and Ana's interaction was done, the quizzical looked turned into something of a lightbulb. She could just put the drinks down! So that's what she did. She set her drinks on the floor near the wall, walked up to Ana, silently took her drinks and put them next to hers, before returning to wrap her in a big hug. Willow's head rested gently against her shoulder as she was once again, the smallest in a group. "I've missed you Ana." After a couple moments, she pulled back with a smile that was akin to how a daisy looked popping out of the ground for the first time in spring. Willow then politely returned their drinks to their proper owners before skipping out of the doors to find a bench for them to rest and talk.

The brave badger made a bold choice to walk backwards through the grounds, but after walking them so much it didn't really feel like anything she should be worried about. "So... Ana how long have you been drinking coffee? And... how. Like, I'm not gonna lie. This is... an interesting flavor. I don't know how you'd drink this every morning. You know there's a form of divination with coffee grounds like there is with tea leaves? Although, my family always drinks tea so I've never been able to try it. Maybe we could try it together sometime." The bright sun was rising, and so was Willow. Her spirit bright with the energy of a million questions. "I think Flash will like it though, since he basically drinks a burnt log in a cup with the tea that he prefers." She gave him a little wink. She truly didn't understand how he like his tea choice so much, it was one of her least favorites but. To each his own she supposed.

The 'fit
She nodded at Flash's suggestion, since carrying multiple hot drinks was a recipe for disaster. Between the cold and the way that her stupid heart was racing, words were not something that she considered to be her friend right then. All of her years of lessons in etiquette and enunciation seemed to vanish when she was even mildly flustered by a boy, which, despite her own unwillingness to acknowledge it, was definitely the case. Smiling at Flash, she did her best to compose herself so that she would at least be able to use words and converse without being a complete moron. Memories of face planting and spilling coffee on a certain older Gryffindor sprung to mind, and she was not eager to repeat any aspect of that. Her brain was operating in coherent sentences that were mostly English now, so she felt a bit more confident about her abilities to function as a human.

Then Flash took her hands and Ana's brain short-circuited again. She could remember any time that someone had seemed that genuinely concerned and trying to help. Any minor injury would generally warrant a scolding from her parents before she was sent to get it dealt with. Considering how often she managed to get herself sent to the hospital wing for things like falling off her broom, her friends were generally a bit less concerned about smaller things like this. Her breath caught in her throat and her brain had beyond abandoned both English and anything resembling coherence. "Oh-um, I," Ana sputtered, blushing furiously. Thankfully, Flash's focus was split between her and pulling something out of his pocket, so there was a small chance her utter failure to be a human would go unnoticed.

If Ana was a frazzled mess before, Flash giving her the gloves made it a thousand times worse. Growing up, she had been given all sorts of jewels and expensive baubles, but very few gifts that actually meant anything. Now, Ana was a complete sucker for any gift that was truly meaningful, whether a friendship bracelet from Willow or a scribbled drawing from Abella's young son. "Thank you," Ana said, thrilled that her brain was managing to produce words. She pulled the gloves onto her hands before smiling back at Flash. "Much better."

It occurred to her that they weren't actually alone and she felt absolutely horrid for ignoring Willow. Glancing over at the Hufflepuff, who seemed to be contemplating some very serious problem, Ana smiled slightly. Willow, seemingly have solved whatever issue she was so bothered by, wrapped Ana in a big hug, which was rather impressive considering Ana was nearly a foot taller than her friend. Ana happily returned the embrace. It was as if Flash and Willow were out to make her cry, between the hugs and the gloves and the concern for her wellbeing. "I've missed you too, Willow," Ana replied. Willow was quite possibly one of the loveliest people Ana had ever encountered, and despite the fact that their paths didn't cross as often as Ana might like, Ana considered her something of a friend.

"Oh, since first year, I think," Ana told Willow, laughing slightly. She and Flash had had an exchange along the same lines the first time they met, and there seemed to be no end of people confused and mildly concerned by her fondness to the dark, bitter drink. As she opted not to go around telling others that she didn't sleep more than a few hours most nights and depended on the drink for continued functioning, her explanations were often rather weak. "I mean, I suppose I've developed a taste for it by now. It's as much of a habit as anything else."

She envied Willow's energy. Ana was certain that if she found a way to bottle it, it would be far more potent than coffee or anything else for that matter. "Oh, yes, we talked about that in Divination that other day," Ana said after taking a sip of coffee. She was definitely going to need more of that if she wanted to match the Hufflepuff's energy. "You can use hot chocolate too, although I think Professor Kibitzer said that tea leaves are the best for it." Ana glanced back over at Flash and smiled slightly before glancing back at Willow. Her brain was forming short sentences now that were vaguely coherent, which was definitely progress.

After all that had happened that summer, Ana definitely wasn't going to complain about spending time with Flash and Willow. While they all had problems that lurked in the shadows and were certainly not out of sight, having company like this somehow made everything seem far more manageable and bearable.

Willow assured Flash that his clearly off mood wouldn’t go unaddressed. Though it instilled a vague sense of dread in him, knowing he would be utterly unable to explain the problem, he also felt a twinge of relief. It was easy to see why he gravitated towards Willow, she cared so much about him. Even though he wondered about how successful her line of questioning would be, he was glad that he had someone in his life who wanted his happiness. Not that it was a very thankful position to be in, it was debatable even in moments like this, whether Flash was ever working to achieve his own happiness. He always had something he was more concerned about, that demanded his full attention. Poor Willow was left constantly needing to demand that he take care of himself. A hill she would die on, perhaps.

Anastasia was not normally one to gab on and on, in Flash’s experience, but her responses to him that morning were particularly terse. Broken, short sentences. She was reddening, had his touch been a step too far once again? He found that given her acceptance of the gloves, as well as the happiness it seemed to provide, that it wasn’t unwelcome. In fact, a small part of him felt somewhat audacious, wondering how much more he could get away with. He found he quite enjoyed making people swoon, though he felt quite a bit differently about the aftermath. Feelings. If only flirting had no consequences. Still, the thought brought an impudent smile to his face that he only shared with her before leaving to sit.

The two of them hugged after the drinks had been saved from their shaky perches. It wasn’t strange to see Willow hugging people, enough that it didn’t really reveal how well they knew each other at all. The same reaction might have come from intimate friendship as well as a one-time meeting, Willow was so overflowing with love for others that the gift of it was never really gauged. It was more like a fire hydrant, if it was released, it was gushing.

They quickly returned to the topic of the menagerie of drinks at their disposal. Flash sat beside his two cups, the tea he knew he loved, and the advent of coffee. He wasn’t lying when he said he was interested in trying it, the idea that it would give him focus was about to be tested. It was likely to be cooler faster anyway, since she added what looked to be cream in it. The two of them talked about Divination, a class that wasn’t available until third year. It made sense that Willow already knew a bit about it, he knew from talking to her that she had talked to Professor Kibitzer about its similarities with Muggle Magic. Flash had no opinion on the subject, though he wondered if the two intended to try to read their cups once they finished drinking. He had to admit he was a bit curious what the grounds would say. Were either of them actually versed enough in the topic to read them properly?

Flash held it up to his face, considering whether it would burn his tongue or not, when Willow made a remark about how he would probably like it. He looked at her and grinned over his cup.

”I suppose we’ll see how true your predictions are.” He posited a toothless challenge as he took a drink, making a show of it. He twisted his face around like a discerning sommelier. ”Hmm… both bitter and sweet. Acrid and… piquant.”

One of Flash’s hands raised to cover a chuckle at his own appraisal, an enduring reflex despite the present company being the accepting sort. There was some kind of brightening feeling that the coffee gave, he could actually feel like he was waking up.

”You were right, I like it a lot. I might have added less sugar myself.” Flash’s eyes flitted from Willow to Anastasia, wanting to see if her eyes were on him. He liked the way Anastasia looked at him, the way it made him feel. ”Even so, quite lovely. I suppose some extra sweetness won’t hurt.”

Willow was having one of those moments where she was truly overflowing with love for the two of her friends that she was privileged to surround herself with. It was a much different feeling than being home. Even during the summer there weren't friends in Willen that she went to hang out with, no one that was wondering where she had been. Rumor spread themselves especially when you're pulled suddenly out of school despite not having moved anywhere. Her family had always been under the judgement of the town. In times like this at Hogwarts, drinking tea and coffee, she couldn't remember what loneliness felt like. "How would you use hot chocolate though, nothing is left over if you make it right." Willow's nose scrunched up at the thought of some hot chocolate going to waste for telling the future. "Maybe I'll stick to tea leaves then."

As Flash made his way to a bench, Willow made the executive decision to sit in front of it in the grass instead. It would've been extremely difficult to talk as three across one another on the bench, so she brilliantly circumvented the issue altogether. She placed the mugs on either side of her, making sure to know which side was coffee so she could drink that first so as to not be impolite. As Flash really milked the whole, trying coffee thing for the first time she leaned back on her hands. "I don't even know what those words mean." She giggled with him and shook her head. His language was always so eloquent, occasionally Willow struggled to keep up but she didn't exactly mind.

The young badger scrunched up her nose at his want for less sweetness. "Flash, I think you're one of the only kids I know that doesn't have a sweet tooth. I could probably use all of the sugar you'd take out and put it in mine. Do you think there's a spell for that? There seems to be a spell for everything, right?" Surely there was a magic way to make coffee more or less sweet with the wave of a wand. "Maybe you could like- transfigure something into sugar. But would it take on the sweetness properties?" Willow shrugged the thought off and took another sip of the coffee, attempting to hide her scrunched face of disgust behind the mug. "Ana, how's your school year going so far? I feel like I haven't seen you since the lake time."
