CABIN OF THE OCCAMY

The Welcoming Campfire was a welcomed event, in which Leonie Scheinberg tried her best not to speak much at before yelling at the children in her dorm to gather into a group in front of her. She now lead them to the cabin that she had built just the night before, while most people were still packing up or fast asleep.

The Cabin of the Occamy, it was called. A quaint little establishment, although temporary, not too far away from the washrooms or the Great Lake. Leonie had taken to getting a bench to sit on the porch that was in front of the door leading into the cabin. She walked up the steps to the porch, glancing behind her shoulder to make sure that her students were following. Frankly, she wasn't quite aware of who these children were. She was sure she'd probably seen them in classes one or two times - she ought to have, they'd gone through a whole year - but their names didn't quite match up to their faces.

The porch was made of a light wood, something resemblant to oak. It wasn't polished or finished or anything; it was simply an unfinished porch that was good enough for a cabin that they were just camping out in. It wasn't really camping to Leonie - more like glamping. Camping was in tents, in the forest. Not in cabins. She was not too disappointed in it though. Sleeping in a tent was not exactly her style, although there may come a time where she was needed to, unfortunately. The bench in the corner was made of iron, cushions covering the metal seating to attempt to provide more comfortability.

Once she approached the door, she gestured to a small frame next to the doorframe. It was a white piece of paper with scrawly writing on it, easily recognizable as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor's. "These are the rules, if you do not follow them, you sleep on the bench for the night. Alone." She stated. On the paper were four rules, still legible. The students should be able to read it.

"Once you are finished reading the rules and understand them, follow me inside."

And with that, she pulled open the netted door, which was made to keep mosquitoes and other bugs out rather than people, and ventured inside. The inside was probably as quaint as the outside. It was a log cabin after all, so it did have its charm. There were windows on any of the walls, except for the one that lead into Leonie's personal area of the cabin. Three bunks were spread throughout the room, one against each wall. One bunk was on the far wall, right up against the window, another was against the wall that separated the main room from Leonie's. The final bunk was against the other window, opposite to the one against the one against the wall separating Leonie's room from this one.

Each bunk was donned with black blankets. Leonie didn't like colour very much, and has really been living in a lot of black. This was no exception. The duvets, sheets and pillows were black, and there were translucent white silk curtains hanging from each window frame. A large, squared dark green rug was in the center of the room, covering more than half of the flooring. The flooring on the other hand was actually hardwood, a type of redwood.

Against the wall that the door was on was a stone fireplace, wood already inside of it. It had yet to burn, and honestly Leonie doubted that she would light it at all. It was summer, after all, and she doubted anyone would complain about being cold. The door that separated Leonie's room from the other was closed, made of the same type of wood as the flooring. Light poured into the room, it was bright. A light was hanging from the ceiling, though it was not anywhere near as fancy as a  chandelier, it was close enough. For now it was turned off, only natural light illuminating the area.

Leonie stopped near the middle of the room, using the summoning charm without saying it in order to bring a chair into her hand that was sitting near the fire place with three others. She was careful not to let it hit her, then put it behind her, taking a seat as she waited for everyone else. She would at least try to be chipper like some people (looking at you, Cazarez), though she couldn't promise she would be successful at it.

Evelyn was jittery to join the summer camp. Her parents hadn't shown any hesitance to letting her stay, apparently this was something they had done as children as well. She even got to share a cabin with her best friend! There was nothing she could think of needing to do before she claimed a bed so she chose to do so. Strategically she took the bunk furthest from the door and the window. So the one in the middle. Her bags were pushed under the bottom bed were she would be sleeping. There was no need for her to change into anything else to sleep. She'd just take off her sweater and remain in the undershirt and pants.

Even though it was the middle of summer she still wore heavy duty clothing. Evelyn experienced little change in temperature herself so she didn't sweat in the large seaweed green sweater and dark gray exercise pants. Instead she fiddled with the many steel bracelets that clung to her right arm. They didn't jingle or make much noise at all. She doubted that her cabin mates would mind her wearing them.

She perched on her bunk and slid off her thick soled shoes and socks to instead go barefoot. It exposed the faint bite scar just above the ankle but she didn't care much to hide it. Instead she much rathered to stretch out and wait for the others to arrive.

Alaska originally had no intention to stay at Hogwarts over the summer. She was quite eager to go back home being alone again, as she finds isolation a tad more comforting than staying around people. Although she has already spent a year here, she still felt like a stranger. She did meet a few new people, not much, however. It was always her effort to attempt to step outside her comfort zone here, maybe become a changed person, but every time she would always sink back into her shell.

Around a month before summer, Alaska had received an Owl from her mother regarding a Hogwarts summer camp. In it, her mother mentioned: “…I know you miss me, and I miss you very dearly too, but this is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people! I’m sure you’ll have fun. Of course you can come back home if you want, the decision is entirely up to you…” It was no lie that Alaska missed her mother more than anything else. The bigger part of her urged her to just take the Hogwarts Express back to London, and see her mother again. However, there existed a small yen to stay and attend camp. The more she thought about it, the more it called to her. It will probably be more beneficial for her to stay. After all, she attended Hogwarts to change. And there can’t be change without action. It wasn’t an easy decision to reach beyond her comfort zone, but her intent to change compelled her to stay.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Her mind was still uneasy packing up her belongings. Almost everyone else had already left for the Express, which would include her if she had made the decision to go home. She hoped her choice to attend camp was right, no, it was definitely the right choice. No matter how away she felt here, Hogwarts still acted as her second home. Alaska threw in the last of her clothes and automatically, the luggage closed. The luggage’s ability to fit more than it looked still amazes her.

Her outfit was simple. She wore a short-sleeved white v-neck with a picture of a grey striped kitten imprinted in the front. Her denim shorts were a bit too short for her taste, but it didn’t really matter. It was summer after all. She wore a pair of plain black flip-flops, and a few bracelets around her wrist. Her dark brown hair was down as always, however, she thought of tying it up just this once so her neck would stop itching. As she reached the round doorway of the Hufflepuff common room, she turned around and took one last glance at her /home/. Everything was organized down to the millimeter. She knew that a spell did this, and she wished she knew it so she could cast it on her room, which was a mess.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She stood second to last in line. The sky was already becoming dark, but there was still a faint tangy glow from the setting sun. There was just enough natural light emitted to make sure everything was still as clear as daytime. Her cabin was the Cabin of the Occamy. Alaska had not the slightest clue to what an Occamy was, but she admits the name sounded pretty cool. Her natural tendency was to peer around, as was every other young camper would do. There were numerous lines, each with a professor leading them. She directed her attention to the professor leading her group. It was her DADA teacher, Prof. Scheinberg. Over the past year, she mainly sat quiet in class. She always chose a seat near the back, in order to avoid attention. She doubts Professor Scheinberg even recognizes her. Alaska has to confess that Professor Scheinberg scares her just a little. Her skin was porcelain white, and along with her light hair makes Alaska think she might be a ghost with flesh and blood. Besides all that, the professor’s features were quite beautiful, which Alaska sometimes envies.

Taking her attention off the professor, she started looking at the people in her line. She recognized no one from her house except for Evelyn Moore, which she has acquainted to. The fact that she basically knew no-one startled her a bit, but that feeling quickly faded away as she thought about all the new friends she could make.

They approached their cabin. There was a banner in front that showed an image of a shining bird-serpent? Perhaps thats what an Occamy is. The professor stopped before a small frame next to the doorway.

“These are the rules, if you do not follow them, you sleep on the bench for the night. Alone." The professor stated. A shiver went down her spine as she quickly scurried towards the frame along with all the others. The rules were fairly straight forward and Alaska believes they are quite easy to follow…if people weren’t troublemakers. After she finished reading, she followed the others into the brightly lit cabin room. She stood wide-eyed as she entered, confused as well. The interior seemed 10 times larger than what the cabin looked from the outside. Magic really has no limits!

She saw everyone else making their way to bunks so naturally, she followed them. She chose the bunk in the far right corner. No one has claimed it yet, and as it was a bit further away from the other bunks, it was perfect.

Luna was filled with an anxious energy. She had successfully signed up for a cabin that both contained her favorite Professor and her best friend. And to make things even better she didn't have to wear her school robes that tripped her up so much.  She had instead chosen a white ruffled top with stunted sleeves matched with a blue triple layered skirt and black leggings underneath. She was also sporting black hiking boots, all gifts from her sponsor. Of course, Luna had spare outfits she had brought with her for the summer.

She had followed Professor Scheinberg into the cabin, quickly memorizing the rules posted on the doorframe. She may admire the professor, but she had no intention of crossing her. Looking around the cabin, Luna silently despaired at the amount of black present. It made everything a bit more dark than she had hoped for summer. But she quickly pushed that from her mind when she noticed Eevee sitting on the bottom bunk of the middle bed. Luna lit up upon seeing her and moved to the nearest bed with a bottom bunk, her boots clacking on the hardwood floor, and sat on the mattress. Luna would've shared with Eevee if not for her fear of heights. She wanted no part of any top bunk.

Luna neatly stuffed her bag away, which was simple as she only had one. Her mind was focused on what all she would learn in camp. That's what camps are for, right? She had a feeling that with Eevee along for the ride, this would be a great summer. Idly she wondered who else had joined them in the cabin.

Hengist wasn't exceptionally thrilled to be here. Not that he didn't like his cabin mates, honestly he barely knew any of them. Oh, he had seen a few of them, like his fellow Ravenclaws Luna and Kaegen, around the castle. However, he'd barely spoken to any of them, except maybe in passing. Really, the only reason he decided to apply was because his parents convinced him in an owl after they were informed of the summer camp. Hengist respected his parents and knew they meant the best for him, rubbing the scar on his hand, so he complied.

The main problem was that he did not bring any other clothes besides his robes to Hogwarts, with the exception of a suit that he wore on the train ride and his sleeping clothes, and he certainly wasn't going to wear either of those. He wasn't expecting to need any other clothes, knowing first years aren't allowed off the grounds. He simply just wore his collared shirt and pants, rolling up his sleeves. Besides, his parents promised to send him a parcel of some summer clothes to wear, so he could deal with it for the time being.

After being informed by Prof. Scheinberg of the rules, and to follow them lest they sleep on the bench, the students were let in. Hengist noticed the black motif, which was fine with him. He was never big on personal decoration. He saw two of the girls, the Ravenclaw Luna and the Hufflepuff Evelyn quickly bunk together. He then noticed another Hufflepuff girl, he believed her name was Alaska, take a bunk by herself, looking like she wanted solitude. Hengist respected this look by taking the top of the last unoccupied bunk. He climbed into his bunk with a book to pass the time before the rest of the students arrived.

Kalani looked up at the Cabin of the Occamy, face a mixture of anger and despair and her hands balled into tight fists by her sides. Her eyes squinted and her cheeks puffed up as she struggled with the injustice of her situation. Kalani didn't want to be at Hogwarts Summer Camp. She had her own summer camp: Maika'i Summer Camp for Disabled Children. Thousands of miles away, her best friends raced on wheelchairs and described the sounds of feet on sandy beaches and painted pictures of the sky in braille and they were doing it all without her, and they'd be doing it all without her from now on because she was never going back. As long as it cost so much to fly back to Hawaii, and as long as the tuition kept rising and rising, she would never return to the best place in the world, her second home. Thinking about it made her face flush in anger and her throat tighten up, so she tried not to.

She was angry about that, but that wasn't all to it. She wasn't going to admit it, not while she was still mad at them, but she had been looking forward to seeing her parents. She missed her mom's long thick hair, just begging to be braided, and her dad's massive bone white teeth, just begging to be made fun of. She missed her dad cutting her hair to lengths that made her mom almost fade away and her mom bringing home leftovers from the café that were so greasy they made her dad sick. But mostly, she missed being understood. She missed being able to openly talk, and have her parents understand immediately and reply. She didn't like playing charades, writing down everything that she wanted to say just to have a conversation. It was exhausting. Now, with things in the delicate balance, no one could say for sure when she would next see her mom and dad. That, too, brought her dangerously close to the edge of tears, so she blinked until the water hid back into her eyes and was replaced with the indignation flickering beneath.

She dragged her feet into the cabin, only glancing at Leonie once or twice and thus missing a lot of what she said - on purpose. It wasn't that she didn't like Leonie, it was just that she was the closest authority figure that she could minorly disrespect in her most favourite way. She'd briefly glanced over the rules as she'd come in, and they were fine. Nothing difficult. Looking around the cabin, she noted that she was the only Gryffindor. There was one girl she knew, Evelyn, who had helped her out with some transfiguration studying. But in her sulky state, she didn’t feel like being chatty. Not like she could be anyway. She instead crossed the room to a quiet looking boy, who she vaguely recognised from a couple classes. She reached up on her tip toes and tapped his arm. She quickly flashed her bracelets, not feeling like explaining them too much, then pointed to the empty bottom bunk. Her face was relatively expressionless, but her thick brows still showed a fair kind of moodiness. With her spare hand, she tugged on one of her two bunches, tied up with bright red ball bobbles. They made her look younger than she already did from her shorter height.

This place was a shelter with beds, but it was by no means sheltering. The professor was untrustworthy and odd, the students were mysterious and unknown. They didn’t register anywhere on the threat scale, which meant that he didn’t know how powerful, how dangerous they were. He would have to make sure not to fall asleep while they were around. Napping during the day was always an option, assuming he could find a hiding place.

He had a lair, after all. It was possible for him to hide there until he got enough rest. He could spend his nights practicing those spells he should have already mastered. As difficult as it was to admit, he wasn’t going anywhere quickly. He hadn’t even mastered flippendo yet. Sure he could cast it, but that was as far it went. He didn’t have mastery over it.

And so he would train, he would study and learn for as long as it took, forsaking sleep and rest. His body harshly disagreed with this training schedule, and showed it’s disapproval in the form of dark shadows underneath his eyes, drooping eyelids that tried to cover the eyes that still glared sharp and alert, a direct contrast with the rest of his face.

If he was a little more self aware it would be easy to put two and two together, to realize that an exhausted brain learned slower, that cramming endlessly only slowed his learning. But the 11 year old only pushed harder, working until he couldn’t keep his eyes open, and then cursing himself when he finally opened them again, realizing that it was morning and he had classes to attend to.

THIS IS ASSUMING SHE WAS TALKING TO SOMEONE ELSE, AND NOT KAEGEN.
The boy walked over to one of his beds, and gently sat down, scooting all the way back until his back leaned against the wall. He laid his walking umbrella across his knees, sitting criss cross. He would wait until they went to sleep, and then leave. He could find somewhere outside to sleep, somewhere safer.

THIS PART IS ASSUMING THAT KALANI WAS REFERRING TO THIS QUIET BOY. IF IT WAS SOMEONE ELSE, IGNORE THIS PART.
One of the girls walked over to him and tapped his arm. Kaegen shrank back, faster than a normal 11 year old should have. Faster than a normal 11 year old could have. As he flinched back, he turned to face her. She was pointing at a bed, no expression on her face. The expressionlessness didn’t bother him. He couldn’t read faces well anyway, she could have had her face twisted into a grimace and it still would have given him only minimal information.

He stared back blankly, expressionless face matching expressionless face. He had no idea what she wanted, if she was indicating that the bed was his, or if she was claiming it for herself. Why couldn’t she just use clearer charades, or maybe speak with words.

Everyone had finally come in and taken a seat on a bunk somewhere, or were standing around. Regardless they were all in the same room, and Leonie had a way of grabbing and holding attention. She stood around for a few moments, observing actions. One kid went as far as taking out a book, causing Leonie to roll her eyes slightly. She would bet money on him being a Ravenclaw. Another girl went up to a boy and pointed to a bunk, and two other girls took up bunks, one going right ahead and taking off both her shoes and her socks. At least she was making herself at home.

"Okay, everyone!" She abruptly said, very loudly. "This is your cabin for the next month. You will stay as a group, move as a group. You will go through activities that may require teamwork or otherwise. Get to know each other well. You will be getting up at six every morning, and going to breakfast for eight. Comprehend?" She asked, narrowly eyeing each of the students singularly. Hopefully, they were smart enough to pick up on what she was saying. Otherwise, she would be more or less disappointed.

Leonie had her arms crossed over her chest as she spoke, leaning in to her left hip. Although her posture may be somewhat casual-looking, she still put on her best intimidation face. She doubted anyone would argue if they had no nerve to. Her lips had pulled down into a slight frown, though her eyebrows remained at rest. She waited for some kind of response, though if she got none she would most likely return to her own room to sleep.

The rest of the students arrived as Hengist read his book. One student, a black haired girl that he didn't recognize, tapped his shoulder and pointed at her bracelets. He was able to read the one that said "I AM DEAF" as she then pointed at the bunk below. Hengist understood her meaning and gave a small smile and nod and returned to his book. He had never interacted with a deaf person before. This would either be very embarrassing for himself, or the more likely outcome of him just not interacting with her out of fear of said embarrassment. Although he felt a small twinge of homesickness for his sister, who had, what he considers, a relatable condition...in the wizarding world, at least.

Now that all the students had arrived and chosen a bunk, Prof. Scheinberg started speaking. Loudly.
"Okay, everyone! This is your cabin for the next month. You will stay as a group, move as a group. You will go through activities that may require teamwork or otherwise. Get to know each other well. You will be getting up at six every morning, and going to breakfast for eight. Comprehend?"
As soon as he heard the quite loud "Okay, everyone!", Hengist immediately closed his book and sat up to listen. Luckily he remembered what page he was on or else he would've lost his place. Six seemed a bit early to him as he was used to waking around 7ish, but he could deal with it for the month. He then wondered what she meant by 'activities requiring teamwork'.

This worried Hengist slightly. He hadn't made too many friends over the school year and none of them were in this cabin with him. He vaguely recognized one or two Ravenclaws that he'd seen in class and in the common room, but he hadn't really spoken to them yet. He knew none of the other students. Still, he had to try to break out of his shell eventually. Maybe this would be the summer for it to happen? Hengist wasn't sure, but he wasn't betting on it. After giving the Professor a nod that he understood her rules, he went back to his book to read.

"Comprehend?" Professor Scheinberg asked as she narrowed her eyes to look at every student. Alaska shuddered the moment the professor's eyes reached her. She was frightening indeed, probably even more so than during her Defense Against the Dark Arts lessons. Alaska managed only a timid nod from her head to show that she understood the professor. She could only hope she gets on the professor's good side, if she had one. For one, she never seemed to smile. And two, her intimidating gaze sends chills down Alaska's spine.

It was getting pretty late, and Alaska was exhausted from the bonfire, not that she did anything physically demanding. Although she sunk back into her shell of seclusion, she was grateful to meet two new people; Amanda & Anastasia.

Her clothes were dirty from the smoke of the campfire, and Alaska needed to go wash up before heading to sleep. She jumped off her bed rather gracefully and dragged her luggage out from under the bed. With a simple flick from her wand, the suitcase popped open revealing all of Alaska's belongings. Kneeling down, Alaska began digging in, looking for her white and blue striped pajamas and toothbrush. Having found the things she was looking for, she quickly got up and made her way towards to door. Right as she placed her hand on the handle, Professor Scheinberg's face appeared in her mind.
"These are the rules, if you do not follow them, you sleep on the bench for the night. Alone."
The words Professor Scheinberg said earlier echoed in her mind.

Thats right! I almost forgot. Alaska huffed a sigh of relief as she remembered the rules professor made them follow before entering the cabin. She needed to have a partner before going to the washroom. Turning around, she started looking for anyone that looked like they were preparing to go to the washroom.
