Zayn Al-Ashmuni was born on March 13, 2015 in London, a scion of the Al-Ashmuni family which immigrated from Egypt to the UK in 1919. The eldest of four children, he was raised in the district of Bloomsbury where the family maintained a Fidelius-charmed townhouse as their primary residence. With his parents and grandparents all active in academia, his early childhood was spent surrounded by old books, maps, and antiquities. His grandfather would often recount old stories from when the family lived in Egypt. This upbringing led to an affinity for history and archaeology, primarily with topics related to egyptology with which he feels a personal connection. As a child he was focused and had a curious mind, excelling in his home studies with the family’s tutor.
Outside of his studies, Zayn enjoyed exploring the countryside and going on small adventures around Mould-on-the-Wold where his family maintained a vacation cottage and would visit a few times a month. He had friends from other wizarding families and was fairly outgoing and gregarious. He had a natural gravitas that attracted others into his group. He greatly enjoyed playing games of chance like exploding snap, as well as other card games.
Zayn was close with his family, including his younger siblings, to whom he was something of a role model and protector. Unlike many older British Pure-blood families, the Al-Ashmunis held no ideology of blood supremacy. Their Pure-blood status was a matter of lineage rather than principle as the family placed greater value on preserving magical talent and tradition than on any notion of superiority over Muggles or Muggle-borns.

Zayn's first instance of magic occurred when he was 9 years old while the family was on holiday in Mould-on-the-Wold. Zayn, along with his younger siblings, were walking through a dense copse of ancient trees when one of the branches broke free from a gust of wind. He could hear the branch break and watched helplessly as it fell directly down towards one of his siblings. Too far to physically help, he began to panic and shouted for her move but he knew it would be too late. Except, rather than hit his sister, the branch instead burst into splinters a meter above her head and flew harmlessly to the side of the trail. Both Zayn and his siblings were frozen in shock, amazed at what the young boy had just unintentionally done. They soon recovered, however, and ran back to the cottage to tell their parents the good news.

Zayn is an extrovert and comfortable being the center of attention in groups but does not typically share his inner thoughts even to those he is close with. However, he is loyal and protective of those he trusts. For his age, he is perceptive and has an innate ability to read people but can be overconfident in his abilities. He struggles in uncontrolled situations, preferring predictability over chaos and, at times, can be quite prideful.

The Al-Ashmuni family originated near the modern town of El Ashmunein in Middle Egypt before emigrating to Britain in 1919 following the Egyptian Revolution. Family chronicles claim the family resided in the magically potent region since the times of Classical Antiquity where a city called Khemenu (later Hermopolis), once existed. The city served as a major cult center dedicated to the Egyptian god of wisdom and magic, Thoth. It was there that the Al-Ashmunis can trace their magical lineage as temple priests and court officials. Members of the family held the title sesh per-ankh, meaning scribes of the house of life, a temple rank concerned with the keeping of dangerous knowledge rather than the revelation of it. However, a second and rarer title, djeser-maau, meaning sacred seer, also appeared in family chronicles and was reserved for those born with the gift of Sight. The last recorded djeser-maau in the Al-Ashmuni family died over a millennia ago and the gift was thought lost. It was not until a recent union with another magical family that the recessive gene was able to resurface in Zayn.
As an 11 year old wizard, Zayn does not yet have visions. Instead he has brief flashes of intuition that exhibit themselves at random times. He does not see these things as an explicit talent or skill, but rather just coincidence or intelligence. For example, he might answer a question before a person finishes the question or open a door just before a visitor knocks on it. Once, he even grabbed a hot cup of tea just before it was to fall on his sleeping grandfather. Even his family, which includes talented witches and wizards, do not see these acts as anything more than the actions of a perceptive child with a seemingly quick mind. This has, for better or worse, given Zayn a bit of a chip on his shoulder and translated into overconfidence at times. Such flashes of intuition, of course, do not happen on demand which has led to more than one uncomfortable situation in which he assumed he knew what would happen but it turned out to be the opposite. This assumption will likely lead to more embarrassing situations for the young wizard in the future, until he realizes what he is.
As neither Zayn nor his family are aware of nor have any expectation of having a Seer in the family, the slow revelation of this gift will be an interesting plot to explore. Until the more visible changes begin to take place (like changing of the eyes and hair), Zayn will largely be left on his own to discover and realize that he has the gift of Sight over the years. While he might ask for advice from professors or fellow students, he is fairly stubborn and self-motivated so will probably embark on a process of self-discovery to avoid any potential embarrassment from his peers. He might assume it is some magical malady rather than a rare gift, or the effects of some artifact or spell, and not want his classmates to think he is tainted or contagious.
