Nico Dawson | First Year, Gryffindor

| x | Nico’s family is pretty average all things considered. Rachel and Phillip married fairly young, settling in a modest flat on the outskirts of Norwich, where one late winter, their child was born. Ever since they were little, strange things happened around Nico, but their parents pinned them to the little one being slightly unlucky. Regardless, the Dawson’s home was a place full of warmth and laughter, so Nico grew to be just the same. Always making sure everyone around is smiling, just like they were used to. They inherited their parent’s love of jokes and pranks, and so they used their natural sneakiness and dexterousness for such; never for nefarious purposes, unless you count sneaking an extra candy or two from the kitchen. Strangers would seldom face this side of Nico - in fact they wouldn’t face them at all, as whenever Rachel and Phillip invited their friends over, Nico would hide behind their father’s legs. And so, adults would praise and envy the Dawsons for having such a well behaved child. Their mom would laugh and respond You should see them with their cousin! It was true that whenever they visited Rachel’s sister, things would get a bit more chaotic. Her daughter Sam was way more adventurous, and Nico would instantly match her enthusiasm, getting pulled into whatever ideas she had, whether it was sneaking out of the garden, exploring wild beaches or the small groves nearby. Even though she was a couple years older, they were practically inseparable despite the half hour drive. Nico had nothing but pure admiration for her - she was just so cool. No matter what she did, whether it was guitar, skateboarding or drawing, she made it look so effortless. Nico often tried to imitate her, but for some reason it never worked quite as well. Drawings were clumsy, guitar too big, not to mention the Incident after which Nico was banned from going within five meters of a skateboard. Despite that, Sam always treated them kindly, cheering them up and looking for different things they could do together. To avoid bruised knees and hurting fingers they stuck to safer activities, and ended up bonding over music, mainly older rock bands, some of which Sam’s mom even had vinyls of. Nico’s admiration of Sam was a double edged sword and introduced some doubt into them. What if they’re not good enough? It’s always her showing Nico cool things and never the other way around. They needed to be the one impressing her for once. So what’s better than everyone’s beloved magic tricks! Nico asked their parents to get them a book of magic tricks. They complied, but they didn’t anticipate that it would mark the day their lives got a lot more difficult. Nico would now run around the house leaving cards on every surface, pulling handkerchiefs from god-knows-where, and dragging them away from their work to showcase what they just learned. At least their plan worked - weeks of preparation led to a great time spent at Sam’s house, with a different trick to show her every day. That was all Nico wished for - the sight of her eyes sparkling with amazement and her excitedly bothering them to explain how the illusion worked. They wanted to experience it over and over again. It ended up becoming Nico’s favourite interest, so much so they started showing off in school, whether on breaks or in talent shows. People were in fact amazed, but after the show was over, everyone left. No one lingered to talk with them more, despite their best efforts. They persisted, chatted, came up to people, and yet they were unable to make any true friends besides Sam. That didn’t bother them though, for Nico was far too cheerful to have something like that kill their mood. They had a loving family, and that was enough. |

| x | Nico is prone to getting frustrated when things don't go their way. As it was when during a hot summer's day, they sat on the porch of their aunt's house with some chilled drinks, prepared for a long afternoon of learning how to play the guitar. Nico borrowed the instrument from Sam, which in the end was a mistake. She was older, her fingers longer, so Nico's little eight year old hands were simply too small to reach all the strings. Increasingly annoyed, their fingertips in pain, Nico could feel the tears of anger forming. After misplaying the same chord yet another time they were about to snap, but instead they noticed something strange. One of the unopened sodas started trembling, before flying up a few feet and bursting open, sugary liquid spraying everywhere. Nico shouted and tried to grab it, but when they reached out, it fell on the ground like any regular bottle. Sam, hearing the scream, rushed in to see Nico who was scared, confused and drenched. They tried to explain how the soda flew up first, but unsurprisingly, no one believed them. They were told that surely the pressure inside made it pop, but Nico did not buy it. From then on, they made sure to take a mental note of any unusual things happening around them, hoping to one day convince Sam that what they saw was real. |

Rachel Dawson:
Nico’s mother. Grew up in a small town near the shore along with her sister. The sea reflects in her intensely blue eyes, being a part of her wherever she ventures. She decided living closer to a city is more convenient, but she holds her family close, so she makes sure they visit each other often.
She met Phillip in college, but started out pretty disinterested, however she found his great efforts to get her attention cute. She currently works as an accountant.
Note: Has an unapologetic and deadpan sense of humour, which her husband adores, but sometimes has to hold her back.
Honey, please refrain from calling our child “The Spawn”, people will give us looks.
Phillip Dawson:
Nico’s father. An only child, born in Norwich. His eye-catching wavy black hair is a sign of his southern-european roots. Works in the IT department of a pretty small company. He enjoys cooking, so is usually the one to do so, as well as any chores Rachel requests. He filled up the house with plants and cares for them dearly, almost as much as for his family.
Note: While openly saying he loves his wife the most in the world, he will compromise for Nico’s sake. The more lenient parent.

Nico’s cousin. With her golden blonde hair, bright brown eyes and flawless grades, she could be a picture perfect student, but such an image never suited her taste. Her voluminous hair cut into messy layers, playing with eyeliner as soon as she got the chance to, wardrobe consisting of clothes black and purple, that’s the style Sam is all about.
Maybe because of her alternative looks, or her occasionally sharp tongue, or even her good grades, she was never able to make many friends at school. Without siblings either, it’s natural that she grew really close with Nico, whom she cares about dearly. Filled with a sense of responsibility as the older one, she always made sure to set a good example, but not without infecting them with her music taste and style.
Note: She doesn’t like her hair colour and wants to dye it as soon as possible. So far she only compromised coloured streaks, as her mother said she may dye her hair when she’s fifteen. Nico wishes to do the same.
Madeline Rodgers:
Also known as Aunt Maddie. At first glance her short, light brown hair looks much different than her blonde sisters, but they share the same blue eyes. Working as an English teacher, she writes short stories on the side, but despite her husband’s encouragement doesn’t want that to be her full time job. She dotes on Sam and treats Nico like her own child.
Note: There are a lot of images of her in heavy makeup and dyed hair from her teen years, but these days she doesn’t like showing them.
Sammy really takes after me...
William Rodgers:
Uncle William. Tall, strong, hair cut short and elegantly styled, most often wears dress shirts. That, with his stoic being and an expression akin to a military officer, makes for an intimidating image. Well educated and intelligent businessman, he holds a high spot in a law firm. Despite his frightening looks, he’s a caring family man.
Note: He was the one to pick his daughter’s name, and deep down is sad that she doesn’t like it.
