Roger has become a very supportive part of Maximus's life and hobbies often finding copies of Muggle sheet music for him to learn.
Maximus was born and raised on the outskirts of Rye England. He spent alot of time exploring wooded areas for his beloved birds and nice areas to practice his music. One fateful day during a particular good jam session he notices a small sleak black raven observing him. After a few other encounters, this little beautiful fellow became Maximus's new cherished friend and pet. Taking inspiration from one of his mother's muggle history books the raven became known as Loki. A fitting name because Loki was mischievous creature always taking any shiney interesting object he could find. Sadly for the pair Maximus's parents decided Loki would not be attending Hogwarts with him.
First Instance of Magic:
At the age of 5 a very determined young Maximus executed a masterful jailbreak from his distracted mother. Making his way down to a nearby wooded area an unknown beautiful bird drew his attention. After multiple attempts to coax the bird closer the frustrated boy climbed up for a closer look. Half way up a branch snaps and down comes poor Maximus but instead of crashing down painfully the boy hovered feet from ground. This random act of levitation saved our little hero and was his first magic feat.

The Boy, the Bird and the Bond
"Don't be out too long, once I finish this next chapter I'll be making dinner. Your father is supposed be home on time for once" Exclaimed Lilliana Thorne from her office/library.
"Yeah ok mom" Max replied as he finished loading up the satchel.
He knew two things about that statement. First the next chapter would not be finished anytime soon, his mother was a perfectionist when it came to her writing and wouldn't let any small flaw pass. Second his father would be late just like he had been the last few weeks. Grayson Thorne the well renowned enchanter was in high demand and the current project the company he worked for was doing was quite extensive. The satchel Max was putting his things in now was one of his father's magically enhanced items. Along with some snacks and books of sheet music, Max was able to fit his trusty guitar. The extension charms his father could place on an item, was brilliant.
"I'm off now, mom" Max shouted as he exited the house. The mid August heat was nearly overwhelming. "Ugh" groaned Max.
Not a fan of the heat the temptation to turn around and lounge in his nice cool room was a brief consideration. I'll bear it he thought as he walked along. The sleeveless tan shirt and gray cargo shorts were a good call today.
Max had a nice little hike ahead to his destination. He was off to find a new territory to claim as his sanctuary. He called it a sanctuary but it was really just a place no body went preferably wooded with lots of wildlife and far enough away where his guitar practice wouldn't be heard. His previous little wooded paradise was over taking by some muggle teens. Max had no ill feelings toward muggles he just wasn't a social person, plus some questions about himself would be hard to answer. Better just to avoid it all together was Max's believe.
A solid 45 min in this scorching days journey a nice sized wooded lot came into view. Max fimilar with the area near the place he lived his whole life had known this lot was here. The slightly creepy vibe the place gave off had kept most of the areas kids away, even the curious Max.
"HMMMM" Max contemplated.
Leary of the idea Max knew this might be his best option. Cmon I can't be timid now. I'll be going to Hogwarts in a year, what kind of wizard would let a little unease stop him. Max thought trying to get over his nerves.
"To the victor goes the spoils" Max declared as he trudged toward an overgrown path. A few steps in to this shady woods the relieve of being out the suns torturing glare was apparent. Wiping his sweaty hair from his brow not knowing exactly which direction to look in, for a cozy spot to set himself up. This place was pretty quiet he thought. Then he heard something, it was the thing that he loved as much as the sound of his guitar. Birds chirping and singing it was a little deeper in but it was exactly where he woul be heading.
"Wow what is this" Max said in a tone of wonder. After following the bird songs for a few minutes Max toped a small hill and seen a pond. Around the little pond of clear water he spotted a few nice sized rocks, a handful of fallen trees and beautiful wild flowers. What grabbed his attention most was the birds. Tons of em different species with a variety of colors. Slowly making his way foward taking it all in he knew it already, this place is perfect.
Finally standing beside the clear water Max kneeled down to test the temperature. It was cold and without another thought he begin to scoop water over his head and face. A satisfied groan left his lips, he had been roasting and felt sweaty all over. Cooled and refreshed Max inspected his surroundings closer he spotted a waist tall rock with a wide flat top. It was about ten steps or so from the pond and the amount of light that flowed in thru trees canopy was just right. After clearing dirt and debris off the rock Max sat down. A little hard and warm on his backside but not bad. For the better part of an hour he just quietly enjoyed the scenery. Picking up the satchel Max removed a ceral bar, a container of grape juice and most importantly his guitar.
After a snack and finishing his drink, Max inspected the instrument. A light brown wood grain with multiple drawings Max had added with over time. Mostly birds and owls he had seen.
What else would it be, he maybe obsessed a little but didn't everyone have things they loved. A slight frown crossed his face taken in the wear and tear. He had gotten it when he was 8 after days of annoying his parents. Many hours spent teaching himself to play from some books on the subject. Sad to say it would need replaced before long. With that thought he began to play. For a few hours he lost himself in the music. Wishing he could play into the night he knew it was time to head home. And with that he left vowing to return the next day.
Four days later on another scorching afternoon. Max perched on his favorite rock finished the song he had been practicing. It had been tough to get it right but he finally nailed it. Smiling with pride he placed his guitar down and drank from a canteen. It was time for a well earned snack, after rummaging he pulled out an apple and a bag of grapes from his satchel. Enjoying his victory meal Max observed his feathered neighbors. The birds loved it here as did Max, they didn't seemed to bothered by his presence and noise. Be it his nature, pure love or some cosmic force the boy and beasts had some connection. Even his father's grumpy old owl Sherman allowed to him stroke his head.
Content with his belly attended to and his thirst quenched, Max picked up the guitar. Just strumming one of his favorites he seen some movement a few feet away up in the nearest tree. Without pause he kept playing while glancing to see what was there. A young sleek black raven had apparently became curious enough to get a closer look at him. While others maybe drawn to the more colorful or exotic species not Max. Ravens were his favorite, he knew the intelligence of these guys well. Books were a large part of his life his mother made sure of that. As part of his studies under her supervision essays were a common nuisance. Making the most,he studied things that interested him for topics. Ravens could mimic human speech similar to parrots. A talking Raven fimilar was a dream he had for years.
For another two hours Max plucked away on his guitar. All awhile he and the little raven observed each other. Smiling to himself as he finished one last song. It was time to head home so he started to pack up. Max turned when the raven started cawling loudly as if asking for more.
"Sorry buddy it's almost supper. Wouldn't miss moms fish and chips for anything. Be back tomorrow though maybe you can do some vocals" Max joked as he made way to leave.
For the next few weeks things continued like this. Max made the trek to his sanctuary almost everyday and everyday Max showed up so did the little raven. Max would play the bird would watch. On days he left early the bird would squawk in protest. Max always talked to the bird on breaks and said his goodbyes when he left. Max wondered how the bird viewed him, as a friend or entertainment. Not sure, all he knew is the raven was getting closer to him every day. He even started to land on the rock next to the boy during breaks. Now was one of these instances having finished his snack, he spent a moment admiring this curious creature.
"Your a beautiful fellow you know? We should be friends. You could come home with me if you'd like."
Max offered the little raven with a smile. The bird in turn looked at Max cocked his head to the side and let a soft warble. Then spread his wings and flew up to his normal spot in the branch of the closet tree. Max chuckled and shook his head was that a maybe. Anyway time to get back to it, grabbing his guitar he began to play.
Losing himself playing one song followed by another time passed by with out his notice. Stopping to get a much need stretch and rest his fingers that were beginning to feel sore. Huh something felt off looking around Max noticed it was alot shadier. Glancing to the sky thru the canopy of leaves and branches Max was horrified to realize it was already evening and getting dark quick.
"Oh no I'm way late, probably missed dinner already. Moms going to be livid" Max groaned as he jumped to his feet and hurriedly gathered his stuff into the satchel. Cursing to himself as he turned to leave. Looking to say bye to the little bird he noticed it was nowhere to be seen. That's odd but I got no time. He began to jog up the path he had worn in during his many visits.
Finally he was out the woods on the street heading home. While not as dark in the open the light was fading fast. With his fast pace and mind racing for an excuse to save himself from Lillianas anger. He didn't notice the danger he was approaching. As he began to duck down an offroad short cut through an overgrown lot. A growl and a lunging shadow shot out in front of him. The sudden surprise of the ambush threw Max of balance, rolling his ankle he crashed to the ground. Ignoring the pain that was shooting thru his ankle he got a good look at the attacker. A big dark mangy dog with his teeth bared and slobber dripping as he let out another angry growl. Oh no Max panicked trying to push himself further back.
"Ah good boy its ok, please don't bite me. I'm a friend" Max pleaded but the dog was not having it. Dang it now what Max thought, I'm in trouble. The dog took another menacing step foward. Max trying to brace himself for what would happen next closed his eyes.
"SOMEBODY HELP, ANYBODY HELP" Max begged aware nobody was around. What else could he do? The dog prepared to pounce. Out of nowhere an angry sqwack and a black blur dived at the dog face. Hearing the commotion Max opened his eyes as the dog let out quick whimper. Max instantly recognized the blur was the little raven from the pond. Seeing the dog recover from the surprise and was now infuriated. Snaping at the bird who was just out of reach, Max now feared for the brave little guy.
"No get away" Max choked out now in pain and panicked he tried to get back to his feet. The bird flying close making a fuss to deter the dog to no avail. After a close call the bird let out the loudest sqwack Max had ever heard. Max didnt know what to do, the dog was not giving up, and the brave raven was no match. Fearing this would all end in tragedy Max never could've guessed what happened next.
Wether it was a miracle, the Ravens sqwack, or unintentionally act of magic Max wasn't sure. At that instant the area was flooded with the noise of angry sounding squawking, and wings beating. More ravens than he could count were upon the dog now chasing it away. Max never seen anything like this, an unkindness is what they call a flock of ravens. This amazing sight lived up to that name. Completely dumbfounded he sat mouth open in awl. It was a surprise when he felt something on his shoulder. A soft warble in his ear and he know it was his little protector.
"Th..th thanks bud" Max choked out "you saved me. That guy was bad news"
A few days later Max awoke with a groan. It wasn't a groan of pain having his ankle healed that night when he got home. It was a groan of knowing he had a day of chores ahead. He had been severely chewed out and grounded upon limping thru the front door. On the bright side he was allowed to keep his new friend. He looked over to cage by the window and perched asleep still was the little raven. Max had named him Loki, a name he had gotten from a book he had read from his mother's muggle collection. The boy got up and dressed, before going to the cage.
"Wake up Loki, we got chores then we can start training. One day you'll talk like the videos uncle Rog showed me, I know it!!" Max said with a confident smile. A moment later as he walked thru the door Loki was on his shoulder squawking about breakfast.
"Don't be out too long, once I finish this next chapter I'll be making dinner. Your father is supposed be home on time for once" Exclaimed Lilliana Thorne from her office/library.

Taking her home
Approximately 2 weeks before the start of the new school year.
"Umm umm" Max coughed litely and brushed soot from his clothes. Deciding on a dark t-shirt and jeans was prolly good idea. Max didnt dislike traveling by the floo network, but the soot would always make him cough and get on his hair and clothes.
"C'mon Max we got alot to do today" said his mother as she briskly turned and walked away.
That we do thought Max. It had been awhile since he had his last trip to Diagon Alley. Having been dragged along many times by his mother and aunt, this time was different. It was time to get his school things, his Hogwarts adventure was weeks away now.
After getting his wand, potion supplies and fitted for his robes. His mother decided to do some shopping of her own leaving Max to go off on his own. With a time set to meet up to get his textbooks later the boy excitedly wandering the area. After a stop by the ice cream shop, Max enjoyed his treat. Eating his cone while observing all the commotion. Kids his age with their families going shop to shop, older kids meeting friends they hadn't seen all summer catching up.
Seeing a group of kids roughly his age outside a shop window excitedly carrying on, Max knew immediately the latest broom model was on display. He looked forward to flying lessons but the shop he was excitedly headed towards had nothing to do with quiditch.
"Here we are" Max said to himself as he walked inside. The noise and smells of a variety of animals was apparent as soon as you entered. Cats, dogs, rats and frogs this place had quite the selection of companions. Max was beside himself in glee he had to visit em all. After geting his fill of playing with the kittens he moved on to his favorite section, the owls.
"My aren't you all some beauty's" Max whispered as he took em all in. This part of the noisy little shop seemed slightly quieter and darker. Max couldn't help but inspect them one by one.
A soft voice from behind spoke slightly startling him. " The owls are my favorite. Their beauty, intelligence, independence and just usefulness set them apart from. Cats are wonderful also but owls for me. Hehehe" Chuckled the little old shop keeper.
"I've got a raven, but he still too mischievous to take to Hogwarts" Max said sadly.
"Yeah the curiosity of a raven could lead you to some bad situations. Sorry to hear you'll have to be separated" The old man replied understanding.
At this point Max stopped in front of a young great horned owl. The brown and black on his feathers with a little bit of white on its chest made it stand out from the others. Max was instantly drawn to the creature and couldn't take his eyes off the little beauty.
"Oh she is a beauty, we got her from a different breeder than the others. Shes been here for a few weeks, and as pretty as she is, she hasn't exactly warmed up to anyone yet" The little old man said as he stroked a nearby snowy white owl gently.
"Is that so?" Max replied without looking away. "How bout being my friend little one? I'm sure we could be good friends what do you say?"
The owl in return opened its eyes staring at the boy, cocked it's head and let out a soft hoot. Max moved foward slowly and gently reached out his hand to stroke the bird. As the old man watched sighed and closed his eyes waiting for the boy to get bitten. The sound of pain never came instead a quiet noise of content came from the owl.
"Well I'll be......" The shopkeeper was slightly surprised by the ease the boy and owl were interacting. "I thought she'd need some work, I've got the bad end of her bite myself and I've been doing this for years."
Another more feminine sigh could be heard behind Max. "I should have known you'd lose track of time and be here." Lilliana, Max's mother entered, while not mad she knew the coming conversation. " Before you ask, fine you pay for it and take care of it. An owl would be welcomed at Hogwarts, a little theif raven is just asking for problems. Now hurry up, we got books to buy yet"
The boy was happy as ever as he looked from his mother back to the owl. Lifting his arm flat in front of him he asked the owl. "So what will you do? Stay in this shop or come adventure with me? I got a raven friend Loki, I'm sure you'll get along. Shall we go?"
The owl didn't take but a moment to decide and landing on the boys arm with a hoot. With a grin the boy turned to the shopkeeper. "I'll be needing to check out now, sir."
It was now a few days from the start of semester. Max was busy cleaning the owls cage and filling the food and water bowls. Since bringing the the beautiful great horned owl home, the two had bonded nicely, he decided on then name Olivia. Unfortunately Loki the young raven wasn't quite so sure about the new friend Olivia and kept his distance.
"Max dear" his mother entered "I'm really sorry to ask, but I need to borrow Olivia. I have to send a letter and poor old Sherman can't make the long trips anymore. I knew you don't wanna start Hogwarts without her but it's really important"
Max let out a long sigh, she was right. He really wanted his companion with him as his nerves about Hogwarts could already be felt. He knew she wouldn't ask if it weren't important. "Fine but you'll send her to me whenever she gets back?"

Brushing away the hair from his eyes, Maximus let a low sigh. It had been a long day. After nerves and anticipation had made sleep hard to come by last night. An early wake up for the drive to London hadn't helped his cause. Being around so many people made his discomfort rise. What he wouldn't give for a little quiet place to hide away and nap for awhile. A low rumble from his belly reminded him how hungry he was. His parents descriptions of the Hogwarts feast always sounded so amazing, except for pumpkin juice. Uck pumpkins are made for pies not juice, apples, grapes or oranges now that juice material.
"Oh pardon me" some dark haired girl said shyly after her nerves seemed make her foot step on his. "Oh um yeah no worries" Maximus stuttered out as his musing was broken by the accidental encounter. After a quick look around Maximus couldn't seem to locate the interesting group he met on the train. In fact he hadn't seen anyone he had known since the hustle and bustle of unboarding the train. The boat ride across the lake he rode with few kids he never was introduced to. Was the girl beside him one of em, he wasn't sure. How could anyone focus on anything else with this grand castle in sight. He had seen castles before of course his dad and uncle took him on a tour a few years ago. Not one like Hogwarts obviously, a magic castle which he would spend the next 7 years calling home.
With that thought the grand doors that lead to the great hall opened slowly. The wait was over life at Hogwarts was about start. While most were nervous about the sorting this part didn't faze Maximus, he was going to be like his parents a proud Ravenclaw. Now being the center of attention in front of all the school even so briefly, didn't sit right in Maximus's empty stomach. As the crowd flowed in the hall and Maximus finally entered. He was immediately greeted by a tall man covered in armor. With wide eyes he took a brief moment to take this man in. Though he was not much taller than Maximus own father, this man seemed to command attention and respect. Was it his magical power or the armor that made him feel this way. The headmaster himself, how great of a wizard must he be to get this role. Maximus had heard his parents discuss the almighty Dumbledore and even McGonagall whom his mother adored. While contemplating how headmaster Lear compered to his legendary predecessors. The first years had made it the front of the hall.
Looking around the room it was magnificent. Before he could fully take in and appreciate the wonders one thing that drew his attention and made him feel slightly sick. Four tables full of upper classman seemed to study or even judge them all. Looking back to the front a another long table filled up adult wizards. The professors of Hogwarts, wow this group was a mix of friendly and foreboding looking witches and wizards. With a gulp, Maximus closed his and took a deep breath. After a moment the head master took his place and began his speech. Gasp and other noises of surprise could be heard as the sorting hat began to speak. Maximus chuckled under his breath, he was prepared for this part seems others weren't as informed.
After a few moments the sorting hat was finished with his proformance. Without much delay the first of many 1st years started to learn their destination. One name after another the sorting was underway. Maximus seen a many people filled with joy and a few with disappointment. He seen two of the people he had met on the train get sorted into Hufflepuff. He didn't get a good look to see their reactions. Good luck to them he thought he'd see them in classes at least. The girl he seen on the platform with purple streaks in her hair went to Ravenclaw. Maximus smiled nervously it'll be my turn soon and I can finally relax. "Maximus Thorne" Maximus stepped forward and could feel the weight of all the eyes on him as he sat.
"Hmmm interesting an intelligent mind" The voice of the sorting hat being in his head was a weird feeling "Yep mom was strict with education" Maximus thought. "Creative, and hard working also" The years of drawing and teaching himself to play his guitar crossed his mind. "Some self confidence but a reclusive nature too" once again the voice rang in his head. "I think I know what to do with you" Maximus broke a small grin at this "Yeah Ravenclaw like mom and dad" With a small chuckle the sorting hat exclaimed for all to hear.
"HUFFLEPUFF"
With the hat pulled off his head Maximus got right up took two steps and froze solid. Wait what did it say? The shock just immediately made his whole being numb. Turning to look back the hat seemed to grin at him. A clearing of the throat and the look of the professor told Maximus to move along. Hearing the applause from the Hufflepuff table, Maximus headed in that direction. His body felt cold, feet heavy, stomach sick and mind a mess. "Why" Maximus asked himself with no answer. As he was warmly greeted upon arriving at the table. Maximus seemed to be on auto pilot returning greetings with a nod as he sat. With on uncomfortable glance at the Ravenclaw Maximus sighed deeply "I'm a Badger" Whatever that means I'll see shortly.

Welcome to the Scamander Suite
As the headmaster called an end to the feast, the great hall become a mess of noise. Prefects shouting to be heard to wrangle in the 1st years. Maximus arose with the rest and fell in line. His first feast not what he had been expecting. Confusion and disappointment at not being sorted in to Ravenclaw like his parents, was still eating at him. He managed to eat some and of course it was delicious but best thing was it helped him to avoid much of the conversations. He needed to time to get his head around it all.
The swarm of students exited the hall and made way for the stairs leading down to the common room. Prefects guided the group of first years like professionals it was actually kind of impressive. Max glancing at his fellow classmates, he spotted the girl from the train whispering to another girl he had been introduced to but couldn't remember her name. On the other hand the boy Edward he met seemed to be taken in everything with a silent unreadable look.
Coming to a stop in front of what looked like an oversized barrel. The prefect in front was explaing how to enter and some common room rules. Knocking on barrels, really? no riddles or passwords. Upon stepping in the common room Max was in aw. It was so homey with greenery and bright for being practically underground. Being reminded of the wonderful peace and solitude he had spending time in his favorite wooded areas back home. If only there were some birds flying and singing their wonderful songs. Oh man he missed his own feathered companion Loki the mischievous raven.
With an unexpected realization he felt his spirits were starting to lift. Was it the beautiful common room? Or the fact he had possibly made some friends to share the next 7 years with. Maybe just the humble polite nature of these Hufflepuffs. He wasn't sure yet. The prefects had now moved on to explaining the dorms. First was a suite that was quiditch fans dream come true. Max who did enjoy the wizard sport wasn't that crazy about it, the wizard boys he had known drove him nuts talking about it. As the name Newt Scamander was mentioned Max now had his full attention stoked. He knew the name and the stories from books his mom had and the text book they'd be using.
Entering this suite was like nothing Max could've imagined. The treehouse vibe with aged looking wood floors. Then the prefect mentioned something that made the decision instantly for Max. The huge mural on the wall was enchanted to show different animals and there'd be Thunderbird and maybe a rare chance to see a Phoenix. Then Max seen it, the bed that would be his. It was decorated in a magnificent blue plumage. He immediately walked over to claim it. He sat down thoughtfully watching others pick their own accommodations. Well it's been a day I'm not sure if I understand it all but maybe the hat was right. Maybe I do belong here. I gotta write mom and dad hope they aren't disappointed. First I need some sleep tomorrows gonna be interesting.
