Moray Morcant was born for the ocean, so it was to her dismay that she would spend her teenage years in a stuffy jungle under the tutelage of a man that could only be described as Singapore’s less-sophisticated answer to Jay Gatsby.

Momo was born to two Gold Coast locals. The Morcants lived in a lower-income community within the suburb of Mudgeeraba because their jobs didn’t pay nearly enough for the lavish Gold Coast proper, but they loved what they did so much that finding something that paid more was never on the table for James and Coral Morcant. Her father, a dolphin trainer at the marine park, and her mother, a surf instructor, were both deeply entwined with the waters and aquatic life of the eastern Australian coast, so when their daughter followed in their footsteps, it was expected. In fact, their love for the ocean was passed on to Momo even before she could crawl. It was an inside joke for the family that they were all part-fish, and for as long as she could remember, Momo dreamed about magic and mermaids.

Her childhood was filled with trips to beach for her parents’ work or their leisure. But she never took to sandcastles like she took to the waves. Boogieboarding was her favorite activity and with a professional for a mother, she learned quickly. When her parents didn’t have the time to watch her in the water, the girl would pass the time chasing crabs along the shore or picking out seashells for the family collection at home.

About two weeks before her tenth birthday, Momo exhibited her first signs of magic. Neither her nor her parents understood what was happening, but when a person calling themselves a junior dukun dropped in on their modest home, things started to make a bit more sense. Without time to adjust, Momo was ushered north by sea with another dukun. Her parents had to be left behind, and for the first time ever, Momo was on her own.

The journey to the Isle of Divination was like her personal hell. Being surrounded by all that water, but unable to even stop for a moment to take a dip? Horrible. And Momo would find that the isle’s waters were even worse. Unpredictably tumultuous, she decided that boogieboarding was a recipe for instant death. It was almost all bad, but to Tenūsa’s credit, Momo felt more at home in Omah Geni than she ever did amongst the grand hotels and constant stream of tourists that was synonymous with the Gold Coast.

Having joined her clan with less than a year left before she was chosen by a dukun, Momo struggled. She was never the best student and her parents were never concerned with her grades. All they ever asked for was a passing mark, but to Momo, it always felt like something they thought they should say rather than something they meant. This became clear to her when she failed some of her classes and they simply didn’t care. So sometimes, Momo didn’t care. That attitude was hard to break out of and Momo wasn’t even sure that she did. By the time that her clan education was complete, the young girl didn’t feel secure in any of her magical abilities.

And perhaps it was this lack of success that had gotten her stuck with Chang Wen, a Chinese-born, Singapore-raised, Ilvermorny-educated, excuse of a dukun. Momo was his first pewari and her hardest trial yet as a wizard was avoiding a breakdown after he handed her one stained chopstick to represent their contract symbol. He kept the other for himself. But Chang was nothing if not lax, and that tended to be the environment that Momo succeeded in, so maybe he would be exactly what the Morcant child needed.

As a copycat of both parents, Momo tends to be too laid-back. Taking initiative isn’t something that comes easy to her and she feels most comfortable at the back of the group where she can slip away if needed. Her only physical hobby was surfing, but since coming to Tenūsa, one would most likely find her in bed. She likes to hide from her responsibilities and prefers to not have any at all. However, becoming a pewari to Chang Wen has altered these traits slightly. The young witch finds herself more stressed than usual and taking the first step in learning has become common for her. In conversation, Momo is as easy-going as can be and she enjoys meeting new people. Her head tends to be in the clouds sometimes, but she prefers down-to-earth discussions about her interests in surfing, rock music, and ending climate change.

From spending so much time out in the sun, Momo came to Tenūsa extremely sun-kissed and tanned. However, the thick jungle has evened out her complexion. Her dark hair has been bleached by the sun and salt water, and appears as several shades of brown. Freckles dot her face and shoulders. She stands at an average height and possesses long arms that make up for her lack of strength while surfing.

The Morcants regularly volunteered for beach clean-up duties during sea-turtle nesting seasons. They spent their days getting rid of trash on the beige carpets of the coast so that they could reward themselves by sneaking around at night to get even the smallest glimpse of turtles laying their eggs. This activity was incredibly important to Momo because of her inherited love for marine animals and keeping the environment clean.

During one nesting season, Momo had worked harder than ever to help out her parents and was so exhausted that she ended up missing nightly turtle-watching. However, the Morcants were happy to take Momo out to the beach more often around the predicted hatching times so that she could see her hard work. While witnessing a group of hatchlings make their way to the ocean, the Morcants spotted some teenagers intentionally disrupting the path of the baby turtles. Momo was so angry that she almost missed the wave that inexplicably rose up from the shallows to knock one of the teenagers down to the sand. When the water receded, on-lookers were left stumped but Momo's parents had caught her unintentional focus and wondered if their daughter was special.
