Clément Guillaume Cantegrel was born on the foggy morning of the 7^th October 2012, in Lyon, France; the first and only child of Guillaume Cantegrel and Marianne Villedarie. Classmates at Beauxbâtons, they married two years after graduating. Marianne was a journalist for one of those wizarding newspapers; she wasn't the kind who travelled to exotic places and interviewed people, no. She disliked travelling, and far preferred to spend her days writing articles within the comfort of her office. Guillaume was a professional musician –⁠ a cellist, to be exact. He played either in a wizarding orchestra or as a soloist, and specialised in classical music. Unlike his wife, he adored travelling, and would never miss an opportunity to perform abroad.

The family lived in a modest apartment in the suburbs. They were not rich, but both parents seemed satisfied of their financial situation. Happiness wasn't bought with galleons, after all. Guillaume was fueled by his passion for music, Marianne by her love for her family, and Clément? Well, there couldn't have been a more sunny child than Clément.

Clément picked up the cello at the early age of three, gave his first solo performance at seven years old, and won his first academic prize a year later. Guillaume was delighted by his son's outstanding capabilities, and began taking the young boy along with him in his international travels. Marianne wasn't as glad. The father and son were often gone for weeks at a time, leaving her alone in their empty apartment, the rooms devoid of laughter and warmth. Besides, Clément had to go to school.

Six months after Guillaume and Marianne's first fight, the divorce decree was signed. When the nine-year-old Clément, clutching tightly his father's hand, refused to live with his mother, Marianne's heart shattered.

Barely three months after the divorce, Guillaume fell ill. He passed away a few weeks later. It was agreed with the authorities that Clément would return to live with his mother.

Marianne had know there wouldn't be any laughter nor any lighthearted conversation – grief and sorrow, she knew, would mark their reunion. Instead, the hollow shadow of a son presented itself on her doorstep. Cold, emotionless, almost lifeless; Clément never acknowledged his mother.

That night, Marianne sobbed. She had lost her husband, and she wondered, laying awake in the dark, whether she just lost a son as well.

At ten years old, Clément was diagnosed with depression. The symptoms were clear; he wouldn't eat, wouldn't sleep, wouldn't talk to anyone. When he did open his mouth, groans, shrieks then insults flew out, a cacophony of wild syllables blurring the exterior world. Clément ignored his mother and her ceaseless attempts to reach him. He wasn't being fair to her – and deep down, he knew – but it seemed like all his rage and despair had nowhere to go except pour all over his mother.

Cello was Clément's only cure. He practised not with passion, but with obsession, sometimes playing for hours nonstop, shutting down everything around him. In times like these, it was only him and his cello. When playing brought back too many painful memories, and suddenly, all of it became unbearable, he crawled onto his bed and cried until he fell asleep. Then, his mother, puffy-eyed, would creep into his room and quietly pull up his covers.

Just when it seemed like darkness would drone on forever, things took a turn for the better. Moments before the sun disappeared behind the horizon on a breezy August day of 2024, Clément returned his mother's embrace for the first time in years.

Slowly, bit by bit, life stitched itself back together.

At first, it was hard. The silence that had stretched between mother and son for all those months was so thick, so imposing that it required every ounce of will to break through. Everything felt stiff, unnatural and awkward. Mutual trust had to be relearnt. Countless times Clément was on the verge to give up – being constantly angry seemed a thousand times easier than struggling to maintain a peaceful relationship with his mother. Even so, maternal love won in the end.
