Sigrid Johnson grew up in Thetford, a modest town in eastern England. She was born on 11 June 2012 to Tom Johnson, a half-blood wizard, and Max Crawford, a Muggle-born witch, and had a younger sister, Enid (born 2016), and a younger brother, Lucas (born 2017). In 2018, when Sigrid was six years old, her parents split, and the custody of Sigrid and her siblings was equally shared between Tom and Max.

Sigrid attended a Muggle primary school, and quickly attained a reputation as disrespectful, disobedient, and rude. She ignored her teachers, worked only when she pleased, ran away, and when separated from the other students would fall asleep, or stare out the window, daydreaming. It was a small miracle Sigrid learnt to read at all.

Outside the classroom, Sigrid spent her hours running across the highway that sat a short distance from her home, beyond which lay the Thetford Forest. She would bring Enid and Lucas, or either her magical or Muggle friends, and they would chase each other through the trees, or build huts, until the night came and they had to go home. In particular, Sigrid loved to play Quidditch with other magical children, though banned by their parents in the danger of a Muggle catching sight of them. Sigrid dreamed of becoming a Seeker for a professional team when she grew up.

Her first instance of magic occurred at the age of six, when she became furious after losing a game to her friend at school. Just as she began to argue, a nearby water tap started gushing furiously. The quick flow of water stopped once the girls paused to stare in curiosity (and as Sigrid's angry feelings had finally begun to subside).

Part 1: Tom & Max

	On Elm Road, by the south-eastern outskirts of Thetford, in Norfolk, England, a row of terraced homes, each made of the same mottled red brick and rising two storeys high, stand nearly identical to their neighbours. Second to the far right is the Johnson residence. Fitted with dark curtains, and with a front yard growing desolate from the thick foliage of overgrown plants, it is hard to see much of the house at all. From the chimney often emits curious fumes of unnatural colours, and the front door has been painted a rather garish yellow. The residents of Elm Road are puzzled by the strange behaviours of the Johnsons; the three children run rampant through Thetford, only to disappear for months on end to an unnamed high school, while the parents are rarely seen at all. The home itself is chaotic. Downstairs, the kitchen and living room change capriciously from periods of cleanliness and order, to times of uncontrollable mess. Ingredients like bats’ spleens and earthworms line the cupboard, and the fridge screams loudly when left open. The rug changes colour depending on the weather, and a cup of quills stands in the bookshelf. Upstairs, three single beds have been squeezed into the master bedroom, decorated with animated posters of Quidditch players and strings of colourful lights. Next door, a neatly furnished room contains a double bed only partially used, as one half is occupied instead with ordered piles of parchment and thick books. In 2011, the house had been leased to partners Tom Johnson and Max Crawford. Thomas Christopher Johnson is a half-blood wizard, born in Lancashire the third son and fourth child in a brood of eleven. He has a tall, wiry frame and sharp features, a reactive and receptive man, from Gryffindor. Despite Tom’s best efforts, he struggled both academically and socially at Hogwarts and gained a reputation as a troublemaker. This was in part brought on by the infamous marriage of his parents, the Muggle-born Nicholas Johnson and the pureblood Davida Murtagh, escalated by their large collection of children and subsequent seclusion from the community that marked them, and Tom, as antisocial recluses. Upon graduating, Tom moved around the country, picking up odd jobs to earn a living. His admiration of his self-assured and beautiful schoolmate Max continued as they got older. Katherine Maxine Crawford is a Muggle-born witch born to parents Paul Crawford and Stephanie Young, raised in Hampshire, though her family claimed a vague French heritage. Paul and Stephanie preferred to distance themselves as much as possible from the magical world without openly casting aside their daughter. Max found a refuge at Hogwarts among magic, and flourished in Ravenclaw, meeting a small group of close friends and earning high marks. Both Tom and she left school in 2007, and Max was able to secure a job as a scribe in the Ministry of Magic. She first pitied Tom and the hardships she seemed to attract, then admired his continued optimism, before coming to love him despite their overwhelming differences. They began seeing one another in 2009, and after two years of an admittedly casual, yet mutually enjoyable, relationship, they had moved to Thetford. The next year, Tom and Max both being twenty-		two years old, the couple gave birth to a daughter, named Sigrid Katherine Johnson, in the morning of 11 June 2012. The name Sigrid came from one of Max’s dearest friends, and Katherine was taken from Max’s birth name. Both grew up with siblings, Tom had eleven and Max just one, and a child seemed a logical progression, though they disregarded marriage as an unnecessary formality. Tom was enraptured by his little daughter, and loved to care for her and keep her entertained by playing silly games. He called her Siggy-Ziggy and she became the centre of his world. On the other hand, Max found it hard to adapt to motherhood. She felt discomforted in having to step away from much of her Ministry work, and would make excuses to leave Thetford when she could. Housework felt neverending and unrewarding, and she was not used to struggling, normally succeeding in everything she did. She would push Tom to take time off work so she could return to the Ministry while he cared for Sigrid. Sigrid grew quickly. She was a loud and adventurous infant, screaming for attention and seeking out dangerous objects whenever she had the chance. She had her father’s brown curls and sharp eyes, and her mother’s soft features. When she learned to walk, it became her mission to run as far as she could, before being scooped up. Tom laughed at her adventures, but Max became increasingly drained, and dropped Sigrid off with neighbouring parents during the week to go to work. Though Tom often questioned Max’s growing absence from Thetford, he didn’t dare argue in the knowledge that his income was too small and infrequent to supply them, and he knew Max simply wanted the best for the three of them. Four years later, in 2016, Max had another daughter named Enid Laura Johnson. In 2017, a year after that, she had a son, Lucas Charles Johnson. Now made of five, the Johnson family seemed to pause to catch its breath. For a little more than a year, Tom and Max worked together in silent camaraderie, bound by the collective responsibility of their three young children, and barely a complaint was brought forward. In 2018, these buried irritations and disputes grew to a point of no return. Like a kettle boiling, Tom and Max could no longer hold in their disagreements. Tom believed Max needed to spend more time at home, instead of relying on neighbours to care for the children, and felt inadequate that he alone could not support them. Max thought Tom’s expectations for her were unattainable, and resented his constant push for her to remain at home when it made her feel so miserable, and only long more to return to work. Their differences seemed to become more apparent over time, dividing them. Tom thought they should have married as a sign of their faithfulness, but Max believed him to be old-fashioned and sentimental, and refused. Max thought they should have married to quieten the rumours, but Tom believed her to be cynical and insecure, and refused. To their credit, Sigrid understood little of these arguments beyond the natural squabbles of relationships. It didn’t seem incredibly significant to her when they parted ways in 2018. It had been a long time since both had lived together anyway.

Part 2: Thetford Forest & Thetford Primary

	Tom kept renting the home on Elm Road, and Max brought a small home not fifteen minutes away by car, and the custody of the children was equally split. This worked relatively well in the beginning, but it wasn’t long (or, admittedly, much of a surprise) before Max, burdened again by the chores of children, would create excuses to shorten the time she cared for them, or before Tom, wanting not to sacrifice his time with them but unable to escape work, would leave them for periods without supervision. Sigrid, free from parental control and left only with her childish desires, spent her days however she pleased, playing with the neighbouring children, catching buses to random places to ‘explore’, and eating whatever she wanted, namely, sweets and juice. There was, after all, not much all a small, lonely child could fill their days with, so she sought to surround herself constantly with others, and became something of a wild child, uncaring of scolding adults and sleeping whenever she wanted to. This did come to alienate her from other children, as their parents warned them to be cautious around her, but this made Sigrid only more desperate for their company, and she acted to draw attention to herself, completing risky dares or breaking solemn rules, making a name for herself as naughty. It wasn’t all fun and games. Sigrid took on responsibility for her siblings, Enid and Luke, as her parents (Papa and Mama, she called them) struggled to find time. This meant feeding them, watching out for them, and tending any problems that might arise. She was only a young child, and there was only so much she could do, but she took pride in it nonetheless, and when there was no-one to play with, she always had Enid and Luke. Enid was four years younger than Sigrid. She was the complete opposite of her older sister, with her father’s quiet nature but without his impetuosity, and with her mother’s intelligence but without her confidence. She had darker hair, the same rounded features, and preferred drawing and playing cards than running outside. Enid complemented her sister and would always stand by her side, looking up to her and forever loyal. Though she never dared admit it, and unlike her siblings Enid held a silent hope that her parents would one day take up their responsibilities, and that she may be a part of a regular family. Luke was a year younger than Enid, and five years younger than Sigrid. He had tousled, dark hair with his father’s elegant, sharp features, and was very much his mother’s son, dreadfully wicked and nimble, though lacking too much in patience to have her intelligence. He was sheltered most from his parent’s tumultuous arguments, but more at home in the chaos of abandonment his siblings faced. He revelled in mischief and caused endless issues for his older sisters, but was irresistibly cute and a bundle of laughs, always with a joke at hand. Sigrid, Enid, and Luke spent hours with their little games, and passed a lot of their time in the Thetford Forest, on the eastern side of town. They made camp, built treehouses, swam in the lakes, and fashioned crude traps. They painted their faces with mud, and ditched their shoes to run barefoot through the grass. Decorated with scratches and bruises, they were untamed but toughened. Both Tom and Max knew Sigrid couldn’t roam the streets forever. It was decided that she, and		later Enid and Luke, should attend the local Muggle school once they were old enough, to keep them off the streets and teach them some discipline. Their shared Muggle heritage meant they also recognised some importance in their children partaking in the non-magical world. Sigrid had attended Thetford Primary, a small, state-funded school, since she was five years old. In her early years, she had been a disruptive, boisterous, unafraid student, labelled as cheeky and declared as unteachable by most students. She doodled over equations, left test sheets blank, and spent far too many hours in the ‘naughty corner’. In Year 2, Sigrid had the fortune to be placed with Miss Haberfield, a passionate, patient teacher who dedicated many hours to little Sigrid, and with gentle encouragement managed to teach her how to read and write, searching beyond the restless child to find an eager student. For the first time in her life, Sigrid found herself absorbed in learning, and took to reading with much enthusiasm. In particular she loved animals and plants and the sky, because it reminded her of the forest and reassured her that her two worlds need not be separate. Nonetheless, while Sigrid would never forget her love for books and words and the sky, without Miss Haberfield in Year 3, she yet again fell into her regular patterns of trouble and nonchalance. Her misbehaviour grew as she did, from simple cheekiness to unruly rebellion. She began to talk back to teachers, to escape during lunch and skip class, and etch carvings into tables and walls. Despite her constant wrongdoings, Sigrid maintained a strong love and loyalty to the large majority of those in her life, whether she knew them well or not, and treated most with respect and kindness. To those older than herself, or in positions of authority, she dismissed them as overbearing, and treated them as such, but to her peers forever sought friendship. She thus could claim many friends in Thetford, yet (though she yearned for it) did not hold many close to her, as she continued to be labelled as naughty. Love fulfils her. With her magical friends, of whom there were a handful around Thetford, she developed a love for the game of Quidditch, dreaming as children do of future fame, and found her place as a Seeker, quick and fast. Though they were often scolded by their parents, who feared a Muggle would spot them mid-air, Sigrid and her friends snuck away to spend hours playing, and when everyone had gone home, Sigrid continued to practise, flying and throwing until it was too dark to see her hands in front of her. Her Hogwarts letter came, as she knew it would. It called both fear and excitement to her dreams.

Sigrid’s father’s mother, Davida Murtagh, born 1965, spent her youth in the northern countryside, content and happy. Her parents, Cadogan and Freda, had only two daughters, Davida and Ingrid, ending their lineage of the old pureblood family, only further demised with Davida’s disappointing marriage. ──────────────── The Crawford family. Sigrid’s mother’s father, Paul Crawford, was born in 1961 to Louis and Caroline Crawford, younger brother to Suzanne and older to Simone. From an affluent Muggle family, Paul led an easy life and never left his hometown of Hampshire, breaking the mould only to marry his not-so-affluent love, Stephanie. The Young family. Sigrid’s mother’s mother, Stephanie Young, born 1964, remained the only child of Daniel and Jessica Young, was gifted with a beauty and grace capable of lifting her from the poverty of her youth, and she refused to look back, adopting completely the airs of the upper-middle class so foreign to her birth.
