Biography
[reducio]London was where it was all at - the glamour, the riches, the excitement. Allegra's mother, Cadenza, famous for her gift of playing the piano, toured the city, performing to muggles and wizards alike. Brio, her father, was in a wizarding band called Cantis, named after the spell to make one sing. Due to how busy they were, Allegra was made to attend a muggle school that had a heavy focus on music education. There, she made a few friends; however, most kids saw her as a combination of gifted and odd.
The name Cadenza Steinway always drew one’s ear when it was said. Cadenza’s performances were considered special by the wizarding community. She wasn’t just a pianist, but a creator of magical, musical performance art. From the moment her fingers touched the keys, she surrounded herself with an aura that changed colour depending on the mood of the music.
Allegra, her mother’s daughter, was expected to follow in her footsteps. Allegra adored the piano, and spent hours practising and following her mother around to shows. She knew that when she went to Hogwarts, she wanted to learn magic so that she could also use it in her own performances. The hours she put in made her advanced for her age, but did nothing to help her social skills - she had few friends, and many children saw her as odd.
On her eleventh birthday, Allegra received her acceptance letter to Hogwarts. It arrived with a tawny owl who rapped on the window with its talons. Allegra ran to the window to let it in, and was so excited that she struggled to detach the scroll of parchment. The owl clucked impatiently until the letter was released, and then flew out of the window and out of sight.
She’d dreamed for years about the moment she could lay her hands on the smooth, crisp parchment that invited her to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Both of her parents had attended and had loved the school with all their heart. They’d told her a lot about their adventures in the castle, and Allegra hoped that, when she arrived, it would be the amazing, exciting place she believed it to be.

First Instance of Magic
[reducio]Piano lessons were the highlight of Allegra’s week. Melody Sinclaire, her piano teacher, visited the flat every Saturday afternoon, and they spent an hour making music together. Melody was a tall witch with a naturally stern appearance, but a personality soft as cotton. Thin with long fingers, it seemed like she only had to touch a piano for beautiful sounds to come out of it.
Allegra longed to be like her. For months, she begged Melody to teach her how to play Beethoven’s Für Elise. Originally, Melody said no on two counts: First, it was a more difficult piece than Allegra had ever played before, and she might not be ready for it. Second, Melody hated Für Elise. It was a cliché of a piece, she declared - there was much greater music out there to be explored. But Allegra was adamant that she wanted to learn it. Thus, Melody promised that once Allegra had turned eight years old she could begin playing it.
On Allegra’s eighth birthday, Melody presented her with a birthday present. It was a score of Für Elise. Allegra was overjoyed, and started to practice immediately. The piece turned out to be difficult, as Melody had said. That Allegra was attempting it at the mere age of eight was astounding.
She practiced and practiced, not deterred by the music’s complexity, making plenty of mistakes along the way, determined to get it exactly right one day. That day finally came one morning as Allegra restlessly worked on a more complicated passage. She felt as though she was almost there, that she might soon get it.
As her fingers rested on the keys, Allegra closed her eyes and gritted her teeth with determination. This is the one, she thought. She wasn’t sure why, but had the feeling that this time she would get it right. The music engulfed her mind, and her fingers began pushing out the notes one by one, consolidating what she had worked on for months as her muscle memory kicked in, going naturally to where they were supposed to go. As she played, bright light burst out around her, first white, then red, then purple, green, yellow - and it changed and morphed as her fingers moved across the keys, a rainbow of aura to accompany the music.
Then, the piece came to an end. A flawless rendition. Slowly, the aura faded. Allegra opened her eyes, a soft smile on her face. Perfection.
