Chestnut wood is a complex wood. It is impressionable, and so when given to a master, it will hold itself to the master’s personality and mannerisms. This means that it will only work well for another if it is won, and even then, it will be mismatched. When a chestnut wood wand contains a dragon heartstring core, the master is likely to value possessions and appearance more than deeper truth. Thus, it is often paired with unicorn hair, and owners of this wand often have a strong sense of justice.
Why a unicorn hair wand chose Anja has always been a mystery to her. A unicorn hair core often attaches itself to a stable, loyal wizard, and are one of the hardest cores to turn to the Dark Arts. Anja shares none of these qualities. However, a wand with a unicorn hair core is often very stubborn and is hard to attach to a new master. One thing about her wand that Anja hates the most is that it does not produce very powerful magic, so she has to try very hard to succeed.

ReducioAnja comes from a long line of pure-bloods, all Slytherins. Her father was schooled by her grandparents into believing that pure blood is far superior to all other bloods. He attempted to school Anja in this ideology, but Anja did not enjoy it, so when he thought she was researching, she had actually been looking at Muggle defensive techniques. Anja continued to put up a facade around family, but she enjoyed going out into the woods around her home with a book to get away from the madness and let her guard drop for a few minutes. Despite her personality, she continued to stay solid to her own beliefs.
Anja's childhood was mostly happy, notwithstanding her father and grandparents. She enjoyed visits to her cousin, Lila, the only family she knew on her mother's side. She rarely went down to the Muggle town near their estate, but did like the presents her mother would sometimes bring. Because of her alienation, one thing Anja knows very little about is the Muggle world, so she looks forward to Muggle Studies at Hogwarts. She enjoys reading, writing and watching Quidditch.
Her family is from Finland, but they moved here when she was born so that she could go to Hogwarts. However, her grandparents had been brought up in the time when Pure-Bloods were considered, in some circles, far superior to Half-Bloods and Muggle-Borns. Having had this philosophy drilled into their heads from an extraordinarily young age, they went to fight for a Purist ideal. They are both now in Nurmengard, where Anja hopes they shall stay. She was born on the thirteenth of November 2008, to Alvar Murtaja and Zalika Murtaja (nee. Kirous). It is said that the rain poured through the roof when she was born, and her mother enjoys telling that story at soirées and dinners.
Her childhood is perhaps the main reason her personality is what it is, and she doesn't regret that. Her personality is what gave her the drive to continue believing in what she thought was right and not give up.
Her first known instance of magic was when she, at three years old, brought down the crystal chandelier in the drawing room of her Oxfordshire estate. Anja's grandparents had come to visit, and she had accidentally told them of her Half-Blood cousin, Lila. They had scoffed and asked why she would associate with such types. This clearly threw her into a tantrum, and the chandelier crashed down near the very place they sat. Of course, they had not been seriously harmed, but the glass had scratched them, and she remembers feeling great triumph. Every time her grandparents would visit, she reinforced her mind and became the model Pure-Blood heir.

The Murtaja Estates are a large source of pride for Anja. They are situated all over Europe, and are all hidden by charms that repel both Muggles and 'unworthy' wizards alike.
BRISEADH A 'CHAISTEIL
Briseadh a ’Chaisteil is Anja's favourite. She likes the medieval architecture and the run down-ness of the castle. Of course, her parents don't like her staying there, but it is where her family resides when visiting Hogwarts. She tries to go there as often as possible and enjoy the wide, open Scottish scenery.
LINNANMURTAJA
Linnanmurtaja, the family castle, in Finland, is where Anja was born, and where she would continue to live had she not wanted to go to Hogwarts. If she had stayed in Linnanmurtaja, she would have gone to Durmstrang. She is glad she moved to England, as if she had been accepted to Durmstrang, she would have found it so much harder to keep to her own anti-blood-purity philosophy. Despite having moved out, the castle still buzzes with life, filled with countless house-elves and human servants.
Linnanmurtaja has provided a hiding place for both sides during times of conflict, with its countless cellars and dungeons.

HERRASKARTANO MURTAJA
Surrounded by woods and large gardens, this is where Anja lives. It is located near Wytham Woods in Oxfordshire, and the actual estate grounds span acres of forest. Anja enjoys taking walks in the surrounding forests. She likes the grandeur of the house. It holds good and bad memories, but it's not as 'lived in' as the other estates and feels rather clinical at times.
