The backstory of Jackson Valentine told from the perspective of his father, James Valentine.

Valentine was an adopted child who lived in a muggle family. His adoptive parents were foreign immigrants from Hong Kong who came to seek a democratic lifestyle and the free market in the United Kingdom. His mother was infertile, but the pair had a desire to find a greater purpose in their lives by creating a vessel to pass on their legacy. That vessel would eventually be a one-year-old abandoned baby who was staying at an orphanage. Valentine would never get to know his adoptive mother, as at the ripe old age of three, she promptly disappeared without a trace, leaving his father as his sole guardian.

His father, James, adopted the stage name 'Valentine' as a magician in the entertainment industry. As Valentine grew, he would never learn that he was an adopted child, instead being told that his mother was a caucasian lady who had abandoned them when he was three. He would also never learn of his real last name, as his father quite quickly registered himself as a permanent resident in the United Kingdom under the name "James Valentine", and his son under the same surname, deciding to leave behind his old identity to better assimilate into society.

During his years spent raising his son with what little he had, James endured the underlying notions of racism that assailed him daily. Valentine's grandfather (James's father) had left behind almost nothing for him, as he was a bum who squandered away their family's possessions. It left a deep mental scar on the impressionable James, who desired the success for his son that he would never be able to find in his own lifetime. But how would he go about achieving this?

His father had been apathetic toward the things he did, never bothering to discipline him or teach him anything about the real world. As such, he grew up with a sub-optimal education and sub-optimal first world skills, most of which he had picked up on his own. He decided then that he wasn't going to repeat his father's mistakes.

When the boy was young, he was extremely easy to handle. Eager to learn, eager to please; it warmed his heart greatly. But as Valentine grew older, his immense learning drive seemed to. . . Diminish. The boy began to grow distracted by other, fickle things. The thought terrified James, that his boy would end up just like him, but he didn't know what to do. He was also frustrated that his control of his child was gradually decreasing with every year that passed. As such, he began to reinforce the habits he aimed to instill with a greater degree of overall strictness. He was adamant that he would not fail his child the same way his father had failed him.

I stopped writing a diary when I realized that it was time-consuming, and time is hard enough to afford as it is.

As such, this is entry 21 of my diary, almost five years after I learned to write. I think I’m being haunted by a ghost. Trust me, I believe in science more than anything. The theory of evolution and all that stuff, it’s really interesting. But there is no way that science can explain what’s going on, and nobody believes me.

Am I going crazy? Am I am amnesiac? Do I forget things that I do? Maybe writing this diary will instill a habit of constant writing, so that I can always look back and read this if I ever forget who I am and the things I’ve done. So far, there’s nothing to lead me to suggest that I’m suffering from chronic memory loss, though.

I seriously think there’s a ghost haunting my house. If I disappear one day, and this book is ever found, understand that none of this is a joke. Okay. . . Here’s the gist of what’s going on:

My room is never in a mess. I don’t know how else to explain it. Every time I look away, leave my room or just blink, anything that’s out of place reverts to a state of order. My parents think I’m just very disciplined and believe me, I wish I was. But I’m not doing any of this. There’s a spirit possessing my house, and as much as I appreciate what it’s doing for me, this is creepy!

The fact that paranormal stuff like this exists just makes me wonder what other things could exist out there. Once again, this isn’t a joke. Something is seriously wrong with my house.

Evelynn Decipio approaches Valentine as he is brooding after the December Holidays. He is reeling from the aftermath of the harrowing train ride to Hogwarts, as well as the revelation that his previously only friend, Ruka Burnett, had been pulled from the school in favor of homeschooling.

Valentine has an unexpected encounter with the cunning Slytherin Mathias Pride. The two have a tense altercation in which neither are willing to risk getting themselves into trouble whilst laying claim to the pseudo ownership of an abandoned classroom. What ensues is a battle of wit, psychological warfare, and a few spells.
