Beauxbatons owes her existence to an idea of one wizard who sought to educate the young. The fabled magician known as Maugris D'Aigremont was only a young man when his name was first spoken amongst Frankish royalty. It was Charles Martel who summoned a rumoured enchanter to his court and asked for a display. Presenting his most prized possession, a wand, a young and mischievous Maugris merely complied to the order as he forced the king and queen to shed their clothes and dance in front of their entire court. "Veja meu bèu baston, monsenhor. M'autrejatz la dança qui veng?" (*) The young magician cried out as he mocked the curious king.

From that early point in the wizard's life, he would suffer a strained relationship with the Frankish bloodline. While certainly not welcome near the king's throne, he did travel with several members of his court. One of these was Maugris' cousin, Sir Renaud de Montauban. Renaud was a knight who traversed the land and became famed for his many adventures. What many did not know at the time however, was that Maugris was with him. Maugris had taken Renaud under his study, offering magical tutorship to a man of physical principle.

Legends of their exploits are still told today. Like how Maugris came into possession of the horse Bayard and passed it over to his cousin later in life. Or how stories traversed the land of the four sons of Aymond that wielded flaming blades alongside the magician. The relationship between the wizard and the Frankish kings was worsened by the fact Maugris once decided to steal from Charlemagne himself.

While talented from birth, Maugris' wisdom came only later in life. It was his journeys across Europe and the Middle East that broadened his perspective. Finding many equally gifted children like himself, he realised none of them had been so lucky for tutorship as him. A burning promise that only grew over the years, Maugris set out to find his old mentor, the wise Baldaris, and sought to find a safe haven to build his school.

It was Renaud's idea of settling in the Pyrenees. While disputed lands on the Spanish border, the mountains were often a road untravelled. The hot springs near le pont d'Espagne would offer them a peaceful retreat where they could build their new home. The famous first trip Maugris ever made to collect his students was in Cannes. From there he gathered a handful of apprentices and led them into the mountains for teaching. Bèubaston, named after his most prized possession and his infamous words towards the muggle king, gave its first class in 777. Maugris would make his journey every year, starting from Cannes, to lead his newest apprentices to their school. Until three years prior to his death in 810, when he had got too old to travel.

The highly complicated history of the French school of magic has been the subject of speculation for over 700 years. Its earliest known public entry to the outside world was by its participation in the first ever organised Triwizard Tournament of 1294. It is known to be one of Europe's three greatest schools where magic is taught in safety. Accepting students from several neighbouring countries, it can be said the school's population would rank among the highest of Europe as well.

The Beauxbatons Academy of Magic also known as the Académie de Magie Beauxbâtons is a relatively recent jewel within the crown of Wizarding Education. Hidden high in the arms of the Pyrenees Mountains, the Castle of Beauxbatons lays among the clouds as it peaks into a scenic stronghold built for the advancement of magical education. The school’s history dates back to 777 A.D with the Castle itself being built centuries later. It still exists as a marvel for those who experience the delicate grounds of the Western European school.

Initial Creation:

The pressing need to expand physically was the driving force behind the initial vision of the Castle’s construction. Beauxbatons accepts students from France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Greenland, Monaco, Quebec, Switzerland and the Netherlands, meaning that a school capable of holding great numbers was needed. Because of this, the Departments of Magical Education of the respective countries came together with the generosity of notable alumnus, Monsieur Nicholas Flamel for initial funding. The generosity of all participants allowed for a divine structure to be created in harmony with the original educational values of the Academy. Without the amassed funding, the academy as the world knows it today would look vastly different. The naturalistic beauty of the Pyrenees Mountains was always destined to house the Castle. The origins of the school were rooted as deep as the Mountains themselves stretched. However, such a structure simply wasn’t an overnight oversight. Years of meticulous planning combined with scrupulous enchantments and spellcraft were needed to ensure the Castle was fortified from Mother Nature and her vastly changing moods.

The Architechture

The Castle’s main structure is built with the purest form of white granite, sourced from the Mont Lozère region. This border between France and Spain required the bulk of the funds as it was delicate to quarry. A necessary investment, the vision for the rare stone would go on to incorporate Baroque and Rococo architectural ideas. The stone itself is smooth, unblemished and gleams under all forms of weather present in the mountains, giving the Castle a divine appearance. As though the Mountains forged a heavenly homestead. A grand bridge serves as the main entryway -connecting the mountain trail leading from Cannes to the Pyrenees coordinates- that students embark upon through the means of the Abraxan drawn carriages. This magnificent bridge has been carved from Calcutta marble matching the pale stone of the granite. Differing however with the veins of silver and gold that seem to shine with the strength of the Abraxan teams. Spanning the gulch between both the mountain’s cradle and the rest of the world it is this bridge that makes a statement both physically and spiritually to demonstrate the symbiotic relationship between magic and man. It is said that those with a conflicted heart benefit the most from a walk across the bridge with the veins of gold shifting to reflect the innermost truth.

The education system of Beauxbatons differs slightly from its other European counterparts. A unique concept of the school is when students sit for their weighted exams. Like most students entering magical education, their formal first year begins at age 11 where they enter the “College” section of their studies. Students are introduced to fundamental subjects such as Charms, Potions, History of Magic, Transfiguration, and Herbology. It is imperative for the students to begin with a basic knowledge setting as they will be offered a wide variety of subjects to study that rely on a deeper understanding of core subjects. In accordance with the school's fine arts focus, students are also enrolled in Etiquette, and offered courses in the Written Arts (such as story-writing and poetry), Physical Arts (such as dance and movement), Visual Arts, and Music. There is no limit to what a student chooses to enroll in provided they can balance their core subjects with their extra-curriculars.

The second and third years spend their time focusing on their core subjects and beginning to gravitate towards one or two in particular that they feel the most connected to. During their second year, Defense Against the Dark Arts is added as a core subject while Glamour Magic and Magical Artistry are added as extra-curriculars. In third year, students are given their last core subject, Care of Magical Creatures. Much like Hogwarts, students have a large choice of freedom regarding their studies. Third years can now take Arithimancy, Ancient Runes, Healing, and Magical Performance (Dance and Music.) It is during a student's third year that they should begin to study for their College Exams that will take place at the end of their fourth year.

The fourth year of a student's life at Beauxbatons is notorious for being the most difficult. The final subjects offered to students are Divination and Duelling. This is the final year of College for a student and upon completion of their exams they are allowed to graduate, having received their “brevet des collèges.” Because of Beauxbatons wide variety of subjects, students are expected to have focused on a select few which would set them up for success should they choose to leave their education after exams and enter the professional world. These exams are comprehensive and consist of questions and practical exams that encompass every core subject a student has studied. Students are expected to sign up for three exams based on their extracurricular studies (one for each year) and pass an etiquette test. At least one extracurricular exam should be completely focused on some type of art to demonstrate the students' understanding of creativity and ingenuity to problem solving. This type of art does not necessarily need to reflect which dormitory they reside in throughout their time at Beauxbatons however most students gravitate towards Arts exams that are related to the School of Arts they were sorted into upon arrival at Beauxbatons.

The following three years of education are dedicated to a ceremony and study known as The Rite of Prospect or Le Rite de la Prospection. This prestigious opportunity is something that is specifically designed for Beauxbatons students as a way to match them with job opportunities upon completion of three years of rigourous academic study with a tutor or academic advisor and the presentation of their studies at their graduation. The presentation of their study is similar to that of a "Thesis" in which the student is expected have picked a focus of study and expanded upon it to demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter and career field.

This event matches students who are interested in a specific subject or job prospect, as well as introduces them to the upper level educators at the academy. Beauxbatons invites tutors, respected professionals in their field and other potential educational investors for students to meet with and discuss employment opportunities. Students who are matched with a tutor are free to pursue any type of apprenticeship which will take place outside of the academy. Students are also free to continue pursuing a less-specified track by attending the ‘lycée’ or more basic branches of magical education. Neither option is inaccessible to students provided that they pass their basic exams and choose to continue education with the help of the Beauxbatons professors.

The next three years become increasingly difficult as these years focus on a student's particular skill set. If they are under an apprenticeship, they are expected to demonstrate progression to maintain any scholarships offered by the school and endorsements by their tutors. Many students who choose to remain at Beauxbatons are often those who have been inducted into the Guilde d'Alchimiste which is a prestigious Alchemy tutoring taught in the cave system of the mountains that the school resides above. Students in the lycée are expected to focus heavily on one or a few of the core subjects that they were instructed in and reach a level of proficiency that would help them secure employment once graduating. While in the lycée, students are able to partake in sports such as Duelling, Broom Racing and Quidditch. Beauxbatons offers a select few of their more adept students a scholarship in Broom Racing which is another one of the more coveted opportunities awarded by the school. Students who complete three years of study in the lycée are awarded a certificate of completion and letters of recommendation from the school once they begin to apply for jobs.

Apprenticeships last three years with a comprehensive written evaluation and practical application required at the end of the course to graduate and progress into the professional world. Students are given a date to produce an exhibition which requires precision, finesse, and an attention to detail that has been instilled in them since their beginning days at the academy. The students will present their work, and give a detailed verbal presentation about what they learned in their studies. They will also be presented with a final practical exam by their Tutor or Professor in whatever field of study they chose for the examiners. Upon completion with a passing grade, any student who meets the graduation criteria will be awarded with high honors and a position in their chosen field of study. Those who pass with the highest scores will be awarded better opportunities but the entire process is dedicated to students who want more specified education for a specific job or career field.

Invitation
Children, coming from wizarding families, will receive their invitation to the Academy in the form of an Abraxan feather. Once the feather is received, it will find the first piece of paper in its vicinity (every year the academy receives several complaints on how the feather wrote all over a father's newspaper. Or worse...) and start writing golden lettered instructions on how to apply for Beauxbatons. It will then be used to access the meeting place. A handmade sign, representing Beauxbatons will arrive shortly after invitation and will be used for the sorting ceremony. Those who didn't know about magic will get a visit from the Beauxbatons Caretaker. They will bring a letter, written by an Abraxan feather, feather as a gift and a handmade sign, representing the French Academy. The sign has a shape of Abraxan and has "Beauxbatons" written on it in the golden letters. The Caretaker will explain that Abraxan feather is necessary to enter the meeting place on 1st September, and the sign is important for the sorting ceremony. Headmistress de la Croix-Valmer is creating these signs with a help of the graduating students from the Crafting Club. Later they are enchanted to give a warm light when put on the school robes. The Caretaker will explain everything about Beauxbatons, where to buy supplies, and will assign someone from staff to help if necessary.

After considerable renovations and upgrades having been realised with aided funding from Master Flamel, the school adapted and preserved its unique facade in Baroque and Rococo elements. Now a shimmering white château resting in the Pyrenees, blending in with the snow capped peaks of the mountain range at the southern edge of France.

Ground Floor:
The interior of the castle is designed in a rotunda with everything Students need for the day being easily accessible by moving around the castle rather than within. The Ground floor is home to the Dining Hall where on special occasions as gratitude to the school, the Nymphs will serenade the students with beautiful music. The students sit at tables that allow them to view their friends and acquaintances fostering camraderie between conversation. The dining hall's central focus is drawn to the Great Linden Tree where Wood Nymphs and bowtruckles come and go at their leisure. Shimmering enchanted lights fall from the ceiling, alluding to starry skys. The oldest students are invited to sit in the middle of the hall at the table underneath the Great Linden Tree, as a traditional gift, thanking them for their years of dedication to their education. Outside the Dining hall, one will also find the lodgings of the staff and the kitchen area. Staff have reported that since the renovations were done in 2026, the lodgings better fitting the needs of the staff who cultivate the Castle's magical attendees.

The First Floor:

The First Floor houses Ballrooms, guest quarters for those visiting the magnificent grounds, and a simplistic style conference room designed to benefit the Board of Directors for matters of upmost importance. Throughout the year, music and joy radiates from all corners of the First Floor as the Ballrooms are filled with musical prodigies and those in enjoyment of the fine arts. It is from the First Floor that guests of the school will enter, bypassing the Bridge completely. A specialized balcony allows for whomever is entering the school to direct themselves to their quarters without fear of getting lost. For the particularly inspired student, the balcony serves as a wonderous view of the setting sun. It is here where breathing stills and minds calm as the quiet majesty of the Castle stands strong behind its viewer.

The Second Floor:

The Second Floor is dedicated to the educational facilities of the school, starting with classrooms for the younger years. For students aged eleven through fifteen, their education is based around an understanding of the fundamentals with classrooms reflecting as such. These classrooms are built to both foster the development of their magical skills but also as a way to expand upon their ability to work together. The classrooms are spacious with double desks that allow multiple students to sit together. Education for the students of Beauxbatons is mandatory from ages eleven to fifteen before they are granted their brevet des collèges or 'School certificate'. In terms of skill, the classrooms are adjusted to fit the needs of the skills that are newly developing. The fifth, sixth and seventh years who choose to remain for further education have classrooms that promote individual acceleration in a chosen study or profession. When the classrooms are not in use, they are neatly decorated in the school's colors but can be decorated and arranged as the professor sees fit. No two classrooms are alike as the personality of the instructors are imbued within their classrooms.

Third Floor:

The Third Floor is dedicated to Headmistress' office and art gallery, along with the studios. Art clubs are held here and students can organize an exhibition with their work.

This floor holds a common room for all students and the entries to their dorms.

Dorms:
Over summer 2026 the castle went through some renovations. The dorms had transformed, instead looking like towers, with an entrance through the common room on the fourth floor. There were 4 towers, each one divided with sections for guys, girls and those who identified as gender-neutral.

Tower of the Written arts

The first tower was decorated with shelves upon shelves of literature of all kinds, for students that had talent in the written arts. Upon coming inside the tower, they will be in a common room where only those with this talent could sit all together. The walls were hardly seen as they were hidden behind all the shelves. However, near the window it was obvious that the walls were made of stone. It looked in harmony with the shelves and added atmosphere of calm and comfort. The view from the tower was full of mountains. The ceiling was changing from the sunny sky in the morning to the sky full of stars in the evening. The light from candles was not too bright, but bright enough for students to be able to develop their talent or do their studies.

There was a fireplace located at the far end of the room. Comfortable armchairs and sofas were there for students to read or do some other activities. Three staircases made of book shelves were leading to the rooms. Each room has bookshelves and beds. For those who would like to make their personal space more personal, they would be able to use curtains to hide their bed. Tables were placed between the beds, so students could study and do their homework.

Tower of Visual arts

The second was adorned in paintings and artistic expression, for those who were talented in art. The walls of the rooms in this tower were full of drawings and space for students to paint something to their like. It also had sculptures and a wall available for students to carve something to their like. In the common room of this dorm there were all the things that students might need to develop their talent. It also had three staircases leading to the sleeping rooms, however they were looking like a drawing of different magical creatures. Instead of fireplace it had more space for drawings. It was a tradition for the students here to draw light in any forms of it. The ceiling was a glowing drawing of the sky.

The sleeping rooms of this tower were inviting students to be creative and make their personal space full of their own drawings. The beds were placed with curtains, full of mountains and drawings. Tables and chairs were placed near the bed, so the students could study.

Tower of the Physical arts

Inside the tower walls are decorated with different ballet poses and portraits of famous dancers. The stairs are with shelves full of all the necessary accessories for each activity the students were interested in. The common room has a place to train and dance in different styles. Enchanted to keep the sounds from echoing, it gives everyone a chance to focus on their own activities.

To encourage students to achieve their goals, there's a tradition to leave a token, letting others know that everything is possible. The bedroom is more spacious in this tower, giving students a space to stretch or warm up in the morning. Depending on the student's talent, they will find equipment near their bed, necessary to develop their skills. Stone walls are surprisingly keeping the comfortable temperature throughout the year. Warm wooden floor is making a dancing and barefoot routine more comfortable even in cold winter. Mounted in the walls hooks of different shapes are ready to be used for strengthening exercises or as a part of stretching.

Then finally, the last tower was for those who were talented in music, where all manner of instruments could be found. Ceiling here was reminding of the music, calm melody that didn't bother students from practicing their talent or studying. The walls were full of musical instruments ever known. Fireplace was made in a shape of the cello. The three staircases were made of musical notes.

Sleeping rooms here were each decorated by the different types of music and musical instruments. The candles added atmosphere to each room. The walls were enchanted so the students who were practicing didn't bother those who were studying or resting.

Each tower had informational desk in the shape and decoration of the tower's theme. It contained the map of the castle and the map of the surrounding area. Any news and announcements could be found there as well.

There is a hallway on the ground floor that leads deeper into the mountains. It holds a series of chambers that go down in a spiralling staircase and meet into an aula at the bottom. This is where the guild of alchemists makes their home. The guild is a club created to house and tutor the more extensive group of alchemy students within Beauxbatons.

Duelling is taught in the north-eastern tower, a small turret linked to the top of the Abraxan stables. The duelling club focuses on the art of duelling as if it were a sport. Students are disciplined in fair play and victory through skill, rather than circumvention (cheating). The turret holds a duelling hall, dorm and small barrack for duel preparations. Duelling students are rarely seen outside this tower, except for meals and events, which are held in the great hall.

The Abraxan stables, which are found in the large tower that holds the duelling turret up, house at least a dozen Abraxans as the name would suggest. The breeding of these fine animals has been another tradition the academy has held up for generations. However, only recently it has begun passing its knowledge to those students who wish to study these majestic creatures in depth. Stable hands have a small dorm adjacent to the stables, deeper into the mountain. The upper rotunda of the main tower serves as Beauxbatons very own broom-racing team. While these agile students are not unfamiliar with sports such as Quidditch, they prefer to settle their debates in a far older fashion. Using hoops placed across the grounds and a series of tunnels that lead through the mountain, the academy offers a racing scholarship for those that prove themselves on the racing track. It is not always a certainty for the Beauxbatons Quidditch team to show up during international games. This is due to the members of the team being pulled from the ranks of the racing team. But since the racing team itself is rather select, the academy does not always manage to gather enough students for a full set.

The Enchanted Gardens
The Castle itself is a broad and wide stretching structure that allows for the students to explore a great deal of Nature. The grounds of the school are impeccably maintained imbued with specialized enchantments. The Enchanted Gardens are a marvel for all who set foot within them. Eternal spring draws the students in around the clock simply looking for reprieve from the day. Linden trees are present throughout the school grounds, with a rare species of Nymph cohabitating undisturbed by the bustle of life. The natural waterfalls remain in place uninterrupted by the Castle’s construction, with carefully crafted arches to allow waterflow to continue. The Gardens themselves house a tribute to Nicholas Flamel and his wife Pernelle, crafted by a devoted though nameless student with only the title: ‘La Richesse des Amoureux’ or “The Wealth of Lovers". The sculpture embodies the Academy’s gratitude to the famed Alchemist, and serves as a reminder that love is the truest wealth of the world.

Lac des Songes or Lake of Dreams

Perhaps the magnificent school of Beauxbâtons was most well known for its expanse of beautiful gardens surrounding it, the paths well-walked by the students.

Farther from the elegantly arranged flora of the grounds closest to the Academy, towards the edges where overgrown hedges and rosebushes have taken over, there is a path little known. To reach it, one must venture to the very edge of the grounds and find the path hidden from view by the two large bushes. From there, the winding path leads down through a thicket of trees, where it is quite common to find woodland creatures like small birds and squirrels. At the end of the paths is the prize for making the trek: the most stunning view. A small lakeside beach filled with river stones, and if one goes a bit further, they would see the beauty of the mountains, green with thick grass and spatterings of bushes, white on the top where reserves of snow rested year round. All of it was framed by the rippling blue-green of the lake's waters. Both because of its easy enough access and its immense beauty, the lake is a popular spot for student club meetings and events.

Wood of Whispers or Le Bois des Murmures

Unlike the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts, the Beauxbatons Forest feels different- as if it has learned etiquette. Known as the Wood of Whispers or Le Bois des Murmures, it is astonishingly beautiful, yet it is never completely safe. Sounds carry farther than they should. The echo of the footsteps can easily be mistaken for the quiet murmurs, yet only trees are standing nearby.

The forest is known for guiding those who become lost, so long as the student shows respect. However, there are parts of it that remain unwelcome, places where danger awaits for its next victim. Path may suddenly disappear without any warning - a final reminder for the adventurous soul to turn back.

At night, the main paths are lighten with the enchanted lanterns. Anyone who follows their guidance can enjoy a safe walk, but the moment one steps off, unease welcomes the student, igniting unnatural fear. The forest has stood here longer than the Castle itself. It remembers languages that are long forgotten, holds the secrets long lost by the wizards.

Close to the entrance, the woods open into several small clearings, often used for club meetings, or outdoor lessons for the Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures Professors.

The Cave Systems:
Similar to Hogwarts, Beauxbatons educates its students on Potions underneath the castle in a vast system of caves. Students must enter through a spiral staircase leading into the depths where they will be guided by the Potions Master to their workstations. The lush caves are Beauxbatons offers many advanced disciplines one of which presides hidden within the natural labyrinth. The Beaxbatons Guild d'Alchimiste is a rare and prestigious fellowship extended only to the most advanced of students. This high honor is coveted by many but awarded to only the exceptional few. The Guild meets in an area of the cavern exclusive only to members. This hidden lair is carved from a hidden calcite deposit, intricately designed to represent the alchemical properties these students know by heart. Individualized study is expected and with every inducted member comes a completely original workstation, transmuted from the calcite itself. It is part of the induction ceremony that the Alchemist in question create their workstation as a final test of sorts.

Pyrenees was a perfect location for the French school and all the opportunities the place could offer. Starting from the simple walk around the mountains, discovering many caves, or taking a moment to enjoy the view. With changes that occurred in September 2024, the school was preparing to meet all required measures to ensure the safety of every student and staff member. As werewolves were now welcomed to be part of the French school, one of the prehistoric caves was chosen to host them every full moon.

Situated in the mountains not too far from the school castle, there was one particular cave. A road, wide enough for humans to walk on, was leading directly to the entrance. The magical barrier would let them enter the cave. Outside the cave didn't have anything remarkable. Hidden from view by bushes and flowers, it had a fence made from the stones. It was high enough to keep everyone from falling, but one could still enjoy the view. Upon entering, students and staff were met by a breathtakingly amazing view. The cave inside was going deep inside, with stairs, lakes, and dead ends. A set of long stairs was leading to an open space within the cave. It was wide and high enough for everyone to find something to do and have a walk within the cave, be it a human or a werewolf. In the middle of the open space, there was a lake. The light, reflecting in the water, was not too bright but enough to see everything clearly. Making the place reveal its natural beauty and feeling the freedom of the place.

Every full moon, a werewolf professor with a caretaker would be taking werewolf students there to stay. They would meet near the entrance of the school and check if every student was there. Leading them through the forest, the path was hidden from view if one didn't know where to search for it. Once they would arrive at the entrance of the cave, the caretaker would give out the wolfsbane potion. Checking yet again that no one slipped away on the way here. In the cave, the professor would take them further, all the way to the open space. Once everyone entered the cave, the barrier would be sealed till the next day to prevent anyone from getting out. A small room near the lake had all the necessary supplies. The professor was ready to assist anyone who needed help. The caretaker was ready to assist with first aid or call for help. Keeping a wand and spare wolfsbane potion with him, he would stay outside the cave to ensure that no one could enter or escape the cave.

The Beauxbatons uniform consisted of many layers. Their main element of recognition being the long woolen sky-blue (Bleu celeste) coloured coats they wore. These would be double breasted with copper buttons on the chest and cut from the waist down on the front, leaving a long tail flowing on the back and sides. However, where a normal suit or coat would only have two functional buttons, Beauxbatons has opted for three. Under these, students wore white linen shirts tucked in a pair of ecru (beige) trousers or a long pleated skirt that were held up by narrow leather suspenders. Over these they wore a waistcoat (Bleu celeste) that could be closed by three concealed hooks and added a dark teal cravat around the neck. All students wore the same type of dark brown leather shoes.

The academy also provides sports gear to all students. These contain white flannel trousers and a short sleeved shirt or jumper horizontally striped in traditional sky-blue and white. The only additional alteration to the Beauxbatons uniform would be the racing gear only a handful of students wear that belong to the broom-racing team. Their gear consists out of trimmed leather pads and a leather helmet that curves along the back of the neck. Their brooms are fitted with iron handles for the racer's feet while keeping its design true to Beauxbatons philosophies.

When students enter their lycée, they are given a patch regarding which class they were accepted in. This patch is worn on the upper arm of their coat. Students are also handed a copper pin with the same designation to wear on either their waistcoat or jumper in case the weather does not require the use of a coat. This allows for professors and visiting mentors to easily recognise the right students.
