Alexei let out a chuckle at the girl's words. He would have found them far more threatening if they weren't coming from someone so lovely who also happened to be at least a year behind him in schooling and at least a head shorter. "Of course,дорогая" he said, the picture of a gentleman as his hand shifted to where they belonged. "I would so hate to lose your company" He shot her a rougish wink before gracefully leading her into a spin. He wondered exactly how many dances he was expected to endure with this buzzkill before it was acceptable to make the rounds and set about stealing other, less handsome boys' dates.

She was quite nice to look at, but every time she opened her mouth, Alexei wanted to smack her. Of course, he would never do that, as he was a perfect gentleman. He somewhat resented his parents for tying him to this near-stranger as opposed to letting him go stag. After all, events like this were Alexei's working space. More often than not, he would leave the night having kissed at least one girl and having been slapped or yelled at by at least two others. Perfection. Silver seemed more likely to do the latter than the former, so he was going to spend as much time as possible looking for nicer girls. "Out of curiosity, why red?" he said as she neared him again after the spin. "One would think blue, considering your lovely eyes."

"Heather is my friend from Ravenclaw, and like I had mentioned before, she looks quite a bit like you. And about the safety...let's just say, magic has it's ups and downs."

Now, whatever could that mean? Certainly, magic had its ups and downs...but how bad could they really be, besides the occasional spell mishap? Kara glanced Piper up and down again (something she wished she would stop doing), and said firmly, "I notice my words have somewhat troubled you, ma'am. I truly meant no harm. I just don't want to be the cause of someone getting hurt for my stupid mistakes again. I was once ignorant of danger, and I do not want others to be like myself of the past. Once again, do not take my words to offence." She pointed to a large scar on her lip, which Piper had (regrettably) not seen at first. Interesting. Piper was entirely mystified by now. How hurt could someone have been to cause this second-year so much regret? Her original irritation and insecurity at Kara's comment on her dress was replaced by curiosity.

The candlelight from around flickered as Kara took a sip of her drink, eyes glimmering."Due to my past mistakes, I feel as though I am responsible for those around me, so if any trouble comes our way, you can count on me to help you out!"

Trouble? What trouble? A thousand thoughts raced through Piper's head. Maybe Hogwarts wasn't as safe as she thought. Kara clearly felt bad for offending Piper and was trying to compensate. Wait. Was Piper that transparent with her emotions? If so, now would be a nice time to go jump off a cliff. But she had to stay silent. She couldn't ask childish questions, especially in front of this mature second-year.

"Well never mind that. We should at least have some fun instead of just waiting for something bad to happen. Do you want to dance together? If you don't know how, I can show you. But only if you accept." Piper did agree that some fun should happen. But there were a thousand things she had sworn to herself she would not do, and dancing broke about all those promises. Most people were on the dance floor, though, so it wasn't as if they'd be conspicuous. Piper had failed to look closely at the people around her, but now that she did, she saw a few couples on the floor, dancing as though in a fairy tale. She wondered what that must feel like. But alas, many were years older than she, and romance was overrated as far as Piper was concerned. Others were simply talking on the sidelines, and still others hovered by the food.

Ultimately, dancing with Kara wouldn't gain too much attention. Why not? She had zero knowledge of dancing, but Kara offered to show her. What kind though? Slow dance? Fun dance? "Uh...sure. Thank you." She took a few uncertain steps towards the dance floor, then stopped. "I have no idea how to dance, though." she admitted sheepishly. Never had she been so glad to have a mask; her face was a bit flushed from embarrassment. She was used to just succeeding at everything.

Piper felt she owed the girl her name, though this would be yet another broken promise to herself. But was anyone else here being all mysterious in their identity? She doubted it; most people here seemed to recognize each other. Should she wait till after the dance to tell? Who could wait that long? Awkwardly, the words came out before Piper could overanalyze to death. "Erm...my name's Piper, by the way." It was done. Hopefully she turned out great at this, because if not, this night could quickly turn into a nightmare. She smiled a small smile at the older girl. "I felt you should know."
Ack, so sorry I took so long! I've been very busy recently.

SAPPHIRE GAVE A LIGHT SMILE, though it was also shadowed by her usual nervousness. "No need to worry... After all, I did pretty much the same thing, didn't I? Ramble off, I mean." She appeared sheepish. She didn't exactly know what to say. She supposed she'd just go with whatever came out, hoping she didn't offend the other girl.

"I don't think you would really offend anyone, but then again I don't know many people so what do I know in the first place?" Her expression twisted into something disgruntled before it smoothed back over. "Um... anyway, do you know how to dance? I never really bothered to learn - I was always more interested in other things, and it wasn't really the sort of thing my family indulged in..." She trailed off again. She would wait for an answer, and she didn't want to cut into whatever the other girl decided to say. That was probably part of why she never got her opinion in since she always waited on others.

She tapped her fan nervously against her wrist as she examined her new acquaintance - she couldn't exactly call her a friend, since she'd only recently opened conversation with her and that would be a tad abrupt, she thought personally. She could never seem to escape her anxiety. But at least, at this moment, it was a bit less than usual.

Her eyes kept wandering. So many people…seemed that almost every student had arrived at the ballroom. She was more acquainted with the large, open room, instead of this crowded one. Hopefully Wyatt could be somewhere in the corners…and she may follow him, and spend a good night with him. Just the two.

Though making new acquaintances was always pleasant. Mars, as Lindsey had just decided, was a nice person. It wasn’t unusual for the badger to find others nice — though her new companion seemed great. She couldn’t help looking at Cash and Mars’s outfits and masks. They were just so nice…

“So far, I believe everything’s great!” she grinned. Just see, everybody’s having fun — well, maybe except a few. At least, she liked the ball — when she could attend it with the one…with the one she liked.

Speaking of that, where was Wyatt? Potentially he’s lurking somewhere…or socializing. Somehow Lindsey believed her lovely date was very sociable, and maybe even more better at making new friends than herself. She sometimes messed things up…but definitely not today.

“And yeah, I’m waiting for my date. You two as well?” grinning, she asked. She was rather curious to know about others’ dates. Though, Lindsey didn’t ask that out — quite rude, right?

Her eyes suddenly fell on someone. Wyatt. He was there, talking with someone — or with a girl. Who’s that? Who’s the lucky girl that caught her date’s eyes? What are they talking? She wondered about almost everything. No, it couldn’t be…

She recognized the girl. Autumn Ivy, if she hadn’t mistaken? The one who refused Leonard’s invitation, and made her friend felt a bit upset. Why’s she messing up with everyone whom she liked? With every friend of hers?

And was she talking pleasantly or quarreling with Wyatt? It seemed that they weren’t on very good terms…but, she couldn’t decide. She was too far from them to catch their conversation. However somehow she believed that her fellow badger made her date annoyed.

Slowly her attention came back to Cash and Mars, when she paid an apologetic smile to them. Though Lindsey had secretly decided, if her date and Autumn started quarreling or even fighting, she would definitely come to rescue.

Another ball.

Honestly, it seemed like the school's mass of students diffused any logic or caution the professors had... because that's what this event was for, the students.

Sometimes Selim wondered if wizards really were more idiotic than muggles when it came to self-preservation. It seemed that wizardkind as a whole thought magic made them invincible, therefore, not needing to exercise something as life-saving as caution.

At least this time the professors tried to do something about the threat hanging over the school, as they themselves had deemed it prudent to also be present in the ball.

Selim had heard about the disastrous Halloween ball from last year through the gossip vine, how hags had decided to come to the party as well, perhaps feeling left out of the festivities.

He rolled his eyes, now an icy blue from his new colored contact lenses.

Dressed up in his gothic-style outfit, he donned black on black, lightly accented by a cool silver. Like the blossom ball, he had a light combat shirt under it all. He doubted it would do much, but it was the thought that counted.

He fixed his skull-like raven mask over his face, revealing only his new piercing blue eyes, and then fitted his dark, feather-adorned tophat on top of his black-haired head. looking up from the ground to the mirror, he saw his reflection peer back, and with how dark his outfit was, he couldn't help but think back to that shadow being that had manifested not so long ago. The distorted foggy copy of himself that murdered Victor Moor.

A slight chill ran down his spine, and he closed his eyes, breathing out slowly as hauntingly familiar faces flashed across his vision, all staring at him, judging the one that had silenced their voices in the world.

Selim swallowed dryly, only to be snapped out of it by something rubbing against his leg. Looking down he saw a feline face peering back up at him. Kioshi.

The dark dappled cat meowed lightly, purring, and Selim couldn't help but smile at his quiet supporter.

Animals, they never judged, never cared about how stained their owner's hands were... they asked for nothing other than being given the basic necessities of life.

Selim loved animals, so much purer than filthy humans.

Bending down, he ran a gloved hand across his companions silky fur, speaking softly, voice echoing through his mask, giving it a haunting tone.

"No, no, Kioshi, I'm not bringing you to the ball, your life is too young to end in such a brutal way, at the hands of monsters." His eyes curled up in a smile, "Stay here, maybe roll around on Hana's bed." The Japanese-spoken words were hinted with mischief befitting of a raven.

The feline merely meowed in response, before watching him leave with sharp green eyes.

As Selim traveled down the halls to the ballroom, he watched the area around him with an attentive gaze. There were monsters roaming this castle, the professors said so themselves, and Selim could bring himself to believe such a statement with ease.

He'd always seen them even before that fateful announcement, even if the things he saw were fake or not.

The shadows always seemed to shift to him. Moving with an unknown purpose, distorted by his ill mind.

Upon arriving in the ballroom, he noticed that there were only a few party-goers milling about, he had probably been earlier then most.

Looking over the few students with frosty blue eyes, sharp as knives, he idly pulled out his pair of stainless steel chopsticks he had taken to carrying around with himself. He had gotten smarter, and no longer carried around knives with him, if he did he was at risk of being caught and punished (No muggle weapons in school, be). Though he still had some blades stored under his bed, there weren't as many as last year.

When he came back to the dorm over the summer, he found that the compartment he had made was still where he left it, hidden under the floorboards he had pulled up so long ago.

These chopsticks, though a tad sharper then usual, didn't technically count as weapons (by his logic anyway). If they did, then people would technically not be allowed to carry around pencils, normal utensils, anything mundane that could injure someone if used creatively.

Besides, you never knew when you might need to eat sushi.

He twirled the slim sticks of metal around dexterously. Taking to leaning against the wall by the entrance, as if guarding it.

He supposed he could count as some sort of unasked-for security. In this situation, he wasn't the one who posed an intent to harm innocents. He was the one to protect them.

It was a refreshing feeling.

Selim watched as more and more students streamed into the room, trying to take note of all the faces that passed him by. If any of them noticed his mildly eerie appearance, they didn't show it.

Students he didn't recognize, and some he did, scattered away from the entrance, and he idly clicked his chopsticks together. Absently he noted that they would be even better weapons if he coated them in poison... though then he couldn't use them to eat his favorite foods...

He stored the information away to examine at a later date.

Though, as he continued observing from a distance, he was looking for one face in particular.

@Vladimir Athanatos.

The words that the Ravenclaw had spoken to him those few months ago never left him. He still remembered when he asked the boy if he thought of Victor as an ally or friend.

Vlad had disagreed.

He implied he wouldn't care if the boy was torn apart by his classmates, perhaps even killed.

Now that that very thing had happened by Selim's own hands, he wondered if the answer would be the same.

A phantom feeling of sticky, red blood coating his hands made his fidgeting paused... No matter what anyone said, he was a murderer, even if they didn't know of his exploits over the summer.

It was likely anyone who was there on that day knew Victor was dead, that Selim had killed him. He hoped that wasn't the case, but he was never one to see things through rose-tinted lenses.

He pondered on the possibility that what Vlad had basically said was all simply a boast, that he had cared about Victor... and if that was so, did he see Selim as an enemy now?

Did he seek revenge?

The Ravenclaw didn't seem like the type, but who knew? Life was a masquerade, everyone pretended to be someone they weren't, painted themselves to be accepted or rejected by those around them.

No one truly wore their hearts on their sleeves, other than perhaps children.

...

He wanted to talk to the boy that had given him tea.

He just had to find him first.

Though, Selim wondered if he could follow through on his intentions... he was, for all intents and purposes, a coward.

...No matter, he'd have to see when the time came. He had to see if the chill down his spine, the feeling of being watched by something unknown, was just another figment of his imagination, or a reality.

And if so, what would he do when everything inevitably fell to hell.

He doubted he could have a chat with Vlad in the oncoming chaos that could quite possibly be unleashed upon the hapless students once more.

Perhaps he'd have to reschedule the conversation for a later date if he didn't find the boy at the ball soon.

Selim closed his eyes briefly, chopsticks snapping together with a sharp note of finality, and sighed, releasing what tension he could.

All of this was so...

'Troublesome'.

He hoped the Professors would stave off the monsters in the shadows tonight.

Or else this would all be such a drag.

She blushed slightly in embarrassment, only half of it covered by the mask. "I don't normally go to these sorts of things, so... I don't really know how I'm supposed to behave." She tapped the tessen repeatedly against her wrist, the harsh rapping chaining her to reality. Which may or may not be a good thing, depending on what happened.

He liked it?

It looked like something someone would grab on the way to an unimportant party when they realised the weather was colder than it actually was. The colours looked like someone had thrown up after eating a particularly large and variant meal. The flowers... Actually, the flowers were quite nice, Autumn would give him that.

She noted his small, hidden smile, and wondered the cause of it. Was her hostility the cause of it? Because that would be odd. She chose to not have any further discussion on that specific topic, knowing that if she were to talk more about it, it could turn into an argument, and this was not the time nor place for an argument.

Well, it wasn't until Starkey made the stupid choice of insulting her dress.

Sure, he may have been correct about it being basic, but come on, he was the one wearing the vomit flower jacket. He was one to talk. Also, creativity? He was wearing a plain silver mask! It was a plain silver mask with detailed and small cracks on it that Autumn quite liked the look of, but it was still a plain silver mask! Also, was there a higher power which automatically made her more creative in Autumn just because her name was Autumn? Because if there was, Autumn had certainly never heard of it.

However, the final straw was when he compared it to the first year wearing a moon costume.

Autumn was wearing a black dress with stars, suns, moons, constellations and solar eclipses on it! It was not a damn moon costume. It was not similar to the moon costume. It was not close to being similar to the moon costume. Besides, the dress was not her entire outfit. She was also wearing the owl mask, which she had really liked the look of. Her choker may have also had a moon on it, but Autumn liked moons. Moons represented intuition, which she had a lot of, secrets, which she had more than enough of, insight, which she would appreciate more of, and time, which she definitely did not have enough of. She was also wearing black boots, which both looked nice (in her opinion) and were comfortable. She had even put on lipstick and had done her hair.

She had gone through all the trouble to find the perfect outfit and she had. Her outfit had been perfect for her; they were comfortable, made her feel confident, generally looked alright and made her feel okay to be in her skin again.

And now they had been compared to a moon costume.

And Autumn knew. She knew that she had deserved it by insulting his jacket first, instead of keeping her mouth shut. She knew that she was getting too defensive over a single outfit. She knew that she was being overly emotional. She knew she should just make a witty comment and ignore the insult. She knew that this should not be her biggest worry in a ball which would probably catch on fire sometime in the next hour. She knew, but it still hurt.

So, she erased emotion from her face and looked at Wyatt with empty eyes. Empty was better than hurt. Empty was always better than hurt. It always had been.

"Yes," she chuckled, "you're probably right. So, who did you come her with?"

It didn’t take Maria long to find Thomas, as he found her. He came up to her, fully in black with his own mask on his face, saying her name as if he learned it through a casual introduction. His tone was calm, almost as if the boy who took his shirt off and swaggered about taunting everyone was all a bad fever dream. But she was not one to judge, nor did she know much about him to make conclusions. For now her mind was set on observing and making small talk but her guard was up - she knew she had to be careful.

Looking up at her date, who was still a few inches taller despite her choice of footwear, she gave him a small smile. “Thomas.” Despite his Phantom of the Opera-esque mask she could still distinguish his features. Upon closer inspection she found he was (for lack of a better word she was comfortable with using for him)… not ugly. But then again so was most of the Hogwarts student population.

“Nice to see you too.” Her tone mirrored his, but her genuineness peaked through. It wasn’t as if she was excited to see him after being thrown into the viper pit with him, but she was pleasantly surprised he actually showed up. Honestly she half-expected him to not be there at all, seeing as there was really no assurance that he would.

He complimented her dress, completing the checklist for the usual polite social greeting. “You don’t look so bad yourself.” A nice word for a nice word. It seemed that was how it would go.

Thomas was trying – that much she could guess but whether he was trying to fool her to trying to be on his best behavior she had no clue. Absentmindedly her left hand went to an inconspicuous pocket, well hidden underneath the material of her dress. It reminded her that her wand was there. Just in case.

The pair headed inside, and she followed his lead. Her eyes scanned the crowd for familiar faces. Well, more like one familiar face. But she didn’t want to think about it for now, lest she be even more nervous than she already was. They stopped by the drinks and snacks, and Thomas handed her a glass. She quietly received it with a ‘thank you’ and poured herself some pumpkin juice before replying to him. “I did, and while we’re being honest, I didn’t expect you to ask me either.” She tried to be just as blunt as he was, but her curiosity seemed evident.

”So I suppose you’ll let me ask why me of all people?” Her query came casual, almost as if she was trying not to scare off a wild animal. Raising the drink to her lips she cast him a nonchalant sideways glance. He was holding two more cups in his hand.

“Are you just thirsty or is there a second date, I should know about?” Before she could apply any sort of filter, Maria blurt the words out, trying to sound smart, as she always did. Internally she was worried. She didn’t exactly know the kind of crowd Thomas ran with, or if he hand any friends for that matter, but she had a feeling she was going to find out.

Madeleine's brown eyes were torn from the pretty girl dancing when she saw movement in her peripheral vision. Surprisingly enough, her mask did not hinder her sense that someone was approaching. The brunette's attention was now captured by a tall blonde boy who was walking towards her. The purpose in his walk suggested he must be the one she was looking for. "You," he seemed to take a deep breath, and she thought a bit self-consciously of her scent. Right, the perfume. So he had used it to track her down after all. "Must be... Madeleine Nakamura." His voice was pleasant, different from the French accent she was so used to. To be fair, a lot of the boys here had nice accents, but his accent was accompanied by a charming grin as he bowed to her. Maddie felt her cheeks heating up as she curtsied in response. She did not expect a Hogwarts boy to have such class.

"Yes, you can call me Maddie if you want to," she confirmed, offering the alternative of her name since they would be spending the evening together. As he introduced himself as Vladimir, the young girl got a better look at him. He was dressed so smartly, in his black vest and suit jacket. The silver buttons were a nice touch, and the white shirt beneath as well. But on top of everything else was the fact that he himself was handsome. Blonde hair and blue eyes as promised, an athletic build. He had been honest in the letter he sent her, maybe even a bit modest. She definitely would not mind spending her evening with him.

"I look forward to learning all there is to know about you... Tu as de beaux yeux." His words were followed by a charming laugh, which made Madeleine giggle and show off a lovely smile of her own. Yes, his pronunciation was awful, but it was really cute of him to try and she definitely understood what he was going for. "Thank you. You've got a very handsome smile, and a lot of charm," she replied in her perfect French, offering a compliment she wouldn't have had the confidence to say if she thought he could understand her. Then in English, "Thank you. I was really pleased to receive your invitation. I'm excited to get to know you as well." She made it seem like she was directly translating what she had said, but these were in fact two different sentiments.

His (supposed) struggle with French made her more aware of the fact that she would be expected to speak mainly in English tonight. She was actually quite fluent, but her lack of practice with native speakers had led to an embarrassing mix-up of words that past summer, so now she was often second-guessing herself when it came to phrasing. Cassanora usually reassured her about saying the right things, but she was on her own tonight. No matter. She really did need to regain her confidence with the language.

"That reminds me." Madeleine's eyes widened a little bit as he waved his wands about between them. His hands disappeared behind her head, brushing through the bun atop her head, only for them to reappear holding a corsage. She gasped softly at the sight, then her eyes roved him for his wand. Was he capable of wandless magic? And non-verbal? How impressive! "Muggle magic. I did not know what you would be wearing."

Again, Maddie felt her face heat up, but this time in slight embarrassment. Right. Muggle magic. That was a thing. She vaguely remembered the concept of a muggle magic show, recalling a memory of watching one on a childhood friend's television. She gladly accepted the corsage, placing it onto her left wrist with a small smile on her lips. She did not mind that it didn't necessarily match. There was a certain beauty in the way it stood out from the rest of her outfit. "It's gorgeous. I didn't expect more gifts after that lovely perfume you sent me. I'm sorry I didn't think to bring you anything," she said apologetically, raising her eyes to his again as she adjusted the mask on her face. She was not used to wearing it.

More importantly, though, she wasn't used to being showered in gifts like this. It took a significant effort to not be grinning from ear-to-ear at this point, instead composing herself to have a modest smile. Wait until Cassanora heard about what she was missing out on! Vladimir Athanatos was proving to be a perfectly lovely date for the evening!

"Would you like to dance?"

Those magic words made Maddie's smile grow as she nodded. "I would love to dance," she said, slightly tilting her head as she looked up at him. Her ears picked up on the shift in music to something slower. "Your letter said you're an heir to an aristocrat, so have you been taught all sorts of dance?" she asked hopefully, as they headed towards the dance floor. She would accept his hand if he offered it to her. Dance was her passion in life, and having a partner who knew how would make this night all the more memorable.
TL;DR: Be romanced and oblivious, happily accepting the invitation to dance

Viola was continued to look around. One could say it was as if she was a predator searching for a prey.

She found several.

However, all had dates.

She did find one that she found more attractive than the others. She didn't know what set him out. Maybe it was his icy blue eyes, charming smile and white hair. Maybe it was the look in his eyes, which suggested that he was more strategic than he let on. Most would not have been able to see that secret look within a glimpse. It was the look of a mastermind. Viola honestly doubted that she would have noticed if she herself had not been one. In her own humble opinion, of course.

The only problem was that he was dancing with someone else.

Viola watched as he spun her around. The boy clearly had some level of experience with ballroom dancing. Thankfully, Viola did too. Indeed, she was well-versed in waltz, foxtrot and quickstep. Although she would never flaunt it. She most certainly would not.

Finally, she found time to look at the boy's dance partner.

She had blonde highlights, too many rings, a mask that looked like it was straight out of a dollar store and she looked oh-so old with her sharp features and tall height. Viola could barely keep herself from exclaiming the word "basic" across the room. However, she found that she felt nice enough that day to not embarrass the poor girl. With that face, the girl was going to need as much luck as she could, and who was Viola to judge? She just couldn't relate.

From the girls mannerisms, Viola could guess that she was younger than both the boy and herself. The white-haired boy had gone for someone younger. He looked like he was having fun with her, sure, but a first year? And one this basic and simple? She seemed too easy for him.

Viola shrugged internally. It was his choice who he had danced with, and who he did not. Although Viola would be lying if she said that she did not at least slightly judge the boy's decision.

After all, what king wanted a pawn when he could have a queen?

Which was what led Viola to wait patiently for their dance to end and walk towards the white-haired boy when it did.

Now, Viola was not used to being the pursuer. In most to all cases, she had been the one pursued, and she had grown accustomed to things working that way. It was the natural order of things. However, it seemed that the same could be said for the boy.

If there was something Viola was not used to, it was approaching others. She was not familiar with how to "make the first move" as to speak. She did not like trying new things. The only case in which she would was to get what she wanted. And, currently, she wanted this boy.

Thus, when she finally arrived in front of the boy, she looked straight into those icy blue eyes and spoke with a sly smirk and a raised eyebrow.

"Was that your date? Because you can do better."
