Physical Description: The first striking feature of Madeline's is the glimmer of mischief that dazzles in her eyes when you look at her. Like she's always forming her next plan from the moment you lay eyes on her. It's playful though. Tinged with fun and hijinks rather than malfeasance.
She's tanned, average height with golden locks that have almost whitish blonde streaks running through. The kind of girl who looks like she spends all her summer days outside in the garden, dangling from trees rather than cooped up indoors with a book (yuck!). Her affinity for spending all her free time out in the sunshine easily explains the smattering of freckles that adorn the bridge of her nose, like she's been tickled by the sunbeams themselves. It also explains the penny-sized scar on her knee from a climbing feat gone wrong. The scar could have been healed away in moments, especially as both her parents are experienced healers, yet the girl had pouted and pleaded to keep it. It was proof she'd almost made it to the top and the best of bragging rights with her friends.
Mental Description: Madeline, or Maddie, Mads... anything but her actual name, is bright and bubbly. She likes to make others feel included and although she can be somewhat of a prankster, she doesn't like to make others feel like they're the subjects of her jokes. So far in her life, she's been loyal to a fault. Whether that's to her family, her friends, or her best friend - her owl, Ernie.
There's a gentleness to her being, shaped by someone who has grown up needing for nothing, but not tinged with any of the pride that could go along with it. The world has been kind to her and she's kind in return to it. She has a strong affinity for animals, company, picking daisies out in the meadows and a really good cauldron cake.
Biography: The youngest of three. Whispers of 'shall we slide down the banisters then, Kit?' to her sometimes apprehensive co-conspirator, her older brother, as he would traipse carefully through the halls of Montford manor and she would follow his steps with her excited dash. Unbridled laughter at sneaking a revolting Bertie Bott's bean into her aunt Matilda's pastry at an evening gala and not being able to suppress further giggles at her subsequent 'lemon face'. Madeline's childhood so far has been one of ease and light in the world of regality. When Polly and Christopher Montford were expecting their third child, they surely never expected a presence like Madeline to enter it.
The Montfords are quiet, controlled and full of composure - typical traits of a primarily Slytherin family. They're known for their ambition, with a fair few healers in the family. Whilst she grew up around closed books, however, Maddie has always been the open one. Their 'little burst of sunshine' as her mother had once said with a quirk of a smile, a sentiment that is shared in the family even if it's shared a little less openly.
First Instance of Magic: If there's one poorer trait of Madeline's, it's the fact that she isn't particularly patient. A trait that manifested itself at the ripe age of five when the spotlight shone on her sister's first instance of magic and whilst the family celebrated the seven year old, Maddie pouted... and whined... and would not stop asking her sister if she had a secret to how she herself could manifest the magic out of her body (even if she knew very well that wasn't how it worked).
But like most things on earth, life had other plans for little Maddie and said plans happened to fall on one of their family days out in Oxford when she was six. The sloped, ivy-covered, roof of their local apothecary was the young girl's dream climbing challenge - so what luck she had in the summer when her parents were distracted talking to a neighbour.
This was it. Her chance. Tiny, determined hands made ample work of the climb, with the look of confidence about her that made a true Montford. It was when her concerned parents looked back (and then... up?) at the girl climbing the wall and Madeline herself could almost peer over the ledge that led to the slope that the worst happened. Madeline lost her footing. With a horrified gasp from the onlookers, Madeline tumbled the few feet down… and then it was as if something cushioned her fall. She was used to scrapes, having to sit with her parents to tend to her wounds in the hours afterwards, for a fall like this, it wasn’t tremendously high - just enough to startle and cause a cut in normal circumstances. Except… as she lay on the ground, blinking in astonishment, there wasn’t a single scratch on her. An act that would normally have got the girl into immense trouble and a stern reprimand from both her parents became a moment that the entire family would celebrate… albeit with a more watchful eye whenever they went to town again.
