From poor run-down house in Scotland and lives with grandmother who is loving but poor. Her parents are dead with her grandmother as her only living relative to take care of her. Her grandmother also doesn’t understand the concept of magic, only “black magic” and thought the entire thing was nonsense. Denise still wanted to go so she lies to her grandmother that she got a scholarship to an elite boarding school and maintains a facade due to her grandmother’s illness and bigotry.
