Physical Description: Nevan is 4'6", and is a bit slimmer than average, because he is a very picky eater. His skin is pale from spending too much time indoors. Faint freckles dot his cheeks and nose, accompanied by two or three moles visible on his face, the rest hidden underneath his clothes. His features are youthful, his face still round and smooth. His dark brown, almost black eyes are narrow and framed by long lashes. His hair is around medium length, slightly tousled, with long bangs. It's dark brown in colour. He wears a chain earring on one ear, which used to belong to his mother. She gave it to him on his 11th birthday so he'd have something of hers.
Mental Description: Nevan is quite smart for his age, sometimes praised for his sharp mind, but not as much as some other children may be. He's ambitious and determined, working steadily towards his goals and not giving up on them. He wishes to become a powerful and intelligent wizard, one who'll be worth remembering, but he also doesn't want to be constantly talked about or famous. He's not used to getting attention by many people at once, so he may come off as a bit awkward, quiet or even shy at times. However he also has a natural talent for reading people, picking up on their emotions and manners easily. He makes sure to alter his behaviour to that of the person he's interacting with, to make a good impression on them. If he has to be slightly cunning to do that, he won't hesitate. He can change how he acts depending on the person, and he makes sure to do that as much as possible, not that much to be liked, but more so to be respected. Disrespect is not something he enjoys dealing with. He knows how to use his knowledge to his advantage, figuring out people's strengths and weaknesses and if necessary, using them against them. That makes him fairly confident in himself, he doesn't boast about it, but he doesn't doubt his ability to get what he wants. At the same time, his curiosity may be considered one of his weaknesses. Even if he knows he shouldn't do something, if he's simply too curious, he will do it. He likes having as much knowledge as possible, not just to have it or because he wants to be considered smart, but because it can be a useful tool. He isn't the loud, brash sort of ambitious, he doesn't go around telling people what he's going to achieve. Instead he's precise, patient and watchful. He'd rather win by outthinking someone rather than facing them head on, but that doesn't mean he's scared to do it if he has to. He’s loyal, but selectively so — his trust and friendship isn't easy to earn, as he's spent most of his earlier life alone, but once someone does earn it, he'll protect them with his life.
Biography: Both of Nevan's parents are pure-blood wizards with successful careers, even if they aren't really well-known or 'famous', as he's heard some people boast about being. Both his mother and his father believed strongly in preparation and discipline. As soon as he could read, they arranged multiple private tutors to teach him history, theory and even etiquette of the magical society. They wanted him to be capable and smart so he could be successful when he grew up. The lessons could often be exhausting, but Nevan didn't mind, since his parents were always there, encouraging him and praising him when he did well. They expected greatness from him, but they didn't let that get in their way of loving him and showing their care for him. Their high expectations were the foundations for his ambitiousness, and they taught him early on that success was something to be pursued, not passively awaited.
His childhood home was filled with books, it was a place that had carefully constructed routines, some of which he still tries to follow, and detailed lesson plans. He grew up surrounded by knowledge, and while he sometimes became restless or annoyed by the expectations, he came to greatly appreciate being well-prepared.
However, being an only child in such an environment, left him pretty isolated. He didn't go to any prep school for young wizards, and he didn't have the chance to meet kids of his age. The only exception were the few children who lived nearby. Those interactions were awkward at first, but he learned to adapt as he observed them, picking up on their body language and emotions to make sure his behaviour was appropriate. Despite those times though, he still never felt fully at ease with the group, barely even considering them friends, with how rare and stilded their conversations were. The other children were also being tutored and didn't spend time with others often, it was to be expected.
First Instance of Magic: The first time he accidentally used magic was when he was around 5 years old. One of his tutors, a stern, no-nonsense wizard, was quizzing him on the very basics of magical theory that pure-blood children learn. He asked question after question, giving him no time to recover from his answers and pressuring him to not make mistakes. Usually, Nevan thrived under pressure, but this time he stumbled over one of his answers. Then got the next one wrong.
His tutor seemed disappointed, mumbling something about 'wasted potential', and Nevan got mad, his hands clenching at his sides both because he was embarrassed and because he didn't want to disappoint his parents. And even more, he hated someone thinking that he wasn't good enough. It frustrated him. He was glaring at his tutor with as much anger as his small body could fit. He couldn't handle the idea of being a disappointment, of wasting his potential and not being able to pursue his goals.
The heavy quill in his tutor's hand suddenly shattered, the book on the desk by him flying open to the exact page that held the answer he had gotten wrong.
Nevan hadn't meant to do it, but he didn't apologise. He was proud of himself, because not only had he done magic, but his magic had proved a point.
When his parents heard about it, they were proud of him as well. And they got him a new tutor once he asked.
