Courtney has always been a pretty little girl, rosy cheeks and soft blonde waves earning her countless pinches of affection and coos of "aw, Courtney Marie" from her family members. Everyone considers her quite fortunate for inheriting her father's big eyes, a charming hazel shade dominated by a pretty green hue and flecked with light brown around the pupil. However as she grows older, the irises blossom with more brown flecks, giving her more of a swampy tinge, but her doting parents insist that when the light catches them just right, they're just as beautiful as the day she was born. She's also inherited the regally straight nose from her mother, an echo of the far ties to wealthy pure-blooded families now diluted by modernity and her mother's profound love for a Muggle businessman.
Despite her slim frame, Courtney is quite tall for her age. She stands at about 5 feet, thanks to her well trained posture and high-held head. She has a habit of spending all the time she can lounging in her family's rooftop garden, earning her a dusting of freckles across her narrow little shoulders and a tan across her straight nose, much to her mother's dismay.
Courtney has been a sweetheart since the moment she stepped into the world, charming and a sweet-talker, fiercely loyal and talented at making people trust her. She likes to insist that these traits make up for her lacklustre attention to schoolwork, earning an eye roll from her argumentatively academic father and a huff of near amusement from her mother's regal nose.
She doesn't enjoy disappointing her parents, though. So every time she groans and pouts about being reminded to study, she'll return to her bedroom and quietly shut the door, seating herself at her desk as she opens a textbook. This has fortunately lead to the absorption of quite a good bit of knowledge, even though she'd prefer playing with her cat or hanging out with her friends. She's quite a social creature, an extroverted little bugger, according to her gramps, always saying hi to the mailman or striking up conversations with the elderly couple next door. Reinforced by her polite manners, she doesn't view these interactions as an inconvenience, a source of sheer joy instead. Even though her parents often describe her as a sly girl, citing the way she tries to charm anyone she meets for a candy here, a pound there, she's still sweet, not bad intentions in her. However, she's often scolded for bearing a hint of pretentiousness, her upper lip stiff and posture straight for a girl of her age. She sees her self respecting attitude as a good thing, earning a scoff and light flick to the ear from her mother.
Courtney's spent her whole childhood in the lovely, red-brick, Wetherby townhouse her mother called home as a girl. Housing her parents, Hogwarts graduate Deanna and Muggle businessman Ryan, along with her mother's parents, affectionately coined Gramps and Granny, Courtney grew up in a charming upper middle-class household. The only fruit of her parents late-blossoming marriage, she's been smothered by love and care since she was just a glint in her father's eye. Her days spent attending a private primary school before returning home to her tabby cat and smiling mother shaped her into a family-oriented young girl. Sitting on the front doorstep with her connect the dots book of the week, she waited for her father to return from his corner office job in Central Leeds, usually resulting in a big hug and spin before being led inside.
Her parents are proud to say they gave her the ordinary, safe, loving childhood all parents dream of, surrounded by people always doting on her, yet keeping her humble and raising her to be a well-rounded, sweet young woman. Despite her fierce loyalty to friends landing her in trouble at school sometimes and her need to be right rivalling that need of her father, she was kind at heart, and what more could a parent ask for? She made sure her mom returned her library books on time and helped Granny with the temperamental gardenias and hydrangeas on the roof, helped with dinner and always fessed up when she knocked Gramps cigar off the table. A darling girl.
It was a painfully average Saturday morning in Wetherby, the sun shining and the people polite. Like most weekend mornings, 10 year old Courtney spent it on the oversized wicker chair next to her Granny at the farmers market in the park, watching as the grey-haired woman bartered off loaves of bread and bouquets of flowers, a regular Martha Stewart. Courtney had been especially bored this morning; the excitement of summer break now gone following the family's trip to Canada, exhausted from her poor nights sleep thanks to a party down the street, the poor girl was pouting.
Just as she was stewing on thoughts of how to pass the time until her Granny would pack up the canopy and invite Courtney to pick out some chocolate from the stall next to them, the young girl caught sight of a wispy yellow butterfly atop a particularly large bouquet of tulips and white gardenias. Thinking to herself about how beautiful it was, Courtney sighed and snuggled down deeper into the wicker chair, eyes shutting as she hoped for a nap. Sitting in silence for a few seconds, she opened one eye to find the butterfly now resting on her folded hands atop the waist of her light blue skirt. A grin spread across her face as she lifted the hand closer to examine the butterfly, half expecting it to fly away. But no, it stayed, gently fluttering its wings.
Sleepily admiring the delicate creature, a half dozen came to rest on Courtney's other hand and slumped body. Before long, her blue and red tank top was barely visible due to the fluttering little yellow bodies now calling the young girl home. By the time Granny sold her last loaf of bread and turned to get Courtney, the butterflies erupted off of her, elegantly escaping the canopy as quickly as they appeared. The short drive home was silent, Courtney simply pressing her forehead against the window sill as she watched a tiny yellow butterfly follow the red car home.
