Physical Description:
Maelys stands taller than average for an eleven-year-old at four foot ten. The young witch has a long, gangly build that's not well suited to sports or other related physical activities. Her hair is equally long, falling in shiny, dark waves to her lower back. She refuses to cut it aside from sporadic trims for maintenance and hair health. It's usually kept away from her face either half-up or in a ribbon-tied ponytail. Mae's tanned skin is shiny and smooth aside from the interruption of an occasional pimple or two. Her rounded features create an innocent look, as if the girl is younger than her actual age.

Mental Description:
A childhood full of waiting has left Maelys with a boundless desire to experience everything, all at once. Mae is easily impressed but, also, sharper than she appears. You wouldn't be able to tell from the surface but this quick-witted witch's internal world is fast-paced, colorful, and full of imagination. She might seem a bit detached from her physical form but that is because her brain is always jumping around from this to that, yes to no, problem to solution at 100 miles a minute. Sometimes there isn't brainpower left to control the expression on her face.

Everything is intense in Maelys-land. Her high points are ecstatic and her low points are anxiety-driven spirals. Everything is very fast and very dramatic. Mae is the type of girl who likes to think about what others are thinking about. She's empathetic, bright, and compassionate, yes, but she cares a lot about pleasing others to a fault. In her mind, it's a way of showing her value both in virtue and in talent. External validation has this girl in a chokehold. She's very fixated on the subconscious and unrealistic fantasy of being loved unanimously.

Mae is a hard worker, sure, and quite tenacious. Still, her ambition precedes her. There's no way she can be everything she wants. Maelys is an introvert by nature but you usually can't tell. She's always apologizing for people, joking around with her friends, and listening to others' problems instead of dealing with her own. It's very clear that Maelys lacks self-awareness, something that is to be expected given her young age. She is still figuring out who she is and what she likes without the influence of others.

Biography:
The Delarosa family’s entrance into Japan occurred somewhere during the early 20th century. Opportunities for Filipino immigrants were limited in Japan. Bituin and Alon Delarosa moved to Osaka along with their twin daughters: Althea, a witch, and Angela, a squib. The dragonkeepers chose to raise their daughters without a disparity in treatment. Althea, who was 7 when she came to Japan, was an early bloomer. She had already experienced her first instance of magic in the Philippines. Despite this, Bituin and Alon made the conscious decision to keep her out of magical schooling and, instead, tutor her at home with her sister. They did not wish to cause a familial imbalance where one daughter held power over the other as it could disrupt the little harmony left in their lives. Furthermore, Wizarding world tutors were expensive and, therefore, not easy to come by given that both parents were out of work. Galleons were scarce and there were more dire needs to fulfill than teaching Althea magic. Both daughters were taught by their parents about the magical world but neither had a wand nor learned how to cast spells. It was for the better in their mind.

Delarosa Grill was founded by Bituin and Alon in 1946 at the start of the Japanese economic boom. Neither had prior experience in restauranteering but it was an easier business to enter into than finding dragonkeeping positions in the metropolitan, mixed muggle-wizarding region of Kyoto. The restaurant served mainly Filipino dishes prepared with wizarding-style techniques. It was particularly acclaimed for its self-grilling charms and, for birthdays, performances by levitating, singing produce, a favorite of the magical lot.

The restaurant’s magical elements were available for nearly a decade (until 1954) before Hyeol was caught in a dual that left him blinded permanently and on the path for early retirement. Althea and Angela were 26 at that point and had been working in Delarosa Grill since its founding. Neither twin could practice magic so all magical elements were removed. This outraged the wizarding customers who did not wish to support an establishment run by lowlife squibs. Two years later, the restaurant became a muggle establishment in order to maintain sufficient patronage.

In 1958, Althea’s marriage estranged her from her sister and the restaurant. Her husband of choice was a pureblood wizard from the Sentou family line. Because of her pureblood witch status, she was a suitable wife in high wizarding culture. It was the first decision she made where Angela was not able to follow in her footsteps. Most purebloods did not wish to be associated with a squib. Althea, as she found out, could put on airs if so desired. She could get away with anything— assuming she said she was a witch from a pureblooded legacy. Not having a wand or a full-time magical job were attractive features for a housewife of the 1950s, as one would assume. It was rare that anyone questioned it. Rather, they chose to assume that she was an embodiment of the “traditional woman” and praised her husband for finding such a treasure.

Angela was married the year after Althea left to the new, muggle head chef of Delarosa Grill. They had three sons, Juan (b. 1960), Cesar (b. 1965), and Gabriel (b. 1967), all of whom lacked magical ability. The three grew up well, attended muggle school for the required years, and then began work at the restaurant as expected.

Kyle, the fourth son of Angela, was different from the rest. He was born 10 years after Gabriel in the year 1977 and, when he was 5 years old, he had a rather explosive tantrum— literally. With each toddler shout, another flame latched onto the Delarosa residence, engulfing it slowly until the outburst died down. This was the first of several unfortunate incidents where. Without wishing or intending for anything to happen, the youngest child’s uncontrolled emotions elicited problematicly tangible reactions from the environment around him. He was the problem child of the lot, similar to his aunt had been when they were younger. Angela, having knowledge of the wizarding world, recognized this phenomenon. The magical gene had pulled through in all of its chaos and disaster. Surely enough, when his 7th birthday came, storm petrels took him to Makhoutokoro for the first time.

Kyle Delarosa neither excelled nor floundered in his studies. His robes remained a consistent shade of rosy pink throughout the years with little fluctuation. The prejudices against both muggle-borns, as he was considered, and non-Japanese people held him back in a socially intense environment. It did not help that he wasn’t an outspoken kid. He was often left eating lunch in the corner alone, isolated from his wealthier, more well-adapted peers.

Because of this, Kyle was more than eager to leave school after the obligatory years were over. He did not believe himself to be capable of excelling in any of the further education paths offered by Makhoutokoro. His 5th year had been a case of near failure on many of his exams. This surely proved that he was incapable of studying more.

The young wizard resigned himself to working in the restaurant with his brothers despite his lack of satisfaction. Despite his magical abilities, he had failed to bring change to the family. They were not as poor as they had been upon arrival in the country but still uncomfortably near the poverty line. Delarosa Grill was in operation but much of its renown had faded over the years. He was worthless unless he took action.

Kyle came to a realization through this. Unlike blood status or ethnicity, financial status was changeable. He, as the only non-retired magic user in the family, was capable of it. It was in the year 2000 that Kyle first began his research on producing counterfeit currency secretly and, by 2002, he was a self-made millionaire in the most literal sense: using his wand to create falsified galleons in the restaurant storage room.

It was by these illicit means that he and his wife, Yuna, a muggle, were able to move around from country to country without limitations. That way, it was less likely that any of the various ministries would catch on to his illegal use of magic.

Kyle was eventually apprehended by the Ministry of Magic on the morning of February 9th, 2017 at his penthouse in Clifford where he was living with his wife and 4-year-old daughter full-time. The downside of having committed fraud in so many different countries was that it increased his Azkaban sentence by tenfold, ending in 14 years of jail time.

With her husband absent and nearly of the family assets repossessed, Yuna was without many options. Returning to Japan was out of the question given the shame that her husband’s criminal record would bring. Clifford was rather challenging for a single mother who worked as a hairdresser and did not yet speak fluent English. The remaining option was moving back to her hometown.

Unlike Kyle, Yuna's family was originally Japanese. Her parents resided in an apartment complex in the city of Nagoya with room enough to house both herself and her daughter comfortably.

Maelys grew up with little to no contact to the magical world. It was all a fairytale like the ones her mother would tell her before bed. It was her best effort to raise a magical child as a muggle. Maelys’s grandparents did not know anything aside from their muggle realities so Yuna was left with the responsibility. The stories were remnants of what Kyle told her about being wizard. It was not much to work with (covering only the information that did not breach the Statute of Secrecy.) In a world that demonized Kyle Delarosa, it was important to Yuna to have Maelys love him as much as she did.

Maelys was a well-rounded student throughout her muggle school career. The young witch managed to integrate with her classmates despite her introversion. She was never considered “popular,” although she was held in good regard for her academic skills and friendly, easygoing nature. Teachers lauded her for her responsibility and ambition so much that she was repeatedly made class president.

That was not enough for Maelys. She studied hard and pleased those around her during the day but every night she dreamed of magic and fairytales. 11th birthday… She knew that much. Her father had told her mother when he left, who, consequently, informed her of the date on which she would receive her acceptance letter to Hogwarts, hopefully. Given her father’s record, there was the possibility it was all a lie.

First Instance of Magic:
Maelys was approximately 3 and a half and, by her definition, that made her a big kid. She sat with her legs sprawled out on the cool marble of their Cardiff residence's kitchen. Her mother and father were conversing quietly in the living room, leaving the young girl very much unsupervised. She pulled herself to a stand using a drawer handle.

Mae had been walking independently for a long time at this point so she stepped forward confidently. What was in the drawers? The young witch was tall for her age but could not yet see at counter-height. She knew her mother was keeping a cake on that shelf. Her hands were just a few inches short of reaching it.

The idea clicked into her brain quickly, gaze resting on the drawer handles. Ever so carefully, Maelys put her right foot onto the lowest one. Then her left. Suddenly, Mae was just a grab away from reaching the chocolate cake. Her foot slipped, twisting under her weight. She should have fallen directly to the floor, making a large, incriminating bang as she fell. That did not happen. Maelys' limbs seemed to figure themselves out as she landed gently on her feet with no more than a small bump. Maybe she shouldn't climb any more counters...
