note: i intend to make mina half-veela (it relates to why her mother disappeared and i can further delve on that after i go through the application process, i've only kept it vague because i haven't gone through that yet!), i was unaware this was an option when joining, i have no intention of her being truly pureblooded but i shall write for now for her to be so :-) thank you for the guidance!
note 2: i have her half-veela backstory already written separately, it will be expanded on after validation! her mom does disappear AFTER she receives her letter, but for the sake of clarification and simplicity, i've decided to rewrite it as her leaving slightly before. :-)
Physical Description: Mina is as graceful and beautiful as they come, a curious blend of Scottish-Japanese. She has a lithe frame and carries herself with her head held up high and her back straightened as though it had been engraved in her brain for it to be so. The young girl wears oval-shaped glasses with a thick frame that sit comfortably on the bridge of her nose. She has soft, ivory skin, and her natural hair is blonder than the colour of a unicorn foal, though she frequently dyes it various shades of whatever black she can find to match the shade of her birth father. In times of greater stress, like studying for exams, Mina tends to forget about her hair, and others will be able to witness the shades of blonde growing out of her roots. She has two moles, one underneath her right eye and another placed opposite, lower on her left cheek between her nose and mouth. Her clothing is typically very tidy, and there is an underlying scent of clean laundry, lavender, and vanilla that carries its way around her.
Mental Description: The young Sinclair is considerably perceptive and empathetic. Having spent much of her early childhood isolated from her peers, Mina has been taking time to learn how to navigate friendships better. While her upbringing has caused her to be somewhat sheltered when it comes to human interaction, causing some people to be confused by her antics, she has grown into a genuinely kind young witch.
She’s curious, playful, occasionally found in mischief–a trait inherited from her father–and good-hearted. Though she is naturally gifted with poise, her true strength lies in her emotional intelligence and ability to sympathise with others. She senses feelings instinctively and offers comfort without a fuss. Unfortunately, this sensitivity can sometimes cause environments to become overwhelming, leading to her struggles with frustration and containing her anger when pushed too far. Her father has been working with her steadily to guide her actions responsibly, but only time can teach her levelheadedness.
Biography: Mina (美永, meaning “eternal beauty”) Sinclair was born in the affluent Stockbridge, located in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is the only child of her parents, Cailean (Kairen 海蓮) and Moira Sinclair. Her early life was filled with love and attentiveness; her parents were a devoted pair, full of warmth, and with like none other. Her father, a magical historian with a taste for adventure, doted on her endlessly.
Her mother, Moira Sinclair (née McDougall), was a beautiful Scottish witch who carried herself with an elegance that greatly contrasted with her lover’s. In a similar sense, Mina carries her poise from her. The elder woman was somewhat regarded as an Auror at the Ministry of Magic. Most notable for her commanding presence and graceful demeanour, she left an impression wherever she went. There was… this uncanny ability to disarm a room with nothing more than eye contact or a measured smile, these qualities that served her well in interrogation rooms and high-stakes duels alike.
Mina was often kept home during her early years, as her mother believed it was safest. Her mother believed she offered structure. She was drowned with books and toys to keep her occupied, while her father tried to keep the whimsical side of her life alive. Thus, this created a sort of “spoiled child” exterior for the majority of her childhood due to her lack of outside socialisation, as per her mother’s request. There were countless arguments from both sides, her mother pleading to keep her safe, and her father arguing that she needs to make friends outside of the home.
Life continued this way until they finally agreed, and she attended primary school. There was no doubt she wasn’t anything like the other children there; she was odd, withdrawn from shyness. Though it was there that she learned to carry herself with more dignity and communicate healthily with others.
As she aged, she did so with great dignity. She became the charming centre of attention, a diligent student as well. Her mother watched as this occurred, keeping an eye closely on her as her anxieties grew, but she stayed firm by her side until the age of 11.
Mina can recall the day almost perfectly, her father pleading his wife to stay, and her mother insisting it was for their daughter’s sake. Moira had made her way to her daughter’s room, brushing her hair back with her index finger and smiling. She had told her that she’d be leaving on a business trip, and that it was unknown whether or not she’d return.
The truth, as whispered in silence to protect it, was much greater than that. Moira sought to find others who knew how to preserve the life she helped build. Whether she succeeded or whether she simply ran is a question neither Mina nor her father has the answer to. At home, her father brushed it off as an extended business trip at first, even as letters stopped arriving on their doorstep and her mother’s faint scent of freshly baked goods faded from the hallway. As for Mina, she believed it, growing up in a world carefully constructed to keep her safe.
First Instance of Magic: It was at the age of four years old when Mina’s magical ability first presented itself, loud and unmistakably. The winter had overtaken the garden of the Sinclair manor, and she had been watching the frost bloom across the panes of their glasshouse while her parents had watched her intently nearby. Despite her inability to effectively communicate her emotions, she was empathetic and had commented on how “It’s a wee cold, the glass... does it get cold like us?” as she traced her finger against the patterns.
However, the moment her fingertips brushed against the chilled surface, there came a small crack, and her parents’ ears perked. A small flame, weak, imperfect, but prevalent, had found its way attempting to “warm” the glass from the small girl’s hands. Her mother shot from the garden bench she was sitting upon and reached towards her daughter to hold her hands, feeling the apparent warmth emitting from her hands afterwards, shooting a look of concern towards her father, who merely chuckled at the event.
It was expected, of course, for her to show some magical ability. Yet, it was that moment when her mother decided it was best to keep her away from the other children until she had learn to keep the abilities she had to herself.
