Martín Thiago de Alarcón Villca was born on June 20, 2008, in Cusco, Peru. His birth coincided with the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year and a day considered to be the rebirth of the sun. This timing led to his childhood nickname of "Inti," the name of the Incan sun god and a combination of the last syllable of his first name and the initial sound of his second.
He was born into a privileged wizarding family, the result of the union between two pureblood lines that was not without some controversy. Martín's father was of the de Alarcón family from Spain which can trace its origins to the conquest of Alarcón by King Alfonso VIII in 1184. The family was known for its research endeavors and members of the family were amongst the first to volunteer to sail to the New World, enticed by its undiscovered mysteries. When he was 9, Martín's father was sent to Peru where he was able to live with relatives that had immigrated centuries prior. This was common practice for members of the family as there was a belief that Castelobruxo was a superior research institution to Beauxbatons.
Martín's mother was a Villca, a family belonging to the indigenous Q'ero ethnic group. In Quechua, villca meant "sacred" in and the name was partially derived from Vilcabamba, the capital of the Neo-Inca State where the family resided until its conquest by the Spanish conquistador Martin Hurtado de Arbieto in 1572. Modern anthropologists posit that the Q'ero are the direct descendants of the Inca and were the last vestiges of resistance against the Spanish invasion. Q'ero mythology itself suggests their ancestors defended themselves with the aid of local mountain deities called apus who summoned earthquakes and rockslides to hinder the Spanish invaders.
