The Volkov's are an extremely powerful, highly feared family in Russian magical society that garners them respect and generations of Nikolai's family have attended Durmstrang since the beginning of its founding. His family have always been synonymous with dark magic, specialising in spell creation, and believe that wizarding blood should remain pure and unpoluted by muggles, but he couldn't disagree more. His parents names are Mikhail Volkov and Myrene Volkov and he has 4 older brothers. Being the black sheep of the family he was thrilled at the chance to go to Durmstrang and be away from his parents even if he would inevitable be bound back to them like his brothers who all left at 15 to pursue the family career. Nikolai grew up with magic tutors that trained him for attending Durmstrang along with his parents and siblings and he was raised to follow his families tradition of entering the family business and involving himself in their shady workings.
Nikolai like all the Volkov children was taught to be seen but never heard and so didn't grow up with the ability to make his own decisions and have his own opinions so is taking full advantage now that he does and is finally able to express his disagreement with his families views. They are held to a standard that they will marry correctly and continue the bloodline but Nikolai resents the idea of it and isn't sure that the bloodline even deserves to be continued. This is also a matter of conflict for the boy as he is discovering, especially now that he has the freedom he has sought for years, that he is attracted to men.
Nikolai grew up fairly alone as the Volkov siblings were of all different ages himself being significantly younger than even the next closest but this did not mean they were not close. Together they were fiercely protective and he knew the burdens his elder siblings took on to protect him, for freedom had to place in the Volkov ideology. He always felt rather badly for them, growing up he saw the immense level of pressure that was put upon them and so he never blamed them for turning out the way they have. He knew that they would try to prepare him for the unfortunate reality of being a Volkov, it was a life sentence of duty and control, but he is certain that he will be the one to forgo this. Every dark part of his childhood only made him resent his families ideals more and he is sure that even though it will most definitely lead him to be disowned he won't turn out like the rest of them. He won't let his life be written for him.
