The Ravines live in Lyra's mother's big old family house in the middle of nowhere on the outskirts of Limerick. Sharing the house with them are Lyra's maternal grandparents and her mom's two siblings with their families.

He used to row with his father as a child, and transferred this passion to Lyra and Tristan; they row with him in a creek near their house in the summer holidays/first thing every morning before starting at Hogwarts.

Lyra and Tristan have always been very close, they tell each other everything.

Grandparents and extended family who live with them:
Lyra's maternal family is mostly in Slytherin, with a couple Gryffindors and one Hufflepuff. About half of them have played Quidditch on their house teams.
Lyra's grandparents are both Slytherin and magizoologists.
Lyra's mother's siblings who live with them are her mother's older sister (magizoologist) and younger brother (freelance inventor).

Of her 4 cousins, 2 are still in Hogwarts, a 7th year Gryffindor and 2nd year Slytherin. The other two have graduated, one is a chaser for the Montrose Magpies and the other is pursuing a further degree in potions. Lyra has a strong bond with her cousins too; they often spend time together in the holidays, but she isn't as close to them as she is to Tristan.

The family house is huge (Lyra's maternal side is quite well off), and because of the magizoologists in the family, a separate stable of sorts was built next to the house to hold magical creatures. It's not magically expanded, and generally is just used as a temporary hold for animals being studied/injured which are in need of constant attention, or which can't be transported to a more suitable place for whatever logistical reason. Because of this, handling and caring for all kinds of creatures has basically become second nature to the whole family.

Before starting at Hogwarts, all the kids in the house had private tutors who taught them the regular stuff (English, math etc.), but due to the variety of careers the members of the family have, they taught the kids a bit of everything through letting them watch/help with their work, so the kids didn't know enough to really be able to do much with their knowledge on their own, but it was enough to (possibly) spark an interest in them for these things too. They'd usually go out to play Quidditch in the afternoons too.


When Lyra was young, she wasn't allowed to go on actual brooms because of fear that the broom would go out of control. When she was 6, she convinced Tristan to help her sneak into the broomshed and take out her mom's Firebolt. Tristan threw her Quaffles from the ground and she caught them midair (she wasn't too bad but he was going easy on her). One catch, he threw too high, so she instinctively lunged her body up with a bit too much force and the momentum carried her off the broom. By the laws of physics she should've fallen down onto a low stone wall (the property boundary), but she instead went flying further, slowing down as she went, and landed in a large bush, quite unharmed apart from a few scratches and a reasonable amount of surprise on her face.
