Lena Mei was born to a family of immigrants. Her mother, a muggle who once lived an impoverished life in Hong Kong, met and married a wizard named Yijun who convinced her to live a better life in England, where he intended to pursue further magical studies. Together, they moved to Liverpool and had two children, but only one was gifted with the power of magic – the youngest, Lena.

Naturally, Lena was her father's favourite, which often drew the envy and ire of her older sibling, Evan. This fraught family dynamic made Lena shy and withdrawn. Sometimes, Lena wished she never knew magic so that she may have a chance at bonding with her brother, but her father's unrelenting pressure pushed her to excel at magic, and eventually attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Lena is small for her age, and has a pale complexion due to her lack of exposure to the outside world. (Her father often made her stay indoors to study magic.) She also has trouble socializing with people, and finds it difficult to make friends. At first glance, it may seem like she has no interest besides reading books and studying, when in reality, she yearns for adventure and excitement, but is too afraid to escape her comfort zone.

Lena is particularly interested in studying muggles, in an effort to better understand her family and foster better relations between muggles and wizards. Despite her insecurities and self-doubts, Lena has a strong sense of justice and aspires to become a positive impact on magical society.
