history/background story: rachel was born on may 5th, 2012 in a muggle hospital in london, england. her parents are michael yi and jessica chen.
michael is a pureblood healer in the magical bugs ward of st. mungo's hospital for magical maladies and injuries. he graduated from hogwarts as a hufflepuff and is reliable, efficient, and prefers collaboration over competition. this causes several clashes between him and his daughter, whose constant attempts to disrupt the peace push him beyond his tolerance level. they bond most when they are completing wordless activities together, like riding bikes or playing quidditch.
jessica works as a lawyer at a prominent law firm in london. she is a rational and determined muggle that passed on her distaste for unnecessary rules to her daughter. rachel is unquestionably closer to her mother, as they share many similar traits and can discuss topics for hours on end. however, neither are eager to discuss emotional matters, which kind of sours their closeness.
growing up, rachel was a very energetic and adventurous child to be around. she was the most fun to play make-believe with on the primary school playground, quickly garnering her a muggle friend group: isabella breckinridge, sophie wilkinson, florencia montes, charlotte lyon, amelia ning, and olivia dedrick. for her parents, this was incredibly exhausting. physically, they had to chase her around and play catch or some other playground sport to keep her entertained. intellectually, michael was usually the parent that bowed out from lengthy conversations. jessica stuck around for a very long time, but even she got tired from rachel's flood of words.
going to her grandparents' house every summer is the highlight of each year. the yi grandparents and their ancestors are considered pureblood, but there have definitely been muggles in their bloodline. it's inevitable when you live among them. because of this, rachel and her family do not have the same money, power, and status of the great purebred families. so, her paternal grandparents live in a modest house in guilin, guangxi, china. it was there that rachel learned most about the magical world, including how to play quidditch, magical monsters, and hogwarts, which her paternal grandparents and father attended many years prior.
otherwise, her life back at london was mostly deprived of magic. her parents - especially her mother - wanted her to experience and learn to navigate the muggle world before being plunged into the magical one. as a result, she went to a muggle primary school, learning english, mathematics, history, geography, music, science, and physical education.

first instance of accidental magic:

rachel got in a fight with one of the kids at the playground. it got to a point where the child kicked her and she panicked, trying to find something that she could use as a barrier between them. before she knew it, a breeze had both swept sand into the boy's eyes and transported her right next to her mother on the playground benches. jessica quickly drove her daughter away before the little boy could run to his parents and tell them the strange event that had just happened.
