The history of Esme Hae-won Ryeong is rather complicated so let’s start at the beginning of everything. According to the records, that is the start of the Joseon Dynasty, in 14th century Korea.

Ryeong Suk-ju had the reputation of a hermit. Everyone in the village knew about it. Rumors spread like a wildfire in the countryside. Was it prisoners he was hiding in his large, walled plot of land? The only people who have had the privilege to enter were either members of the family and a few mysterious “esteemed guests.”

To muggle society, the Ryeong family legacy was a mystery, but, to the wizarding world, it was one of high honor. On that mysterious reserve roosted some of the most dangerous creatures known to the magical world— the Chinese Fireball.

The Ryeong family were somewhat of experts on the species. With an 100% success rate, they allowed magizoology scholars to take an up-close-and-personal look at the dragons. Magizoologists from around Asia and even other continents flocked to their reserve.

That was until the Jeju Dragon Attack Incident of 1976. Oh, what a story that was. Due to a weakness in the protection system, one dragon broke free. What would one, very hungry, Chinese Fireball do if it were set free? It would want to sate its hunger, of course. That’s exactly what it did. Swooping over a campsite, the beady eyes of “Narae” (as the particular dragon was affectionately called by the Ryeong kids) focused in on its prey.

A group of particularly loud muggles were seated around a bright campfire, unaware of the beast overhead. First one muggle noticed and pointed, then another. Luckily, a team of aurors from the South Korean magic authority arrived at the scene, armed with the spells required to prevent catastrophe. The muggles were obliviated and the case was resolved.

That was not enough to save the reputation of the Ryeong Sanctuary for Chinese Fireballs. Visitors stopped coming and the family could not afford to maintain the property anymore.

With the ashes of a once prestigious reputation, Byungchul and Junghee Ryeong left Korea for Wales. Choosing the most remote village, they set up their new dragon reserve for Common Welsh Greens— much less dangerous than their Chinese counterparts.

The Common Welsh Green project was a success. The wizarding community of Great Britain did not hold the same feelings against them as those in South Korea and China so their flow of guests returned. The couple worked tirelessly to bring prosperity to their family.

1976 was the birth year of their first son, named Phoenix Hyun-sik Ryeong. If given the option, he would say his name is just Hyunsik. When he was with other wizarding children of the area, they couldn’t pronounce it easily but it was better than being teased for having a “weird” name. He preferred to be taken seriously. Hyun-sik was sorted into Ravenclaw during his time at Hogwarts before going on to become part of the family business.

Their second child, Emily Hyun-joo Ryeong, was born in 1978. She was the most outgoing of the siblings who were all somewhere on the introverted spectrum and therefore got the role of correspondence rather than dragon training. She was sorted into Hufflepuff.

Danielle Hyun-ah Ryeong was born a year later in 1979. As the Gryffindor of the family, she worked hands-on with the new dragons acclimating them to the facilities and to the other dragons.

Their last child, Leonard Hyun-jin Ryeong was born in 1981. As the youngest of the lot, he was the one who valued competition the most. He was known most for his tenacious attitude and iron will. The Sorting Hat placed him in Slytherin.

The lot of them moved back to the reserve after finishing their time in Hogwarts. The mansion was well-kept, perhaps not as glamorous as the average pureblood legacy home, but there was space for all three generations to live in relative harmony. It was built by Byungchul alone upon first purchasing the land. He had no specific plans for the layout so it is riddled with passageways that lead to nowhere and hidden tunnels. The walls of every room were slightly different. Despite looking like it might fall apart at any second, magic held it in place.

During his time in Hogwarts, Hyun-sik was the most successful in romance. He began dating Evelyn Sung in fourth year and they married three years after graduation. The other siblings married as well and a large new generation of grandchildren was formed.

Quinn Ryeong is the eldest son of Evelyn and Hyun-sik. Born in 2004, he is a Hogwarts graduate from Hufflepuff. His nature is like that of a true badger. Badgerer, that is. The majority of the words that leave his mouth are teasing his younger siblings and cousins. He takes joy in pranks and embraces the role of the mental youngest (despite being the oldest in age.)

Seraphine Ryeong, or Sera, as she prefers, comes next. Hyun-sik attempted to protest the choice of name but the name was familial for Evelyn. Sera takes after Evelyn the most out of all the siblings, in both appearance and in nature. Both women are of stone-faced, yet relaxed nature. Their emotions do not show easily, yet are stronger when they do appear. Seraphine is a current 7th year in Hufflepuff.

There is an age gap between 17-year-old Sera and the next of the bunch, Alexander, or Alex, Ryeong. The phrase “danger is my middle name” encapsulates the 3rd year Gryffindor. Even compared to Quinn, he has found his way into problematic situations more times than he can count.

Lana Ryeong is more naive than her younger sister and cousins. Perhaps it was because she was raised in the enclosed environment of the reserve with only her family and the guests that she is so openly friendly and trusting of others. She is the questioner of the family, ever curious and learning. Lana is currently a second-year Ravenclaw.

That leaves Esme Ryeong. Of the family, Esme is most easily compared to her Uncle Leonard. She is a strong-minded one, and has been that way since she was born.

As a child, Esme was an early talker and a frequent talker. In order to be heard over all the other children in the house, she had to be more assertive than the rest.

Before arriving to Hogwarts, Esme was homeschooled. It was more like a one-room schoolhouse though, given the amount of students. A few children from neighboring pureblood families came as well. School consisted of magical history, family history, proper etiquette, basic subjects such as writing and math, violin lessons, and a small section of hands-off magizooligy (mainly about dragons.)

It was school that taught Esme to be respectful of rules. The more she was obedient, the more praise she got, and she lived off of praise. The feeling of validation whenever she was more advanced than those her age was addictive.

By the time of her 11th birthday, Esme has been counting down the days for over a year. Sure enough, when she came to breakfast, there was a letter placed by her plate of pumpkin pasties. Esme Ryeong was a witch.

This fact has been proven 6 years prior. Alex, who had recently had a growth spurt, had taken it upon himself to place her favorite stuffed animal up on the highest shelf. Just as she was about to complain to her mother, the shelf rocked slightly and the bear slid right off.

Esme has a tall figure for her age at exactly 5 feet. Her daintily built figure is graceful and her posture is erect. She has mid-back length dark hair that falls in waves and brown double-lidded eyes. Her skin is porcelain pale with vains that are visible if the observer looks closely. She appears as if she hasn’t been touched by nature in a long, long time.

The first impression that one would get of Esme is that she takes the rules very seriously. She does her best to stay out of trouble and on the good side of the teachers. Their praise is what fuels her ambition.

Esme is a naturally competitive person. Perhaps it is because she is observant and notices others. She is always accounting for those around herself before acting. Making comparisons is easy after that.

Esme is neither especially shy nor especially talkative. She believes in being courteous to everyone, however, she doesn’t enjoy excessive small talk. To her, the value of a few close friends is greater than that of many acquaintances.

A personal moral code guides her actions. Esme despises giving up and admitting defeat. She is tenacious, or excessively stubborn if you see it that way, and will work hard to ensure those she cares about are protected.
