Shy and mild socially awkward, Lauretta often wears her long, wavy, red hair in a manner that covers much of her very pale face. Her hair is often tied back in pigtails, but as she has gotten older Lauretta has opted for less childlike hairstyles more frequently. She is 150cm tall, which is on the taller side for girls her age. This has never really bothered her as she does not have many concerns about her appearance. Lauretta wears glasses, with thick red frames, but can see alright without them, so some days she prefers to go without them, especially if she knows she will have to do some form of physical activity in the day. Behind her hair and glasses, Lauretta has emerald green eyes, which sparkle with childlike innocence. Lauretta is very curious and loves to explore, however she is extremely clumsy, and can often be seen sporting bandages, bruises and scrapes on her elbows and knees.

At the request of her muggle father, she attended a non magical elementary school, where she took part in band and robotics clubs. In band she played clarinet, and she continues to do so even while being educated magically. Lauretta was top of her class almost every year, and displays abnormally high levels of intelligence, but due to this she often struggles to focus on everyday life and day to day tasks. Lauretta has always been reluctant to leave her own inner world, which has made it difficult for her to make friends. Her social reluctance is also contributed to by the fact that she is autistic, which means she excels in areas which she enjoys, such as music, but often struggles to communicate ideas and feelings. She has never shown much interest in sports, muggle and magical alike, instead preferring to further her academic and musical pursuits from the safety of her room. This has always puzzled her mother, who herself played Quidditch during her youth.

Lauretta's mother, Millicent Smith, is a witch who attended Hogwarts. She works as a bartender in a pub in Wales, which is where she met Lauretta's muggle father, Henry Smith. Henry is very open minded about the magical world, and supports Lauretta in her magical learning. She has grown up in an incredibly positive environment, and hopes to spread the same positive energy to Hogwarts. In addition to her parents, Lauretta also lives with her younger brother Avery, who is 6 years old. Avery has not yet exhibited signs of magic to Lauretta, but her parents seem to think he is a wizard.

When Lauretta was 4, she had a meltdown because she was unable to communicate what she wanted to her mother. During this, Lauretta managed to shatter several glasses on a counter due to uncontrollable magic. This was one of her first observed uses of magic. Lauretta has also accidentally made toys float through her room, her clarinet play notes by itself, and pushed bowls of food she did not like away from her using her magic. As she got older, the explosive quality of her magic became more under control, and now her accidental magic is of a more controllable nature.
