Michael Ashen is a young man from a rough neighborhood in Glasgow, Scotland. He is the oldest of two children, but he and his sister are being raised by an Aunt, after the death of both of his parents in a mundane automobile accident. His aunt is well-intentioned, but not very bright.

Michael tries to pride himself on his stoic toughness, and ability to endure without complaint. He loves his sister Ruby, and his Aunt Peg, and won't hear anything bad about them, and knows that Peg is doing her best. He wants more than anything not to be a burden on her.

Michael boxes at a local gym -- in a neighborhood where everyone boxes, and all the other boys are taller than he is. He's taken a lot of abuse from them, and his classmates, but isn't the kind to hit first. He has no friends, and is bitterly lonely. School is miserable for him, and he has no real sanctuary anywhere, so he is a mediocre student. For him, PE is just a jungle of bullying and hatred.

He first reflexively used magic when he was running away from local bullies, when he ran through a wall. He didn't even notice.

It was Hogmanay, and he was carrying groceries and cigarettes back to his aunt, when four of the local toughs confronted him. They knew his aunt smoked, and this was their best chance to get cigarettes without having to go into a store themselves. They chased him almost all the way down to the Clyde, and when he looked back to see if they were gaining, he suddenly was looking at the inside wall of a pharmacy.

It took him a week before he tried it again.
