From a young age Maximus was taught to never show his magical powers. Both of his parents were muggles who were completely ashamed of Maximus and saw his magic as an evil power, something that should not exist. As soon as Maximus' powers began to manifest the two of them locked him away from the world refusing to let him interact with anyone this in turn hindered his ability to develop social skills. When ever Maximus did something that they did not like he was beaten, in varying ways and various levels of severity this continued.
His only solace was the summer holidays when he had the chance to escape his wretched life in East Kilbride and travel to his Aunt Martha's house in Edinburgh. Martha was a tall brown haired women in her mid thirties, she was beautiful with just a touch of age tarnishing her kind yet knowing face and she always wore a thick blue scarf with a Silver raven emblazoned on it. But perhaps the greatest thing about Her was that she was a witch. She could make things fly or catch fire or glow, all of these things fascinated Maximus and she began to tutor him on how to control his abilities. In addition to this she told him stories of Hogwarts, the best wizarding school in the whole world, she told him of the castle and the ghosts and the classes, she told him about the houses and how she was in the Raven-claw house. This interested Maximus greatly and, noticing this Martha apprehensively untied the scarf from her neck and gently wrapped it around his. "Something to remember me by" She said with a grin in answer to his surprised expression.
Walking the streets of Edinburgh with his Aunt made him feel like life was actually worth living and he never wanted to go back to the dreadful house in East Kilbride. But he always did. Back to his parents who hated him for his powers. Back to the abuse that they brought down upon him. Back to not being loved. But he still had Aunt Martha... Until he didn't.
One Summer, just before Maximus turned eleven, while sitting at home by the fire with her and listening to her stories Maximus witnessed the death of the one person who he loved in the world. He later learned that she had dead of a heart attack but he didn't care. All he knew was that she was gone, never to come back. All he had to remember her by was the scarf.
When he made it back home to East Kilbride he cried. And cried. And cried until he couldn't cry any more. At dinner that night Maximus' father slapped him across the face, telling him to "get over it". But for Maximus this was the final straw, eleven years of hell and the two of them couldn't even muster up a second of sympathy. He'd had enough and he began to scream at them, berating them with all the pent up feelings he had kept locked up for years. His vision red, he watched as their faces turned from surprised, to angry, to horrified as all the loose items in the kitchen began to float up. Finally in one last scream of anguish he sent both his parents flying across the room and into the counter with a sickening crack. And they both moved no more. In a state of panic Maximus looked around frantically trying to think. A few seconds passed and he realized his only option was to run. He grabbed some money from the counter, tightened his scarf and ran out the door into the night.
A Few weeks later on August second a surprise came to Maximus. A man wearing a thick green cloak approached him with a smile on his face. "Maximus Reyes I presume" He said with a soft kind voice. Maximus' only reply was a nervous nod. The man smiled wider and handed him a letter with a crest emblazoned on the packaging On the crest it said "Hogwarts" and showed a lion, a snake, a badger, and a raven.
