Karkat Vantas grew up with his father in westport, on June 11th of 2009 he turned 11. being slightly behind other students his age, he's barely five feet. a mess of black hair sticks out in odd directions atop his head. his often furrowed eyebrows are bushy and thick. his eyes narrow and a dark brown, sunken into his dark skin

a slight short temper, he has a history of getting into scuffles with people. most often disagreements with his father. he likes to read and most prefers to be alone with a good book. although he has friends he doesnt consider himself a social butterfly

his parents Zoea and Craeg divorced a long while ago, leaving him to live with his muggle father who tried his best to stifle any magic. they divorced primarily because Craeg decided that the magic word was nothing for his son to grow up in. so he got custody of karkat and moved the two of them far away. Karkat only knew of his mother from the few and far between christmas card, Craeg told his mum was an eccentric traveller who was too busy thrill seeking to see her son. this caused the boy to deeply resent his mother. he swore that if he ever saw her, he could tell it like it is. on a sunny june afternoon, he had just woken up when his estranged mother showed up out of the blue. she arrived with the notion that as a budding wizard karkat had to go to hogwarts. Karkat told her flat out she was crazy, magic wasnt real and she was a raving loon. his dad screamed at the woman to leave before he called the police. Karkat practically fumed in the face, that woman wouldnt just come into his life after 11 years and act like it was all fine and dandy. he stormed off into his room telling her to go back to whatever wacko shack she escaped from. he heard the former lovers scream and shout from down the stairs. that was until the almost stranger came up to his room and smiled telling him he'd just have to see for himself. his father wouldn't speak to them, only said that if they wanted to go prance around in fantasy lands then go right ahead. handing him a letter that had come in the mail earlier that day. it talked of being accepted into a school. this had to be a forgery, that asylum escapee knew no bounds. how could his father let her take him off like this, he'd probably get murked in a back alley. begrudgingly he packed a bag with no other choice. she took him to 9 3/4 station, telling him to run straight through the wall. he looked at her with a raised brow. she really was a loon. he planted himself firmly and crossed his arms. she sighed, grabbing him by the arm and dragging him forward. he squeezed his eyes closed preparing for an impact that didn't come. they ran through as if nothing was there. that wasn't possible, not possible at all. he saw kids from varied ages roaming around the station, older kids with owls in cages, parents giving younger ones pep talks. was he going mad or did this Hogwarts actually exist? he looked up at his mother who only smiled at him. "the letter will let you know what to do". with that she pushed him towards the train and left him there, this was a new beginning. To a world he never knew of. so he got on the train, clutching his suitcase so hard his knuckles turned white. he was on a train by himself, surrounded by kids who seemed completely in their element while karkat stook out like a sore thumb. this was gonna be a long ride.

although his father tried to hide it, it was noticeable when small occurrences happened with karkats anger. the most overwhelming however was when he was 9. a boy shoved him on the playground and stole his toy truck. karkat felt as if he was about to boil in the face. he muttered complaints as he got up, but as he stared down the boy who had sat and began to roll the truck around. the yellow vehicle turned itself around and drove back to karkat.
