If you asked for a description of the Amelia Baines from one of her next-door neighbors, you’d probably think twice about the replies. Solitary, reclusive, constantly cooped up in her home. If it hadn’t been for the occasional peeking out of the tightly drawn curtains, or the sight of a man bringing groceries to her doorstep every Sunday, you’d probably expect the fairly large townhouse she and her young daughter lived in to be abandoned.

Rowan and Amelia Baines had fallen in love and married in secret against all odds. Rowan, a pure-blood wizard and Amelia, a wealthy muggle. It seemed that nobody been in support of the unique pairing, if you didn’t count the pair themselves. The love story hadn’t been a long-lived one, though. It wasn't long after Amelia’s pregnancy had been revealed to Rowan that the wizard upped and left in the late hours of the night, giving nobody any hint of a warning prior. Heartbroken and resentful, Amelia made it a priority to sever the connection between her child and the world of magic.

She failed.

Though Amelia lived in paranoia, she prioritized raising her only child, a task that proved difficult without the presence of the girl’s estranged father. It was a lifestyle that was only natural to Valerie -- one that didn’t include the presence of all too many people other than herself. Though, the sense of normality that had developed within the household had been shattered not long following Valerie’s eleventh birthday. The young girl inevitably had her first magical outburst, which came in the form of her telekinetically toppling a book off of a shelf. Amelia wrote it off as mere coincidence, refusing to consider, let alone accept, what it might’ve meant. But, no more than a week later, it became impossible to ignore. An acceptance letter to Hogwarts had shown up on their doorstep. News that would’ve warranted a cry of joy from others fell over the household like a lead weight.

The day of Valerie’s departure was solemn and awkward. A few tense hugs and kisses on the forehead and the young witch was soon off to make a name for herself in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
