James Coppernickle grew up in Strickland, a tiny village in North England, surrounded by forests and mountains. He has hazel eyes and straight, neat brown hair, save for a tuft at the back which even the stiffest comb refuses to tame. Growing up, he was a quiet boy, spending a great deal of time in his own company. He had a wild imagination, and dreamed of fantastical creatures and places. The local landscape certainly helped in his daydreaming.

When not in his own head, he was amicable, funny and easy-going. He had his bad side too, of course. His shyness meant that he would rather keep his feelings too himself, resulting in occasional outbursts of anger or indignation.

He grew up loving words. Indeed, he went through a phase of reading the dictionary before bed to search for interesting and amusing words! He read voraciously as often as he could. His love of words he poured into his imagination, creating whole worlds in his head and filling it with stories and poetry.

His quietness kept him out of trouble on the whole. And yet, as is so often the case, it seemed to draw in the bullies. He tried to stand up to them, but he was not a strong boy by any stretch. After several years of quietly dealing with the name-calling and having his possessions relocated against his will, he finally snapped. On the school bus one day, his main taunter (Ward Slater) snatched his book from him, ripping several pages out. It was a birthday present, the latest in James' favourite series. Maddened by this, he wished all manner of ill on the boy as he collected the soggy torn sheets from the floor of the bus. He glared at Ward so ferociously that the air seemed to crackle. "Shut up!" shouted James. And, as if by magic, Ward was silent. His mouth kept moving for a moment before he stood awe-struck.

James looked at him perplexed, then started to laugh as Ward stood dumbly mouthing insults at him. Ward grabbed his bag and scarpered. Within a few blocks, the effects of James' outburst wore off, but ever since then, Ward left James well alone and most of the others followed suit.
