wand lore

The proper owner of the aspen wand is often an accomplished duelist or destined to be so, for the aspen wand is one of those particularly suited to martial magic. An infamous and secretive eighteenth-century duelling club, which called itself the Silver Spears, was reputed to admit only those who owned aspen wands

Dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most magic power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types.

History

i. quill of acceptance

06-22-2016 01:40AM

At the sound of crackling thunder Sarah’s eyes popped open. She stared at the dimly lit ceiling peppered with glow in the dark stars for a moment. Sitting up, her eyes adjusted to the darkness around her.

Then came the sound of shattering glass from below, startling Sarah for a moment. “Sophia, did you hear that?” Sarah whispered softly. She slowly sat up and looked over at her identical twin, still fast asleep. “She sleeps through everything,” Sarah thought as she chuckled to herself.

Deciding to let her sister sleep and investigate on her own she tip toed lightly across the room then into the hallway. Trying her hardest not to make a sound, she focused intently on each step along the creaky wooden floor. Approaching the staircase she could hear the commotion more clearly. Leaning on the banister, she peered into the kitchen below.

“How can you be so irresponsible?” Sarah could see her mothers irritation immediately. Looking at her father with wild eyes and a gesture demanding explanation. He looked back at Sarah’s mother and took a smug swig from his bottle.

“Jesus fucking Christ” He spat back with disgust, “You’re such a hypocrite! So what if I want to have a little damn fun on my day off. There’s nothing wrong with that!”

The conversation, which started as an indiscernible whisper now crescendoed into howls of rage. “FUN? Losing thousands in one night seems fun to you? How the hell are we supposed to pay the bills this month!?”

“Just shut your fucking mouth and let me deal with it!” Sarah watched the scene unfold before her. Silently, she debated returning to her room.

“Except you won’t deal with it. The debtors will come by and take everything we have! How could you be so daft?” Her father then threw the bottle in his hand against the wall, nearly striking her mother. Sarah gasped giving away her previously inconspicuous position. Both parents looked to the her, rage in her fathers eyes and tears streaming from her mothers.

“Don’t you dare bring her into this!” Her mother yelled. Before she could finish he was making his way to the staircase.

“What the hell are you doing out of your room,” his voice bellowed with rage, “get back here and help your mother clean up this mess!” Sarah could feel his footsteps pounding in her direction.

She swiftly turned around and bolted towards her bedroom. Sarah could feel his booming footsteps getting closer as she approached her bedroom. For just a moment she thought she would escape, but quickly remembered her door doesn’t lock. She made it a few steps in her room when she heard her father roar behind her. She stopped and slowly turned around, paralyzed in fear.

Though, when she looked at her father, he stood frozen in the doorway. With one foot in the air, he appeared unnaturally still. Until Sarah realized that he wasn’t moving at all. Not even breathing it seemed.

It wasn’t possible, yet Sarah knew that she was responsible for “freezing,” her father. A moment later her mother shrieked. “Girls, are you okay?” She ran past the frozen figure and hugged Sarah tightly. The second she felt her mother’s embrace, she heard her fathers foot slam into the wooden floor. Sophia stirred and sat up swiftly in her bed, looking around with wide eyes.

“What the fuck was that?” He asked shakily, with bewilderment in his eyes. Even though her mother was crying, her voice came clear and strong, “That was the part where me and my daughters are leaving.”

And with that, they packed up all they could carry, and took the earliest train to the Manchester Victoria.

The train screeched to a slow stop. Sarah stood up and grabbed her bags from the bench compartment. Their journey from Essex to Manchester was 6 hours 11 minutes. For most of the trip she was reading, and talking to Sophia.

Sarah wondered what life in Manchester would be like. She’s transferring to a new school, living in a new city. It was all very exciting, and nerve wracking! Her sister would be there with her too, she remembered.

When everyone gathered their bags they made their way to the exit. As they stepped into the station, Sarah immediately spotted her grandparents. They held a big sign that read “Welcome Home Liz Sophia and Sarah” and were wearing matching ball caps.

The girls ran over and hugged their grandparents. “Girls! I missed you so much, how has your school year been?” Their grandmother asked with a smile. “I made so many new friends grandma, and learned a lot!” Sarah replied excitedly.

After getting caught up, they were driven by their grandmother Louise to their new home. Sarah tried to remember what it looked like, it’s been almost a year since she’s visited. As they pulled in to the driveway she was awestruck. It was on the corner of a fairly quiet street. Gated and fenced with bushes, so it was quite private. Behind the gate was a meticulously kept garden of mature pine trees and flowering shrubs.

The house itself was very impressive. An old two story Victorian with a big front porch. It’s painted white and has intricate wood lattice detailing. There is an in ground pool in the back. Which, Sarah absolutely loved to take advantage of. “Don’t worry about your bags, we’ll get them later. Who’s hungry? I made sandwiches before we left.” her grandfather said joyfully in his Irish accent.

Sarah grabbed a sandwich from the fridge and took it to her bedroom. It was spacious with two beds on opposite sides of the room. In the middle was a bay window overlooking the front yard. It had a library on either side of the window.

She sat on her bed, a twin sized mattress with a lace canopy, which could be drawn shut if she pleased. Sophia came in not too long after, sandwich in hand. They giggled at each other. “I wonder what our new school is gonna be like!” exclaimed Sophia excitedly. “Hopefully I’ll get a locker! I hate carrying around all my books.” she replied. Sarah hoped it would be big, with lots of people to meet.

Suddenly their mom popped in. “If you two want we could go unpack some ice cream into our stomachs?” They happily agreed. Sarah knew this year she would try her best, and nobody could get in her way.
