Elspeth Mae Portlaen was born and raised on the outskirts of Cork, Ireland in her family’s estate. Her parents, Caldan and Iella Portlaen, both came from distinct pure-blood families. She was the only child of her parents to survive infancy, as her mother had many miscarriages and stillborn children before and after Elspeth’s birth. Her father often mentioned his disappointment that Elspeth had not been a male heir. During one such occasion, Elspeth accidently shattered the tea cup that he was holding, marking the first time that her magic had surfaced and the only time she had publicly acted out against her father. Her parents ensured that Elspeth's childhood was privileged, if a little isolated. Growing up, she was instructed in pure-blood customs and social etiquette, as all pure-blood children should be (according to her parents). Her father expanded their family's wealth by investing in various businesses, which proved to be quite lucrative. Using the vast wealth that he had accumulated, he also decided to invest time and money in politics, supporting campaigns that were decidedly against the rights of muggle-borns and supernatural creatures. Her parents spent most of their time managing their businesses and engaging in politics, leaving Elspeth to grow up in the care of various house-elves and the wizards that worked for her family. As a result, she grew up without much structure and was used to getting away with anything that she did, as long as she was discrete enough that her parents wouldn’t find out. She recalls that she was bored throughout most of her childhood, having spent most of her time with adults. The summer before beginning Hogwarts, Elspeth’s father was at the center of a political and economic scandal. It was uncovered that he had been one of the primary investors in the unregulated trade of various potion ingredients, which had come from unethical sources. Although he managed to avoid time in Azkaban, the entire ordeal put a large dent in the family’s wealth and reputation. Before Elspeth left for Hogwarts, her father told her that it was up to her to reestablish the family’s reputation (presumably by befriending witches and wizards from respectable families and eventually marrying into one).

Despite the rather outspoken character exhibited by her parents, Elspeth is much quieter and contemplative than them. Adults that meet her often described her as “rather charming” and “polite”. She excels at social etiquette. Her father often told her that he was pleased by her mild temperament and that she would make a good wife when she married. She is mature for her age and very book smart, as books were her constant companions in her isolated and dull childhood. Due to the circumstances of her upbringing, she also has a relatively inflated self-image. She does not handle rejection well and although she does enjoy learning, she is used to everything being handed to her because of her family’s wealth and her own personal charm. Her interests were relatively limited growing up. She liked to read and even learned how to cook from the house-elves. The family parties that she was forced to attend often bored her, but she liked dressing up and greatly enjoyed listening to the gossip that the adults around her spread.

She takes after her mother in looks. She has long, blonde hair and green eyes (although they can appear blue depending on what she is wearing). She is lithe, with soft, untarnished facial features. She always maintains her appearance before allowing anyone to see her, as she was taught that appearance is the most important aspect of a first impression. She also has a keen sense of fashion, wearing dresses and skirts that are both conservative and elegant.
