That loud flurry of red hair and pink cheeks, shoving her nose into everyone's business and asking too many questions? That's Lydia Hughes, half-blood witch from Edinburgh.

There always appears to be something brewing behind her bright blue eyes, and when paired with her signature lopsided smile, she's sure to get a defeated sigh from anyone who knows her well enough. Liddy's cheeks are filled with freckles and always carry a rosy tinge, and her clothes and hair rarely deserve the title of "tidy".

However, underneath the freckles and mess of ginger hair sits a fairly average girl; average weight, average height, average levels of awkwardness and lanky limbs for a girl her age.

Many see Lydia as plain rowdy, nosy and blunt. Those who know her better will know that this is only due to her disdain for small talk and unnecessary vagueness, as well as her curious nature. She hates the thought that there are things she may never know, stories she may never hear and mysteries she may never understand; don't be surprised if she whips out a useless factoid and proceeds to ask what your favourite type of body of water is.

Her goals are generally self-centred, making it easy for her to obsess over her own thoughts too much and forget about the thoughts and feelings of her peers. Lydia isn't necessarily apathetic, but her questions and observations may come off as inappropriately blunt, and she often doesn't know how to react when someone confides in her, even though she may care deeply for them.

Her occasionally loud voice and eagerness to talk to people is oftentimes mistaken for extroversion. It should be noted, however, that Lydia needs moments to herself to recharge and process her experiences, and may abruptly withdraw herself from social situations. She relaxes by caring for her houseplants (which usually don't last too long), reading, and playing her cello.

Lydia Hughes was fortunate enough to grow up in a loving, supportive family. Her mother comes from a pure-blood family, and has made a decent living brewing and selling potions from a small shop in Edinburgh. Her father, however, is a muggle; he works as a music professor at the university and has played a great deal in his daughter's love for the subject.

The young Hughes family was quite worried when the kitchen lights would randomly flicker, when sheet music would go flying around the room and wind-chimes would sing with no sign of a breeze; it took a good saging of the house and search for a sneaky poltergeist before they realised that their four year old Lydia was, in fact, a witch! She grew up in an idealistic household where her mother was very open to sharing and expressing her magic, and her father was very open to enjoying the wonder that it brings.

Above all, Lydia strives for recognition and meaning. She wants to be her own person. She wants to understand the world and impact it. She wants to live without regrets, without wasted time and without missed opportunities.
