When one first glimpses Vera Collins, it is very likely that one will assume she is a sweet, intelligent girl who acts pleasantly and always tries to live up to expectations. Her shiny black hair is always neatly styled, usually with a bow or headband, her clothes are modest but refined, and her figure is petite and unassuming. While speaking, her voice is clear and bright and unwavering. For the most part, one would be correct about these assumptions, as Vera is generally friendly and intelligent. Behind these qualities, however, lie a personality fraught with trust issues and a lack of empathy.

You see, throughout her childhood, Vera believed she had it all: a perfectly normal (not to mention wealthy) family, popularity in school, and an intelligence superior to those of her peers. She was spoiled by her parents and well-liked by her teachers, and praise seemed to shower her wherever she went. This helped develop a bit of an ego within Vera, one that is now easily damaged, and a selfish attitude that now repels those around her. She has a difficult time considering others’ feelings and has to make a conscious effort to do so, if she even remembers to do so at all. Her intelligence and wit has also served to inflate her ego, so she often attracts the title of “know-it-all.”

And she truly used to believe that she knew everything there was to know about the world. That is, she used to believe so until she accidentally changed the family cat’s fur from orange to black in front of her extended relatives on her 10th birthday. Although the event seemed small, Vera had never known magic existed until after that moment. Chaos quickly ensued, as the entire family was unaware of the existence of magic as well. The entire family except for Vera’s mother, apparently. Throughout the course of a few days, Vera’s life changed dramatically. Her mother had kept her wizarding background a secret from everyone, even her husband, and the betrayal of such a secret split the family. Vera was suddenly under the care of only one parent, her father, and many of her aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents now refused to be involved in the life of such a strange little girl. Her mother left, unable to live with her husband and his staunch disappointment in her actions.

Vera was furious at her mother for a long time; she is still furious now, though she does wish she could see her again at times. Hiding something so crucial from her husband and child, then running away once it was revealed was the ultimate break in trust for Vera. She does not trust easily now because of it, and she is practically Muggle-born with the amount of information she has about the wizarding world. Despite the circumstances of her magical revelation, Vera is excited about attending Hogwarts and exploring her abilities. She only wishes her mother were around to guide her.
