Erik grew up in Liverpool with his father, his mother (a witch) died eleven years prior during his birth. After his mother's death his father spiraled into a great depression, grief overcame him, and he decided that he couldn't belong to the Wizarding world while his wife was not. So Erik didn't grow up with tales of great Wizards and powerful spells, he didn't grow up knowing of all the joy and danger that the other world provided. He grew up as nothing more than a little muggle boy with a neglectful father and a penchant for causing trouble when he was harassed by bullies for his shabby, less than well-maintained clothes. All-in-all Erik wasn't a very large boy, he was bookish and had a thirst for even the most mundane knowledge. Most bullies approached him when they could see nothing but his askew blonde hair poking up from behind one of his many shabby books.

Eventually, and thankfully, his father came around close to his Eleventh birthday. Apparently having seen Erik's letter from Hogwart's reminded him of his wife, and what she would have wanted for their son. So, he sat his young son down and explained to him that he was special. A wizard! Who belonged to a long line of wizards on his mother's side, and soon, with his father at his side, he would prepare for his first year at the famous, well-thought of school.
