History

His parents emigrated from Japan shortly before he was born in order for his mother to establish a liaison role within the Ministry and for his father’s research work on magical botanicals. Both his parents were remarkably successful in their respective fields and when they welcomed their infant son into the world it was just expected that he would be the image of perfection. The disappointments started early however. It’s not that Jin isn’t intelligent, he’s actually rather bright, but in his family a B is a fail and anything less than full marks simply means that you didn’t work hard enough. Academically Jin rarely seemed to excel above the middle of the pack despite the rather extensive private tutoring he received. He was pushed to develop musically across a range of instruments under the theory that it would provide him the mental discipline and dexterity for magical studies but whilst he could hold a tune Jin would never become one of those child prodigies that hold their own concerts. He was thrown so deep into extracurricular activities that he never quite developed close friends and although any who observed him would have called him a rather miraculous child he always viewed his lack of excellence as a personal failure. Both of his parents had started at Mahoutokoro at age seven and had shown signs of magic before their sixth birthday. In the style of a typical disappointment however Jin had yet to show any signs of magic whatsoever by the time his eleventh birthday rolled around and he had all but been written off as a squib, bordering on being disowned by his parents all together.

Despite his intensive scheduling however there were rare afternoons where his mother was working late, his father was engaged in some detailed field research and when his tuition had fallen through the cracks Jin would get to relax. He would normally escape for a few moments, riding a bike into the city center where he could be a face in the crowd. Climbing to Arthur’s seat he could for a moment imagine that he was just a normal child and would watch the city below as a means to escape. Occasionally he would even meet other children up there and be able to play one of the simple muggle games with them. It was on one of these such trips that his magic first appeared. Standing halfway up Holyrood Jin found an injured bird, a kestrel that had become ensnared by litter. Not knowing what else to do but desperate to help the young bird Jin removed the plastic noose and was truly shocked to watch as the wounds stitched themselves shut under his touch and the bird took to the air once more. The very next day his Hogwarts acceptance letter arrived and for once it felt as if he had finally lived up to his parents expectations.

Overjoyed that their son was finally showing signs of being a genuine wizard his parent’s attitude flipped over night, but unfortunately it didn’t last long. They whisked him to diagonally where they immediately snatched up all the relevant supplies but when they went to Olivander’s their hopes fell once more. At his parent’s insistence he tried just about every Cherry wand in the shop, none of them were a match. Both his parents were the proud, and somewhat obnoxious, wielders of cherry wands and in their eyes Jin’s acquisition of a willow wand was just further disappointment. Despite that many wizards would be overjoyed to be matched with willow he had once again failed his family’s expectations.

Personality

Named for a god of thunder Raijin was supposed to be the next great wizard of his family and had unfathomable expectations to live up to, unfortunately Jin rarely lives up to these aspirations. From a strong wizarding family Jin has often felt that he didn’t belong to his family and continued failure to live up to his parents lofty ideals has lead him to develop a not insignificant level of insecurity in his own abilities.

When separated from his rather suffocating parents Jin slowly opens up and enjoys the company of other children but without a strong history of socializing he struggles to know what to say and when to say it. Although he often attempts to hide it in order to appear a ‘normal’ child he struggles with an intense internal insecurity.

Appearance

Jin is a relatively standard child for his age in appearance, perhaps on the slightly shorter side but by no means noticeably so. He’s slightly on the thin and lanky side with short, parted dark hair and almost black eyes. His face is relatively round with large ears and smaller eyes.
