Violet's father was always a bit embarrassing, the way fathers can be. He was an accountant, he made terrible puns, he cheered too loud in the applause part of her dance recitals. Her mother, though - while she was a touch mad, matter-of-factly believing every legend their native Ireland had to offer, she had a charm and grace that always drew Violet to her nonetheless. Sometimes she could be moody, and she always seemed sort of homesick. Violet had often wondered if her mother was part fairy, though she wasn't sure what that made her.

But when Violet blew out the candles on her ninth birthday the smoke turned half a dozen colors before floating in the shape of a butterfly up to the ceiling. She quickly learned the truth: Violet's mother was a witch. And now that she knew her daughter could do magic as well, she shared as much of the wizarding world as she could with her daughter before Violet's letter to Hogwarts came as she turned eleven.

Violet loves the arts, and along with the aforementioned dance class, her first trick with the smoke hinted at something of an artist's eye. She's often sketching something and has started to dabble in watercolors as well. She dearly loves magic and wants to learn as much as she can, in order to do all sorts of fantastic things.

But she's also inherited her father's solidness and a clear-eyed sense of her own self, of right and wrong. She's able to look at a situation, consider it, and do what needs to be done - and while of course she's hurt as much as anyone by failure or hurtful words, she has the patience to get back up again and push on towards whatever her goal might be.
