Nigel is short for his age, a young boy of partly Indian descent with long black hair typically kept in a loose braid falling about to his shoulder blades. He was born and raised in Edinburgh by his muggle Father, named Thomas Chandler and his witch mother, Amelia Hopwood-- legally speaking, the family are Chandlers to the Muggle world and go by Hopwood in the Wizarding world.
Amelia Hopwood is an Auror, and as such often absent from Nigel's life in order to deal with her job, leaving Thomas to do most of the childcare. He takes this burden on in good humor, working part-time as an interpreter in the Muggle world in addition to running the household. This was, in fact, how Thomas and Amelia met: Amelia was out on a job, and there ended up being quite the commotion. Thomas noticed it, called the police, and rushed off to work before he could be obliviated. Later on, he approached Amelia in a bar during her off hours without mentioning how he recognized her. They got along swimmingly, began dating, and when Amelia finally figured she should try revealing her magic she was astonished to find that her boyfriend was not the least bit surprised.
Nigel gets along well with his family, though he has never been very close to his mother. In particular, he is a fan of his father's boyfriend Nathan, a Squib who sometimes comes over for family dinners as well as his dates with Thomas. Amelia knows about Thomas's relationship with Nathan, and the three of them have discussed it openly, ever since Nathan told her out of concern when Amelia first became pregnant.
Nigel is a reserved child, typically, though a great fan of any and all music. He is usually cheerful in appearance no matter what his actual feelings, and does his best to be observant. His favorite color is red, and while he does not particularly care for reading, he does adore animals and magic in general. Diagon Alley enchants him.
