Physical Description: Born in Hawaii, Leilani is a little shorter than average height. Having been a broom racer most her life she is not just physically fit but due to a rigorous workout routine is well muscled. As a south east Asian icon back in her day, she tries to maintain relevance by chasing the latest fashions though she’d most likely tell you she just was born with great fashion sense. She is exceedingly competitive which gives her a naturally more aggressive look, walk, and mannerisms.
Mental Description: Leilani comes off as outgoing, upbeat, and charismatic when in front of a fan and always loves to talk shop to those in the know. She is the consummate sports professional and has spent decades honing a camera ready personality. On the track she is a demon daredevil. She leaves it all on the line and has come close multiple times to her own demise. However, the thing most people don’t know is that that has always left her exceedingly drained at the end of the day. Naturally she loves more than to just curl up with a heady piece of a literature and torment her husband with obscure facts that he should know but can’t keep in that thick skull of his. Her most treasured personality trait is her wit and cleverness.
Biography:
Leilani grew up in a wizarding village in the valleys of Hawaii’s Big Island. It was one of the larger communities and a frequent meeting space for the surrounding villages. One of the main principles she learned and fell in love with was the value of stories and remembrance. To be remembered and to have stories told about you, for the young Leilani, was the epitome of a life well lived. She swore she would be someone whom her village would tell stories of for generations.
When it came time for schooling, her family had thought to send her to the mainland. A good American education. However, there were several families who sent their children to Tenūsa. She begged her parents fiercely to go there instead of America. It took quite the convincing. It was at a time when there was a lot of propaganda toward being American. However, as she always did, her persistence paid off. It happened that she had family connections in Indonesia and so long as she behaved herself, she could stay with them to qualify for schooling in Tenūsa.
School Life
For a lover of stories, there was no greater place in the world. Leilani was a sponge. Any fact about any book, she could name it. Over her years she became a compulsive collector. Many times classmates and staff asked her if she actually read any of them, and she would turn around and dare them to ask her a fact about them. She had any answer at the ready — whether or not it was the truth. The truth? She’d skim most of it and piece together the rest, and come out mostly correct. Highly intelligent but with a nervous energy that felt like she’d explode at any minute. Burning bright at both ends of the candle as it were.
One day, a professor, quite concerned over her general lack of well-being, quietly suggested she take up a sport and maybe reign in all the nervous tapping and paper shuffling in classes. And the sport she chose: broom racing. It proved to be the outlet she needed. Scared of failing a test (which she never did)? Broom racing. A boy she liked might not like her back? Broom racing. Generally just excited to be alive? Broom racing.
Her compulsive need to read everything and race everyone got her in trouble with some of the older students. It was in one such confrontation that one Makaio Kāne came to her rescue. She swore she had it but the way Makaio defused the situation despite looking like he could rip the heads off of everyone in the hall, had her more curious as to why he didn’t just do that. The two became a fast couple and she jokes if it wasn’t for her he’d not spend enough time in the library to pass his classes at all! The joke around the school as they were graduating was that Leilani had the brains and the brawns and Makaio had the good looks (the joke being that he didn’t really have that either but needed to give him something).
Professional Life
Leilani spent the years after Tenūsa as a professional racer. She bounced around teams and had a much of different numbers as she was getting started. During one fateful match with a Chinese team they kept changing “liu liu liu” and for the whole heat she thought they were casting some sort of spell on them. It wasn’t until after that she learned that “6” meant luck and three of them was super lucky. Thus, there after, she took the number “66” as her number. Her star began to rise. Her husband went off to do who knows what in some lost jungle searching for artifacts, and she was climbing the ranks to become one of the most premiere racers in the region.
However, all good things must come to an end, and her winning streak did too. Instead of seeing herself to the bottom, Leilani was offered a coaching position for a Glasgow team and after careful consideration of checking her watch and her record, she jumped at the opportunity to transition to a teaching role. Makaio had hesitancies about moving to the UK, it was the furthest away from the culture he loved, but because he travelled and he was doing work for the ministry anyway, the move felt right.
Life in the UK
Leilani was a natural at coaching. Driven, tactically clever, but no longer at an age to take the death-defying maneuvers that turned a lose into a sure win. She was a mean caster, and her balance on a broom unparalleled. But something about aging meant you wanted to actually live to see the comforts of a nice sofa and book. She spent a solid 5 years with a respectable record as coach but one thing she never shook across all of her ambition was to be someone who told stories. She never forgot that promise that one day people would tell stories about her.
Her husband got a teaching gig at Hogwarts and would come home with a bunch of crazy stories. One of her favorites was his reaching for her broom in her closet to show up a 7th year student, ending in her being chased by an eagle! Oh, to be there! She got a chance to meet that same student in a random broom shop in a random vacation and immediately hit it off. Hogwarts was a place for stories. Something in her soul told her she needed to be there.
Makaio eventually left Hogwarts having only taught there a year. The outdoorsy rough Makaio was never going to be fit for an office job. An office job though was starting to feel like home to Leilani. Especially one with a library that could potentially rival her own. With all those rare books…
It wasn’t long then until the Librarian position opened up at Hogwarts and she jumped at the chance!
First Instance of Magic
Speaking of stories, one that her home village will still tell from time to time is the first time little Leilani showed signs of magic.
Leilani was 5 years old and one of the other boys had stolen her doll as they were listening to the storyteller. She was so angry that her ears turned into the size of elephant ears! She was absolutely mortified and it took longer than she would have liked for them to return to normal. It was long enough that she got stuck with the name elephant ear for the rest of her childhood.
