When Lyra was seven, both of her parents passed away due to dragon pox. With no relatives nearby and not wanting to be separated from Theo, Lyra contacted the Ministry of Magic herself. A half-blood family who was old friends of her parents offered to take in both children temporarily while arrangements were made. They gave Lyra and Theo safety, education and love where their parents could no longer. They also helped Lyra realize that muggles were not as dangerous or scary as she had been raised to believe.
